There is no single best router brand for every home. Choose by the exact model and your layout: first decide whether one access point can cover the spaces where you use Wi-Fi or whether a mesh system with multiple nodes makes more sense. Then compare the model’s bands, wired ports, mesh features, management requirements, included services, and total cost. The available product information does not establish a fair performance ranking across TP-Link, ASUS, NETGEAR, and eero.

Start with coverage: one router or a mesh system?

A router’s brand name alone will not tell you whether one device can reach every room you need. Floor plan, walls, placement, and the specific model all matter. Treat manufacturers’ coverage estimates as claims, not guarantees for your home.

When one access point may be enough

A standalone router can suit an apartment or a smaller, open home where a central device can serve the areas that need Wi-Fi. NETGEAR positions its Nighthawk routers as standalone access points for apartments and smaller homes; that is the company’s product positioning, not an independent finding about which brand performs best. NETGEAR’s router and mesh overview explains its distinction between Nighthawk routers and Orbi mesh systems.

When to consider mesh

A mesh system uses multiple nodes to extend a network across a larger or more divided home. It may be a better fit when one router cannot provide useful coverage in all the areas you need, but node placement and the connection between nodes still matter. Compare the exact pack configuration and whether wired backhaul—an Ethernet link between nodes—is supported and practical in your home.

For an example of how widely manufacturer estimates can vary by product, eero lists up to 2,000 square feet of coverage per eero 7 unit, while NETGEAR advertises up to 10,000 square feet for the Orbi 970 system. These are each manufacturer’s claims for different products and configurations, not directly comparable promises of coverage in a particular home. eero’s eero 7 specifications and NETGEAR’s Orbi 970 page provide the respective details.

Compare the exact wireless capabilities your devices can use

Wireless bands and Wi-Fi generation are model-level differences, not reliable brand-wide shorthand. NETGEAR describes 2.4 GHz as offering longer range and broader compatibility, 5 GHz as faster at closer distances, and 6 GHz as a newer band supported by Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 devices. Check the specifications of your phones, computers, TVs, and smart-home devices before paying for capabilities they cannot use.

The examples in the available product information differ in band configuration: eero 7 is dual-band, while the Orbi 970 is quad-band. More bands do not, by themselves, establish better performance in every home. TP-Link’s UK Deco BE9300 page describes a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 mesh system. Those labels are useful for narrowing choices, but they do not substitute for a matched, independent performance comparison.

Check wired ports and mesh backhaul against your setup

Count the Ethernet connections you need and compare their speeds with your modem, internet plan, and wired devices. A fast Wi-Fi specification cannot make a slower port or internet connection faster.

NETGEAR Orbi 970 Series NETGEAR advertises 10G ports Dedicated backhaul

These specifications come from the manufacturers’ pages for different models, not from a brand-wide comparison. The TP-Link details are from its UK product page, so check regional specifications and service tiers for the version sold where you live. TP-Link’s Deco BE9300 page, eero’s eero 7 support page, and NETGEAR’s Orbi 970 page list the respective product details.

Why backhaul matters in a mesh

Backhaul is the link carrying traffic between mesh nodes. If you can connect nodes with Ethernet, check that the system supports wired backhaul and whether the available ports are sufficient for that layout. If nodes will communicate wirelessly, compare the system’s stated backhaul design rather than assuming that a larger headline speed means better node-to-node performance in your home.

Read speed and coverage figures as product claims, not guarantees

Headline figures are not a reliable way to rank these brands. TP-Link lists up to 9,335 Mbps as aggregate Wi-Fi speed for the UK Deco BE9300; NETGEAR advertises up to 27 Gbps for Orbi 970. The numbers describe different manufacturers’ products and specifications, not the internet speed a household should expect. NETGEAR also advertises up to 200 connected devices for Orbi 970, while eero lists support for 120+ devices for eero 7. Those capacity figures are likewise manufacturer claims, not evidence that either system will deliver a particular experience with a given mix of devices and network traffic.

Factor in setup, management, security, and parental controls

Management requirements can affect everyday use as much as a specification. eero says setup and network management for eero 7 require the eero app. It also says eero 7 is compatible with eero Plus. TP-Link lists HomeShield protection and parental controls for Deco BE9300, and NETGEAR markets Armor on Orbi 970. These product pages do not establish a complete, current comparison of which functions are free, paid, or included in each service tier across all four brands.

Before choosing, check the exact model’s service terms for your market. In particular, confirm which security and parental-control functions are included, which require a subscription, and what remains available if you do not subscribe. Do not infer the cost or availability of a feature from a family name alone.

What the examples say—and what they do not prove

TP-Link Deco BE9300

TP-Link’s UK page describes the Deco BE9300 as a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 whole-home mesh system and lists four 2.5 Gbps ports, wired and wireless backhaul, MLO, and HomeShield features. Its page includes a tested-speed heatmap under specified conditions; this is TP-Link’s demonstration, not an independent comparison with the other brands. Check the page for the UK-market product details and confirm local specifications before buying.

eero 7

eero describes its eero 7 as a dual-band Wi-Fi 7 router with two auto-sensing 2.5 GbE ports. It can be used as a primary router or as an extender for an existing eero network, and it requires the eero app for setup and management. eero lists up to 2,000 square feet of coverage per unit, support for 120+ devices, and a limited three-year warranty. The coverage and device figures are manufacturer claims; check the applicable regional warranty terms.

NETGEAR Orbi 970 Series

NETGEAR describes Orbi 970 as a quad-band Wi-Fi 7 mesh system with a dedicated backhaul. It advertises up to 27 Gbps, coverage up to 10,000 square feet, and support for up to 200 connected devices. These are NETGEAR’s claims for the product, not independently established comparative results.

ASUS

The available ASUS source is a listing of its router families, not enough detail to identify a specific ASUS model that can be fairly compared with these examples on price, ports, bands, or included services. ASUS’s router-family listing can help locate models, but make a decision from the specifications and service terms for the particular model and regional version you are considering.

How to choose for your home

  1. Map the areas that need Wi-Fi. Note the rooms and floors where you use devices, and whether walls or distance make a single central access point impractical.
  2. Choose the system type. Compare standalone routers if one access point seems appropriate; consider mesh if you need multiple nodes. Check the exact pack contents rather than assuming a product name specifies how many units are included.
  3. Inventory devices and wired connections. Check which Wi-Fi bands and generations your devices support, then count the Ethernet ports and speeds needed for your modem and wired equipment.
  4. Check backhaul and placement options. For mesh, confirm wired-backhaul support if you can run Ethernet, or examine the manufacturer’s stated wireless-backhaul design.
  5. Review daily management and service terms. Confirm setup requirements, app or account dependencies, included controls, subscription conditions, and regional warranty terms for the exact model.
  6. Compare total price for equivalent configurations. Include the full number of nodes you need and any recurring service costs you choose to add. Recheck the current regional price and pack before purchase; the specifications cited here do not establish current prices.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
