The “logs” carried by some Second World War tanks were usually fascines: bundles of timber or brushwood used as field-engineering equipment. A specialist tank could drop one into a trench or anti-tank ditch to create a rough crossing for itself and potentially for vehicles following behind. They were not ordinary extra armour. The best-documented WWII example is the Churchill AVRE, an engineer-support tank adapted to carry equipment for overcoming obstacles.
What was a tank fascine for?
A fascine filled a gap that was too wide or steep for a tank to cross unaided. The vehicle released the bundle into a trench or ditch, where it formed a rough trackway. The tank could then attempt the crossing, and following vehicles might use the same route. The method was practical rather than elegant: the bundle was intended to get vehicles over an obstacle, not to provide a permanent road.

The name refers to the bundle itself. Although it could look like a load of logs strapped to a tank, its role was engineering—not armour or fuel storage.

The clearest documented Second World War example is the Churchill AVRE, a Churchill adapted for Royal Engineers work. The Tank Museum describes AVREs carrying timber fascines to drop into anti-tank ditches. An Imperial War Museums catalogue entry for a film produced on 13 October 1944 records Churchill AVRE fascine carriers with the Assault Squadron Royal Engineers near Overloon; the lead vehicle was towing another fascine in an armoured sledge.

- Slide molded turret and upper hull parts give an unbeatable combination of hassle-free assembly and highly realistic detail levels. Cast metal turret and welded hull surface textures are rendered accurately.
- The rear showcases sharp, detailed molding on engine grilles and exhausts, as well as the numerous accessories depicted by the kit.
- Clear parts are used to recreate light lens and cupola vision block parts, further upping the realism of this kit.
- The single-pin T66 tracks are recreated with minimum fuss and great accuracy, by the included belt-type tracks. Drive sprockets feature fine holes.
- A commander figure in realistic pose is provided for the cupola. The periscope seen on the hatch underside is depicted using separate parts.
That evidence supports a specific claim about specialist Churchill AVREs. It does not mean that every WWII tank carried a bundle, or that all fascines had the same construction. Sources documenting the AVRE role do not provide a general WWII fascine specification or a detailed account of its release mechanism.
How did fascines develop before WWII?
Tank-carried fascines were already in use during the First World War. The Tank Museum’s account by historian David Fletcher connects a large tank-carried fascine with the Battle of Cambrai in 1917, where it helped tanks cross deliberately widened trenches. The museum also describes smaller, hand-carried fascines as an older practice, including their use to make a trackway over the flooded Steenbeek in August 1917.

The Cambrai example shows one way the equipment could work, but its measurements and mechanism should not be treated as specifications for Churchill AVRE fascines.

The Cambrai fascine: a specific WWI example
The Tank Museum reports that the Cambrai fascine comprised 75 ordinary fascines held in a frame. It weighed about 1.5 tons and measured about 4 feet 6 inches in diameter and 10 feet wide. These are approximate measurements for that First World War bundle, not universal dimensions for fascines carried in WWII.

How that WWI system was released
At Cambrai, the tank moved the fascine from its travel position to the front of the cab, approached the trench, and tilted forward over it. A crew lever operated a quick-release mechanism. Flags marked the bundle’s position for following tanks. The Tank Museum notes that other tanks could use the crossing, but the fascine was soon forced out of shape and could not be recovered for reuse.
A commander of a male Mark IV in the 5th (E) Battalion described the uncertainty of the crossing in an account reproduced by The Tank Museum: “First, poised over the deep and wide excavation; then, releasing the fascine – would it drop alright? – we saw it lumber beautifully to the bottom.”

How did fascines differ from other AVRE equipment?
The Churchill AVRE could carry different specialist equipment for different obstacles. The Tank Museum distinguishes a timber fascine for a ditch from equipment intended for soft ground or a gap. These were alternative tools for different jobs; the comparison does not imply that every AVRE carried all of them at once.

| Equipment | Obstacle addressed | How it helped |
|---|---|---|
| Fascine | Trench or anti-tank ditch | Filled the obstacle with a timber bundle to create a rough crossing. |
| Bobbin | Soft mud or sand | Laid a trackway over the soft surface. |
| Small Box Girder bridge | A gap requiring a bridge | Spanned the gap; The Tank Museum gives a 30-foot span. |
Why was the AVRE built around an engineering role?
The AVRE’s purpose was not simply to carry a conspicuous bundle. REME Museum archivist Zoe Tolman explains that the Dieppe raid highlighted the danger engineers faced from machine-gun fire and led to a need for armour to protect both engineers and their stores. The Churchill was suitable for adaptation because features including side doors and its ability to cross obstacles supported the engineering role.
