Both use layered protections, but the meaningful comparison is between specific phone models: their remaining update support, documented hardware protections, software features, and your security settings.
Why the exact phone matters more than the brand
Security features and update commitments differ across generations, models, regions, and, in some cases, carriers. A family-wide label cannot tell you whether a particular phone still receives security patches or whether it includes a specific security component.

- Remaining support: how long security updates are promised, and when the support period began.
- Update delivery: whether the device is still eligible and whether carrier or regional factors affect timing.
- Hardware protections: which secure processor, trusted execution components, and protected storage are documented for that model.
- Settings and accounts: which protections are enabled and whether the phone is prepared for loss or theft.
- Evidence: whether a claim is a manufacturer description or the result of independent comparative testing.
How Samsung describes Galaxy security
Samsung describes Knox as a multi-layer security platform embedded in Galaxy devices. Its overview covers hardware-rooted trust, a dedicated environment for security-sensitive operations, isolated storage for sensitive information, secure boot and software-integrity checks, tamper detection, and security update delivery. Samsung describes Knox Vault as isolated security storage on supported devices; availability depends on the model. Knox Matrix and related capabilities also vary by model, One UI version, account, and region. Samsung’s Knox security overview describes these capabilities, but it is a vendor account rather than a head-to-head measurement of resistance to attacks.

Samsung update commitments
Samsung’s 2022 announcement promised up to five years of security updates and four generations of Android OS upgrades for select eligible Galaxy models. The announcement applies to an eligible cohort, not every Galaxy phone, and its four-generation OS-upgrade commitment is distinct from its security-update period. Check Samsung’s current support information for the exact phone rather than applying the announcement across the product range. Samsung’s 2022 announcement
How Google describes Pixel security
Google’s Pixel specifications list security components and features by device. They include Titan M2 on specified generations, a trusted execution environment, and software protections; cited product specifications also describe anti-malware and phishing protection and passkey support. These details should not be assumed to apply to every Pixel. Use Google’s Pixel hardware specifications to check the named model.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Pixel update periods
Google’s published policy gives Pixel 8 and later seven years of updates from the date each device first became available on the Google Store in the United States. The policy covers OS and security updates and may include Pixel Drops. Specified Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generation models have five-year periods measured from their respective first US Google Store availability. These are model-cohort commitments, not a seven-year promise for every Pixel or a start date based on worldwide retail availability. Google’s Pixel update policy

Compare update support without mixing unlike promises
| Device group or commitment | Published period | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel 8 and later | Seven years of updates | Google counts from each phone’s first availability on the US Google Store; the policy covers OS and security updates and may include Pixel Drops. Google |
| Specified Pixel 6/7 generation models | Five years of updates | Google counts from each model’s first availability on the US Google Store. Confirm the exact model in the policy. Google |
| Select eligible Galaxy models in Samsung’s 2022 announcement | Up to five years of security updates; four generations of Android OS upgrades | This was an eligibility-limited announcement. It does not establish the current promise for every Galaxy model. Samsung |
The figures are not directly interchangeable: Google’s cited policy covers OS and security updates for specified Pixel cohorts, while Samsung’s 2022 wording distinguishes security updates from generations of OS upgrades. The Samsung announcement is also dated and limited to select devices. For any phone you own or plan to buy, establish its official support period and start date, then assess how much of that period remains.

Settings that help protect either phone
Hardware and update commitments do not replace secure configuration. Google’s Pixel guidance points users to Play Protect, Find My Device, security-update status, screen lock, biometric unlock, Google Account security checkup, and Google Play system updates. The names and available options can depend on software version and device. Google’s Pixel security and privacy settings guide
Prepare for loss or theft
Google documents built-in Android theft protections and emphasizes preparing the account and enabling location and device-finding settings before a phone goes missing. Exact behavior depends on the device and its configuration. Review Google’s theft-protection guidance, and verify that the relevant controls are active while you still have the device.

Check an existing phone’s patch status
On a Pixel, open the security settings and check the displayed security update and Google Play system update status; Google’s settings guide explains where to manage them. For a Galaxy, use the phone’s software-update settings and Samsung’s support information for its exact model. A current displayed patch level is more useful than a brand-level claim, but it does not by itself tell you how long future support will continue.

Samsung’s Knox overview and Google’s Pixel specifications describe their own security designs. Their update policies establish stated commitments for eligible devices. These sources do not provide a controlled comparison of real-world compromise rates, malware infections, or resistance to a common set of attacks. They therefore do not establish an overall security winner.
