Copy the server URL and stream key for your sermon event from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then use them as FFmpeg’s publishing destination. The URL tells FFmpeg where to connect; the key authorizes the feed. Use the current values shown for your stream, protect the key like a password, and test the feed in YouTube’s preview before the service.
Before you configure FFmpeg
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. You must be at least 16 to stream on YouTube. Check current eligibility in YouTube Help’s live-streaming requirements.
- Install an FFmpeg build that includes the encoders and network protocol support you plan to use. Available codecs and RTMPS/TLS support can vary by build.
- Prepare a stable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity for the encoded video and audio, plus headroom for fluctuations.
Find the YouTube server URL and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open the Live Control Room. Create a stream for the service or select its scheduled event.
- Open the stream’s Stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS; if the Live Control Room supplies an RTMPS URL, use that exact URL rather than assuming an RTMP address is interchangeable.
- Keep the URL and key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not include the key in a public command transcript, screenshot, shared document, or repository. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in your FFmpeg configuration.
The event’s URL and key are the authoritative values. YouTube may let you reuse a custom stream key, but use the key associated with the stream setup you intend to send to.

Put the key in FFmpeg’s output destination
FFmpeg publishes to an output URL. Its documented RTMP pattern is rtmp://myserver/live/mystream; the server, application path, and stream key together form the destination. Use the actual server URL and key from YouTube’s Live Control Room to construct the corresponding output destination.

Replace INPUT with the source, and replace the destination components with the values and path format supplied for your stream. The command is an illustration of where the values go, not a tested invocation or a universal encoding preset. For RTMPS, use the RTMPS server URL YouTube provides and a build with suitable TLS support.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Because the key is embedded in the destination, avoid saving a real key in shell history or leaving it in a script that others can read. Use access-controlled configuration appropriate to your operating system and team workflow.
Choose encoding settings for the church feed
Match the encoding to the camera or media source, the quality you need, and the upload capacity available at the church. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio for ordinary SDR RTMP/RTMPS, with constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Use YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the bitrate range matching your codec, resolution, and frame rate; the sample command’s 2500k value is not a recommendation for every stream.

Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
- Resolution and frame rate: Choose what the feed actually provides and what your upload connection can sustain. Higher resolution and frame rate generally require more upload bandwidth.
- Bitrate: Select a value within YouTube’s current range for the chosen codec and output format. Do not copy a number intended for a different resolution or codec.
- Keyframes: Configure a two-second interval where your encoding setup allows it, and do not exceed four seconds, following YouTube’s guidance.
- Audio: Include the service’s sound and check for clipping, silence, or an unintended microphone input before the event.
- Bandwidth headroom: YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload capacity available and accounting for primary and backup streams when both are in use.
Test the stream before the service
- Start FFmpeg early enough to resolve connection or encoding problems before the congregation expects the stream.
- Open the event’s Live Control Room and confirm that the preview appears and stream health is acceptable.
- Test audio and motion similar to the actual service. A static image alone will not reveal every issue that appears with camera movement or a live mix.
- Check the watch page from a separate device or connection, and confirm that the expected event is accessible.
- Monitor the connection and stream health as the service begins. If using a backup stream, include its upload demand in your bandwidth planning.
Common FFmpeg and YouTube setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming feed | The output destination is malformed, the server URL or key does not match the selected event, or FFmpeg cannot connect. | Copy the current URL and key again from that event’s Stream settings; verify the destination path and that FFmpeg is publishing with the expected output format. |
| RTMPS connection or SSL error | The FFmpeg build may lack suitable RTMPS/TLS support, or the connection may need the port YouTube specifies for this case. | Use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. YouTube says to try port 443 if an SSL error occurs with a correct RTMPS URL; if the error persists, check the FFmpeg build’s RTMPS/TLS support. |
| Feed connects but quality or stability is poor | Encoding settings may not suit the source or upload capacity, or available bandwidth may be too close to the stream’s demand. | Use YouTube’s current settings table for the selected codec and resolution, leave its recommended 20% bandwidth headroom, and test with representative motion and audio. |
| YouTube rejects the stream after a key was shared | The key may have been exposed or changed. | Reset the key in Live Control Room, then update the protected FFmpeg configuration with the replacement. |
Copyright, reused content, and ending the event
Having a working encoder connection does not establish that you have permission to broadcast every part of a service. Confirm that the church has the necessary rights or permissions for music, recorded media, readings, and other copyrighted material in the stream. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and policies can apply to the channel and its content; review them before broadcasting.
Recommended Free Tools
When the service is over, stop FFmpeg and end the event in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive outcome for a longer stream.
