How NHL Coaches Decide Whether a Player Is a Healthy Scratch

NHL coaches have no published formula for healthy scratches. Learn how recent play, lineup availability, game plans, resets and development can shape the decision.

A healthy scratch is an available player left out of a team’s dressed lineup for a particular game. NHL coaches do not follow a published league-wide formula for choosing one: their explanations point to recent play and consistency, the players available, the lineup they want that night, and sometimes a reset, accountability message, development goal, or opponent matchup. A scratch alone does not prove a player is injured, being punished, or permanently demoted.

What does “healthy scratch” mean in hockey?

It means a player is available but not included in that game’s dressed lineup. It is a coach’s game-by-game lineup decision, not an injury designation or a league-mandated consequence for a particular level of scoring or effort.

The NHL’s Hockey Operations Guidelines cover roster limits and injured-reserve procedures; they do not prescribe a test for whom a coach must scratch. The guidelines state that a club’s medical staff determines whether an injury warrants injured reserve under club standards, and a player placed on IR is ineligible to play for at least seven days. That is distinct from leaving an available player out of one game.

Why might a coach scratch a healthy player?

Recent play, consistency, and team expectations

A coach may want a player to be more consistent, regain form, or meet expectations for the role. That does not mean points alone determine who sits. In March 2024, Philadelphia coach John Tortorella said he wanted more from several players around Sean Couturier’s scratch. Couturier said he understood the stated aim as putting “the best lineup available tonight to get a win.” That was his account of the explanation in that situation, not a universal rule.

A separate Columbus case involving Patrik Laine followed limited early-season production and in-game benchings. Coach Pascal Vincent also said, “We need his skill level.” The episode illustrates that performance discussions can be more complicated than a simple points threshold.

A reset or accountability message

Coaches sometimes describe a scratch as a short-term chance to regroup rather than a permanent loss of status. In December 2023, Washington coach Spencer Carbery called Evgeny Kuznetsov’s scratch “Just a reset, a mental reset for him,” after describing his recent struggle to find his game. In a different case, Chicago coach Luke Richardson said Taylor Hall needed a reset after Hall was scratched in November 2024.

A scratch can also communicate accountability, but the player may not see it coming. Hall said the decision was unexpected and remarked, “I’m not immune to coaching or immune to being held accountable.” Richardson acknowledged that he might have communicated sooner and said he needed to learn how Hall preferred to handle such conversations. He reflected, “Sometimes you give veterans a little more of a grace period and I know he’s been frustrated.” These comments show why a coach’s stated purpose and a player’s experience of the decision may differ.

Who is healthy and available to play

The choice depends on the game-day roster as well as on any one player’s performance. A returning player, available replacement, or need for coverage can change who dresses. In an Ottawa lineup discussion, coach D.J. Smith said the decision could come down to who was healthy and whether the team needed an extra player in case someone was hurt early.

Lineup balance and the opponent

Coaches may choose a combination they believe fits that night’s game. In April 2026, New York Rangers coach Mike Sullivan described sitting young defenseman Drew Fortescue partly as a learning opportunity and cited Dallas’s size, strength, and speed. Sullivan said a player sitting above the action can gain “a different vantage point,” then discuss what to watch with assistant coach David Quinn and review film. This is a specific example involving a young defenseman and a particular opponent, not a standard explanation for veteran scratches.

How to interpret a scratch without guessing

A useful way to understand the decision is to consider three questions. This is a reader’s framework based on reported cases, not an official NHL procedure.

  1. Who is available? Check whether the player is described as healthy, whether teammates are returning, and whether the coach has discussed replacements or roster coverage. Do not treat an injury absence or an injured-reserve placement as a healthy scratch.
  2. What does the coach want from the lineup tonight? Look for an explanation tied to form, consistency, accountability, a reset, team balance, or the opponent. Attribute it to the coach or player who said it; do not present an inference as confirmed fact.
  3. What effect does the coach say they intend? The stated goal might be to improve the team’s chance of winning that game, prompt accountability, let a player reset, or help a young player learn. More than one aim may apply, and a public explanation may not disclose every internal consideration.

There is no established league-wide weighting for these factors or statistic showing how often each one causes a scratch. A coach’s comments explain a particular decision; they do not establish a rule for other teams or players.

What a healthy scratch does—and does not—tell fans

  • It tells you the player was left out of that game’s dressed lineup. It does not, by itself, establish an injury or explain the coach’s reason.
  • It may be a competitive decision, a reset, a development choice, or a response to availability and lineup needs. Not every scratch is punitive.
  • It does not establish a permanent demotion or trade plan. Those conclusions require evidence beyond one game’s lineup.
  • Use the explanation available for that specific case. When the player or coach says a decision was surprising or gives a particular rationale, keep that context attached rather than assuming a hidden motive.
