A fascine was a bundle of timber or brushwood carried by an engineering tank and dropped into a ditch to help tracked vehicles cross. WWII records confirm Churchill fascine carriers, but the clearest step-by-step account of how a crew attached and released one describes a British tank at Cambrai in 1917—not a universal WWII procedure.
What a tank fascine did
A fascine was a large bound bundle of timber or branches used to fill an obstacle such as an anti-tank ditch. The tank carried it to the obstacle, released it into the gap, and then crossed over the resulting surface; following tanks could use the same crossing. It was an obstacle-filling aid, not simply a loose log for improving traction or recovering a stuck vehicle. The D-Day Lepe Heritage Group describes this role for WWII fascines and identifies a Churchill AVRE equipped with one (D-Day Lepe Heritage Group: “Hobart’s Funnies”).

What is documented about WWII use?
An Imperial War Museums catalogue entry for the film Exercise Kruschen identifies a Churchill fascine tank crossing an anti-tank ditch and escarpment. That is evidence of the vehicle and its obstacle-crossing purpose, but the catalogue description does not explain how the fascine was attached or released (Imperial War Museums: “EXERCISE KRUSCHEN [Allocated Title]”).
The detailed chain-and-lever sequence often used to explain fascine handling comes from the Battle of Cambrai in 1917. It is useful for understanding the basic principle, but it should not be presented as the confirmed drill for every WWII Churchill, Sherman, or other carrier. The available WWII records establish fascine use without specifying that every vehicle used Cambrai’s exact fittings.

How the documented Cambrai method worked
Prepare and load the bundle
The Tank Museum’s account of the 1917 Cambrai fascine says a large unit was assembled from 75 normal fascines, tightened with chains, and secured with a railway sleeper. The museum gives its weight as about 1.5 tons, its diameter as about four feet six inches, and its width as ten feet; those figures apply to this Cambrai example, not to fascines generally. Because of their height, the bundles were transported separately by rail rather than carried mounted on tanks during rail movement.
At the fitting point, the tank drove toward the bundle. The crew connected chains from the fascine to the tank’s tracks, then reversed. The chains lifted the bundle over the tank’s nose and onto the cab. Once it was in its carrying position, the crew secured it and removed the temporary chains attached to the tracks. Position and release it at the obstacle
Before reaching a trench, the crew moved the fascine forward from its travelling position. The tank stopped at the ditch and a lever at the rear of the cab operated a quick-release mechanism outside, allowing the bundle to drop into the gap. The timber bundle formed a crossing surface for the carrier and other tanks.

The Tank Museum says tanks worked in groups of three, with designated fascine-drop locations. Markers showed following tanks where the bundles had landed. This detail, too, belongs to the Cambrai account; it should not be treated as a rule for every WWII operation.

What the Cambrai account does—and does not—tell us
The Tank Museum reproduces a period account from the commander of a male Mark IV of 5th (E) Battalion, without naming the speaker. He recalled the uncertainty of releasing a fascine over the Hindenburg Line’s excavation: “First, poised over the deep and wide excavation; then, releasing the fascine – would it drop alright? – we saw it lumber beautifully to the bottom. Could we get over?” The passage describes the 1917 Cambrai experience, not testimony from a WWII Churchill crew.
The same museum account says the Cambrai fascine could be used by other tanks, but was soon forced out of shape and could not be recovered. That makes it a consumable crossing aid in that example, rather than a reusable bridge. The source does not establish that every WWII fascine had the same durability or recovery prospects.
