LED lights can flicker because of a dimmer and bulb mismatch, a loose bulb, a failing bulb or LED driver, or changes in the electrical supply. Smart bulbs may also blink when they lose a network connection or enter setup mode. Start with safe checks you can make without touching wiring; if several lights flicker or the cause appears to involve wiring or voltage, contact a qualified electrician.
First, identify when the flicker happens
The pattern can help narrow down the likely cause, but it cannot diagnose a particular home remotely.

| What you notice | Possible explanation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Flicker only while dimming, or only near the dimmest setting | The bulb may not be dimmable, or it may be incompatible with the dimmer. | Check the bulb label and the manufacturers’ compatibility guidance for the exact bulb and dimmer models. |
| One light flickers even when not dimmed | The bulb may be loose or failing; a fixture or supply issue is also possible. | With power off, check that an accessible screw-in bulb is seated. If safe and straightforward, try a known-good compatible bulb. |
| Several lights flicker, or flickering changes when other electrical loads switch on | Voltage variation or a wiring or supply problem may be involved. | Arrange professional investigation rather than opening a wall box or hardwired fixture. |
| A smart bulb blinks in a pattern or flashes as a status signal | It may have lost its network connection, need an update, or be in setup or reset mode. | Check the bulb’s app status and follow the product maker’s instructions. |
Fix flicker that happens while dimming
Check the bulb and dimmer pairing
- Confirm the bulb is marked dimmable. A non-dimmable LED is not intended to work with a dimmer.
- Look up both exact model numbers. Use the bulb and dimmer makers’ compatibility information; LED bulbs do not all work with every dimmer or dimming method. See Lutron’s Maestro PRO troubleshooting guide and TP-Link’s compatibility FAQ.
- Use model-specific trim or calibration only when available. Some Lutron dimmers offer low-end trim for flicker near the bottom of the range, and some symptoms may call for high-end trim. Follow the instructions for the specific dimmer, such as Lutron’s Maestro LED+ guide.
If the pairing is incompatible, a compatible dimmable bulb or a compatible dimmer may solve that mismatch. Neither is a universal fix: verify the exact pairing, load and voltage requirements, and the bulb’s physical fit before buying or changing anything. TP-Link’s guidance applies to its listed products only; it specifies leading-edge/TRIAC dimming for certain smart dimmers and says its Kasa and Tapo smart bulbs should be controlled through the app rather than a smart dimmer. It should not be generalized to other brands.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck a bulb that flickers when not dimmed
- Turn power off before checking an accessible screw-in bulb. Make sure it is seated properly; do not handle fixed wiring or assume a fixture is safe to work on. Philips Hue identifies a loose physical connection as one possible cause.
- If practical, try a known-good compatible bulb. This can help distinguish a bulb fault from a fixture or supply issue when only one lamp is affected. LEDVANCE also lists a defective driver as a possible cause (LEDVANCE’s flicker guidance).
- Stop if the replacement also flickers or more lights are affected. Ask the manufacturer or a qualified electrician to investigate; do not open a wall box or hardwired fixture.
When multiple lights flicker or loads affect the symptom
Voltage changes can affect LED drivers and brightness. The NIH Office of Research Facilities lists changing loads, faulty wiring, grid disturbances and switching operations among possible sources of voltage variation in its August 2025 technical bulletin. That bulletin discusses facility systems, not a diagnostic test for homes, so it cannot identify the cause in a particular household. Persistent or widespread flickering warrants a qualified electrician; where appropriate, the electrician or resident may also need to contact the utility.

When a smart bulb blinks
First distinguish a status blink from random brightness changes. For Philips Hue, blinking can indicate a lost connection to the Bridge or Wi-Fi, a firmware update, or setup/reset mode. Check the Bridge or router connection, the bulb’s device and software status in the Hue app, and available updates. Use Hue’s own reset and support instructions if needed. Other smart-lighting platforms may behave differently, so do not apply another brand’s reset procedure.

- Several lights flicker, especially if the symptom changes with electrical loads.
- A replacement bulb does not resolve a problem isolated to one fixture.
- You suspect a problem with a fixture, switch, circuit wiring or supply voltage.
- Flickering persists and you cannot resolve it with safe bulb and compatibility checks.
Limit DIY checks to accessible bulbs and product settings. Leave fixed wiring and investigation of persistent or widespread electrical symptoms to a qualified professional.
