Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote discussed potential investments in Egypt on October 3, 2026, in New Alamein. The reported areas were energy, fertilizers, chemicals and cement. Egypt’s presidency said no agreement was signed; no project value or timetable was announced. The talks are not a confirmed Egyptian investment project. Ahram Online reported the meeting during the Alamein Africa business forum.

What is Dangote Group?

Dangote Group is a Nigerian industrial conglomerate whose principal holding company, Dangote Industries Limited, is headquartered in Lagos. The group dates its founding to 1981. Aliko Dangote is its founder and president/chief executive.

The group’s businesses span cement, petroleum refining, petrochemicals, fertilizers, sugar, salt and seasonings, agriculture, packaging and logistics. Dangote entered rice, sugar and cement trading in 1978, but that trading activity predates the group’s stated founding.

Dangote Cement, Dangote Sugar Refinery and NASCON Allied Industries are among its listed businesses; NASCON produces salt and seasonings.

What did Dangote and Egypt discuss?

The October 3, 2026 meeting in New Alamein covered potential opportunities in energy, fertilizers, chemicals and cement. It took place during the Alamein Africa business forum, described by Ahram Online as a biennial African business platform.

  • Agreement status: The presidency said no agreement was signed.
  • Investment value: None was announced.
  • Project timetable: None was announced.

These details establish that the parties discussed possible investment; they do not establish that Dangote has committed to build or finance a project in Egypt.

What are Dangote Group’s major industrial operations?

Cement

Dangote Cement’s website lists 55 million tonnes of annual installed production capacity across 10 countries, as reported by Ahram Online in 2026. Installed capacity is the amount facilities can produce under their stated capacity; it is not a figure for actual annual production.

Refining and petrochemicals

The Lekki refinery complex near Lagos began processing crude in 2024. Its stated refining capacity is 700,000 barrels per day, and expansion to 1.4 million barrels per day is planned. The complex’s advertised polypropylene capacity is 830,000 tonnes annually. Ahram Online attributes these figures to the refinery website; they describe stated capacity, not independently verified output.

The facility’s listed products include petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and liquefied petroleum gas. In September 2026, a $1.6 billion share offering for the refinery was launched to help finance expansion. The report gave October 13, 2026, as its scheduled closing date; that date is a deadline, not confirmation that the offering closed.

Fertilizers

The group’s Nigerian fertilizer complex has a first-phase annual urea capacity of 3 million tonnes and a reported construction cost of $2.5 billion. Dangote has outlined expansion plans targeting 12 million tonnes of annual capacity and reportedly hoped to list the fertilizer business in 2027. These are forward-looking plans, not completed milestones.

Which other African investments have been announced?

Kenya: planned Lamu refinery

Dangote broke ground on a planned refinery in Lamu on September 30, 2026. The project is described as a $16 billion investment, with target capacity of 700,000 barrels per day and completion targeted for 2030. Those are project cost and capacity estimates and a target date, not evidence that the refinery is operating. The same Ahram Online report notes land-rights litigation and environmental objections.

Ethiopia and Djibouti

Dangote Group said in May 2026 that its declared and signed investments in Ethiopia exceeded $4 billion. Separately, in September 2026 it announced a petroleum pipeline and storage venture involving Ethiopia and Djibouti, valued at $660 million. The reported figures describe declared investments and an announced venture; they should not be read as proof that all projects are complete or operational.

How should the group’s scale and ambitions be understood?

Aliko Dangote’s estimated personal fortune was $28.5 billion on Forbes’ 2026 list, based on prices and exchange rates on March 1, 2026, according to Ahram Online. That estimate concerns Dangote’s personal wealth, not the group’s revenue or assets.

The group has an ambition of reaching $100 billion in annual revenue by 2030, with support from Afreximbank reported by Ahram Online. This is a future target, not current turnover.

Across the group’s announcements, it is important to distinguish operating facilities from proposed projects, installed or target capacity from actual production, and planned project costs from completed investment. The Egypt discussion remains at the exploratory stage on the information reported October 3, 2026.
