What “limited ad earnings” means
YouTube distinguishes limited ad earnings from no ad earnings. With limited earnings, ads may still run, but some advertisers exclude the stream; with no ad earnings, the stream is not eligible to run ads under the advertiser-friendly guidelines. Neither status guarantees that an ad will appear to every viewer or in every available slot.

A continuous stream can have fewer ads for ordinary delivery reasons without receiving a limited-ads classification. Conversely, a limited status is a policy suitability decision, not proof that YouTube penalized the stream for running continuously. The exact cause for your stream cannot be determined without its Studio notice and content.

- Inappropriate language, violence, adult or shocking content.
- Harmful acts or unreliable content, hateful or derogatory content, drugs, and firearms.
- Controversial issues, sensitive events, and dishonest behavior.
- Some children’s content, incendiary or demeaning content, and tobacco.
These are categories to check, not a diagnosis of your stream. Context matters: YouTube says educational, documentary, scientific, or artistic value can affect suitability. How to investigate and appeal
- Read the exact status in YouTube Studio. Open the stream’s monetization details and read the notice and its Impact summary. Confirm whether it says limited ad earnings, no ad earnings, age restriction, or another issue; these are distinct statuses. YouTube Help: Submit an appeal
- Review the whole stream and its packaging. Check the broadcast, title, thumbnail, description, and tags against the advertiser-friendly rules. Include context and the full presentation in your review. Best practices for creating advertiser-friendly content
- Confirm monetization eligibility. Check that the stream is eligible for watch-page monetization and that the channel has accepted the Watch Page Monetisation Module. Turning on ads does not bypass suitability review. YouTube Help: Choose how you want to monetise – Computer
- Appeal if the decision appears mistaken. Use the appeal option shown for the notice if the content meets the guidelines. YouTube says a policy specialist reviews the content and related metadata. Submit an appeal for videos with “Limited ad earnings” or “No ad earnings”

Live ad settings: what they can and cannot change
YouTube offers automatic, scheduled, and manual live mid-roll options. Automatic breaks are selected around natural breakpoints; scheduled mode lets creators choose an interval; manual mode depends on the creator inserting breaks. These controls affect when ad breaks may occur. They do not guarantee that an ad will serve and are not described as a way to remove a limited-ads classification. Its 2024 comparison covered 207 countries and compared average instream revenue per hour among channels with live automatic mid-roll ads enabled against channels without them.
