A website screenshot can look blurry because the page’s images are being enlarged beyond the resolution they were designed for, because the browser is scaling the page to fit a mobile viewport, or because the saved image was changed after capture. First compare the live page, the original screenshot saved on your phone, and any copy you shared. That shows where to investigate; the symptom alone cannot identify a single cause.
First find out where the blur starts
Compare three versions of the same content: the live page in your browser, the original screenshot opened from your phone’s Screenshots folder, and the copy received after sharing. View them at roughly the same size. Note whether the blur affects all text and images or only particular photographs, logos, or banners.
- The live page is blurry too: Look for image-resolution or mobile-layout issues on the page.
- The live page is sharp but the saved screenshot is not: Check the screenshot’s dimensions and whether it was edited or cropped.
- The saved original is sharp but the shared copy is blurry: Compare the two files. Resizing or other changes during sharing are possibilities to investigate, not a confirmed cause for any particular service.
Record your phone model, Android and browser versions, screenshot dimensions, and which elements look soft. Without those details, it is not possible to diagnose the specific phone or page.

Why a website can look soft on a high-density screen
An image may be too small for the display
Phones use physical pixels and logical screen units that do not necessarily map one-to-one. Android Developers explains that a graphic designed for one density can be scaled on a higher-density screen; its example describes a 300-pixel-wide image on a 320-dpi screen. Scaling a small asset up can make it look blurred or pixelated. The example illustrates the mechanism, not how often it occurs. Android Developers’ guide to supporting different screens in web apps was updated on 2024-02-22.
If only one logo, banner, or photograph looks soft while surrounding text and controls remain crisp, the page’s source image is a useful place to look. A screenshot captures what the browser rendered; it cannot restore detail that was absent from the displayed image.
Viewport scaling can change how the page is rendered
A phone’s web viewport is not simply its physical screen width. Android’s guidance notes that mobile browsers, including Chrome, commonly use a wide viewport around 980 pixels and may zoom out to fit it. Mobile pages typically declare width=device-width and use flexible layouts so content fits the device. If the page is not adapted for mobile, browser scaling may make the overall layout appear smaller or harder to inspect. Android Developers describes this behavior and the mobile viewport approach.

Device pixel ratio matters to site owners
Device pixel ratio relates logical pixels to physical display pixels. A low-resolution image can look pixelated when shown on a higher-density display. Chrome DevTools documents density-aware options including srcset, CSS image-set(), and resolution-aware styles. For a page maintainer, check that image sources provide enough resolution for the devices and sizes at which they are displayed. Chrome DevTools’ Device mode documentation explains device emulation and density considerations; its publication date is not established here.
Chrome for Developers also demonstrates serving larger background-image assets at higher device pixel ratios in its Pixel-perfect WebView guide. These are checks for whoever controls the site; they do not prove that a particular blurry screenshot has this cause.

Check the saved screenshot itself
Google’s Android Help describes taking a screenshot with the phone’s controls and finding it in Photos under Collections → On this device → Screenshots. Menu labels can vary with the Photos app version. The help page also says scrolling screenshots are available on Android 12 and later on most screens that allow scrolling. These instructions explain how to capture and find an image; they do not establish that every Android device saves screenshots identically or that capture is responsible for blur. Google’s screenshot and screen-recording guide was accessed on 2026-10-03.
- Open the original screenshot locally, rather than judging only a preview in a messaging or social app.
- Check its pixel dimensions in the image details, if available. A crop or edit may have reduced the dimensions.
- Compare it with the live page at a similar displayed size. Enlarging a small screenshot well beyond its native size can make it look soft even if the saved file is unchanged.
- If you edited or cropped the image, compare that version with the untouched original.
A screenshot’s appearance while zoomed in is not the same as its sharpness at its native dimensions. Avoid concluding that the phone’s screen is damaged from a soft website image alone.

What to do if you maintain the website
- Verify that the page declares an appropriate mobile viewport, commonly
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">, and that the layout adapts to narrower screens. - Check the actual image assets used for mobile and high-density displays. Provide suitable resolutions using responsive image mechanisms such as
srcsetor density-aware CSS where appropriate. - Compare the page in a real mobile browser with a device emulation view. Emulation helps inspect viewport behavior but does not by itself establish how every handset renders the page.
- Check whether the blur is isolated to an image or affects the whole page before changing capture settings. A screenshot tool cannot add source detail missing from a low-resolution asset.
Or skip the browser setup
For a website screenshot made from a URL, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF with one GET request. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include verdict and billing headers. ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents.
Example cURL request (replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and setup. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. A URL-based capture can help when you need an image of a page, but it does not diagnose or repair the Android phone’s display or improve the source image’s resolution.
