Android Auto can resume or start media when your phone connects to your car, but Google’s official help does not document a universal autoplay switch or a single cause for every vehicle. Look in Android Auto settings for a media-resume or automatic-start option; its name and availability can vary, and turning it off may not stop every app or playback event.
Why music may start when Android Auto connects
Android Auto lets compatible media apps play music and podcasts through your car’s speakers. Google also documents quick access to the recently used media app from the car display. That explains how a media app can be available, but Google does not say that recently using an app always triggers playback when the car connects.

Some users have reported a setting that resumes or starts media automatically. In an August 2019 Android Auto Community discussion, a user said enabling “Automatically resume media” caused Spotify to start after connecting the phone to the car. In a July 2023 discussion, a user reported that turning off an “automatically start media” control stopped playback, though the podcast screen could still appear. These are community reports, not a current, universal Google instruction.

Android Auto’s media-resume behavior and Bluetooth’s ability to route audio are separate settings and should not be treated as interchangeable.

How to stop Android Auto from starting media
- Open Android Auto settings on your phone. Look for an option called “Automatically resume media,” “automatically start media,” or similar. The labels come from user reports dated 2019–2023; Google’s current help does not confirm that every phone has this control or specify one universal settings path. If you do not see it, search your phone’s Settings for “Android Auto” and “media.”
- Turn off the relevant option if it is present. Reconnect to the car and see whether playback still starts. A May 2020 Community exchange shows why this is not a guaranteed fix: the person asking for help said disabling “Automatically resume media” had not solved their problem.
- Note which app starts and whether it was the last one used. Android Auto makes a recently used media app accessible, but that alone does not prove it initiated playback. If the same supported app repeatedly starts, consult the app developer’s support resources; Google directs users to the developer for app-specific troubleshooting.
- Check whether the event is Android Auto or Bluetooth-only audio. If the phone is connected to the car without Android Auto and audio is playing over Bluetooth, inspect the car’s Bluetooth device settings for “Media audio.” Google’s Bluetooth troubleshooting also advises checking volume and other paired devices. This setting controls Bluetooth audio routing; it is not Android Auto’s media-resume control.
- Check vehicle-specific instructions. If the behavior or available settings differ by car, consult the owner’s manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer. Google’s setup guidance says to confirm vehicle compatibility and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
What the settings can—and cannot—tell you
Google’s official Android Auto help explains how to play media and access compatible apps, but it does not provide a confirmed, universal autoplay-off setting. The named resume and automatic-start controls are described in Google-hosted community discussions, whose content may not be verified or current. Treat them as options to look for, not as guaranteed features.
Likewise, “Media audio” in a car’s Bluetooth settings concerns whether Bluetooth audio can play through the car. Google notes that not all cars can play music by Bluetooth. That troubleshooting advice applies to Bluetooth playback problems; it does not establish Bluetooth as the cause when Android Auto starts media.
