Is YouTube Down, or Is It Your Connection? How to Check

Find out whether YouTube or your internet connection is causing playback problems with simple checks across websites, networks, devices and browsers.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If YouTube will not load, first check whether other websites work, then try YouTube on a different connection and another device or browser. If the problem follows one network or device, troubleshoot that path; if YouTube fails across multiple connections and devices while other sites work, a YouTube-side problem becomes more likely. None of these checks proves an outage on its own.

Check whether the problem is limited to YouTube

  1. Open a few unrelated websites. If they fail too, start with your internet connection rather than assuming YouTube is down. YouTube lists connection issues among possible reasons for access problems: YouTube Help: Fix problems playing videos.
  2. Try YouTube on another connection. For example, switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or compare mobile data with another Wi-Fi network. YouTube recommends changing connections when videos buffer or fail to load: YouTube Help: Troubleshoot streaming and video issues.
  3. Test another device or browser. Try a phone, computer, or supported TV if one is available. YouTube recommends a different supported device when playback continues to fail: YouTube Help: Fix problems playing videos.

Read the pattern, not just the error message. A failure on one browser, app, device, or network points toward that part of the setup. If YouTube fails across devices and connections while unrelated sites load, a service-side issue is more plausible. These are diagnostic clues, not a definitive outage test.

Use the scope of the failure to choose what to check

What you observe What it suggests Next check
YouTube and unrelated websites both fail on one connection A connection or network problem is more likely than a YouTube-only issue. Check the connection, then compare with another network.
YouTube fails on one network but works on another The first network, its settings, or its access rules may be involved. Check that network’s connection and any restrictions.
YouTube fails on one device or browser but works elsewhere The affected app, browser, or device is a more likely source. Update or restart it, then check its cache and extensions.
One video fails but other YouTube videos play The issue may be limited to that video rather than the service overall. Try another video before diagnosing an outage.
YouTube broadly fails across devices and connections while other sites load A YouTube-side issue is more plausible, though not proven. Look for a dated YouTube or Google communication and retry later.

Troubleshoot buffering or slow playback

Buffering can come from a weak connection, the selected video quality, or competition from other devices on the network. YouTube’s video-error guidance gives these approximate sustained speeds: YouTube Help: Fix problems playing videos.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Video quality Approximate sustained speed listed by YouTube
4K 20 Mbps
1080p HD 5 Mbps
720p HD 2.5 Mbps
480p SD 1.1 Mbps
360p SD 0.7 Mbps

These are YouTube’s guidance figures, not a promise that a connection at that speed will always play without interruption. YouTube separately recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming on TV in its TV troubleshooting guidance; that figure is specific to that guidance and should not be substituted for the quality figures above: YouTube Help: Troubleshoot streaming and video issues.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Run an internet speed test, then compare the result with the quality you are trying to play.
  • Lower the video quality and see whether playback stabilizes.
  • Check whether other people or devices are using the same connection. YouTube notes that multiple devices can reduce the speed available to the playback device.
  • For a TV, try moving it or the router to improve the Wi-Fi connection and reduce interference. YouTube recommends checking router proximity and interference; it does not require a wired connection.

Fix a problem isolated to one app, browser, or device

  1. Restart and update. Close and reopen YouTube; update the app or browser and restart the device.
  2. Clear the relevant cache. Clear the YouTube app cache where the device offers that option, or clear browser cache for a browser-specific failure.
  3. Check extensions. In a browser, temporarily disable extensions, including ad blockers, to see whether playback changes.
  4. Check DNS settings if browser playback errors persist. YouTube includes confirming DNS settings among its browser troubleshooting suggestions: YouTube Help: Fix problems playing videos.
  5. Retest. Try a different video and, if possible, another supported device or browser to see whether the problem remains isolated.

Messages such as “Playback error. Tap to retry,” “Connection to server lost,” or “An error has occurred” describe a playback failure but do not, by themselves, tell you whether YouTube, the connection, or the device caused it.

Check for network restrictions and incident updates

Work, school, or other managed networks

A workplace or school may restrict YouTube. Ask the network administrator whether access is enabled; YouTube also notes that an administrator or internet provider may block access: YouTube Help: Fix problems playing videos.

Possible service-side issue

If the problem is widespread across your own devices and connections, look for a dated YouTube or Google communication and check whether it describes the same product, symptom, and region. A Google employee posted that some viewers in North America were experiencing buffering on YouTube and YouTube TV; a later update marked that incident fixed at 00:33 UTC on October 4, 2026: Google employee incident thread. That resolved, dated report illustrates why location, affected product, and resolution time matter; it does not establish YouTube’s current status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If no matching communication appears, that alone does not rule out an incident. Retry later after completing the comparison checks rather than treating any single status source or error string as conclusive.
