A blank area below the fold usually means either the capture covers only the browser viewport, or the page has not loaded content that appears farther down. Confirm the capture scope first. If it is already a full-page screenshot, scrolling through the page and waiting for deferred content to render can reveal whether lazy loading or page-specific behavior is responsible.
What “below the fold” means in a screenshot
The fold is the lower edge of the visible browser window. A viewport screenshot captures only what is visible there; content farther down the document is outside the image by design. A full-page screenshot is different: it is intended to capture the scrollable page. Playwright’s documentation distinguishes viewport, element, and full-page captures, with fullPage: true selecting the full page: Playwright screenshot documentation.

Even a full-page capture does not guarantee that every image or component has loaded. A blank section can therefore mean the capture scope is too limited, or that the page rendered an empty area before deferred content was ready.
Why a full-page screenshot can still have blank space
Lazy-loaded images or components
Pages often defer fetching or rendering content until it is needed, such as when it approaches the visible area. This is called lazy loading; browsers and sites can implement it in different ways. See MDN’s overview of lazy loading.

Some full-page capture methods measure the document and capture it without producing the same sequence of scroll events as a person reading the page. If a site waits for scrolling or an intersection observer before loading an image or component, the screenshot may preserve its empty placeholder. The capture can be technically full-page while still missing content that never loaded.
Scroll-triggered scripts, delays, and page-specific behavior
JavaScript may reveal content, start an animation, or request an image only after scrolling. A delayed script, embedded content, or a page-specific rendering failure can also leave a gap. Infinite-scroll pages need special care: more content may be added only as the visitor reaches the bottom, so a single full-page capture may not include sections that have not yet been requested. These are possibilities to investigate, not proof of the cause on a particular site. Diagnose the blank area before changing your workflow
- Check capture scope. Confirm that the tool is set to capture the full scrollable page, not just the viewport or a selected element. In Playwright, use
fullPage: truefor a full-page screenshot. - Compare with the live page. Open the same URL in a regular browser and scroll to the blank area. If it is blank there too, investigate the site’s rendering, content, or network behavior rather than assuming the capture tool caused it.
- Scroll in steps and wait. In an automated browser workflow, scroll down through the page and pause to allow images, observers, or scripts to run. Return to the intended capture position before taking the screenshot. This is a diagnostic technique, not a guarantee for every site.
- Wait for a meaningful readiness condition. When possible, wait for a known image or section to appear or finish loading instead of relying only on a fixed delay. A delay can help with a slow page, but cannot prove that all deferred content is ready.
- Inspect what remains blank. Note whether the gap contains images, an embed, an animated section, or dynamically inserted content. If only one page is affected, check that page’s browser console and network activity before changing capture settings for all pages.

The short pause is only an illustrative starting point, not a universal timing requirement; adjust it based on the page’s behavior. If the content is not expected to appear, the selector wait will time out, which is a useful signal to inspect the page rather than silently accepting a blank capture.

Common problems and what to check
- The bottom of the page is missing entirely: check whether the tool captured only the viewport or a selected element instead of the full page.
- The page is full-length, but image areas are empty: scroll the live page and see whether those images load only when they approach the viewport. If so, trigger scrolling and wait before capture, or use a capture option that loads lazy images.
- A section appears after a delay: wait for the relevant element or another page-specific readiness condition. A longer arbitrary delay may still be unreliable.
- Only one site or URL fails: compare the live page, inspect its console and network activity, and check for scripts, embeds, or bot checks that could affect rendering. Avoid treating one page’s behavior as a global screenshot setting problem.
- An infinite-scroll page stops early: the page may request more items only as you reach its current end. Scroll repeatedly and verify that additional content has actually been inserted before taking the final capture.

Can I fix every blank area by increasing the timeout?
No. A delay helps only if the missing content is still loading. If the page requires scrolling or a script fails, waiting longer by itself may not help.
