DeFi lending protocols raise stablecoin borrow rates as a pool becomes heavily borrowed because higher rates are meant to discourage new borrowing, encourage repayment, and attract more supply. The key measure is utilization: how much of a reserve’s supplied assets are currently borrowed. When utilization is high, less unborrowed liquidity remains for withdrawals and new loans.
What utilization means in a lending pool
In a pooled lending market, suppliers deposit assets into a reserve and borrowers draw from that pool. Utilization connects those two sides: it measures the portion of supplied assets that is in use as loans. Aave summarizes the link in its Aave 101 documentation: “Interest rates adjust based on how much liquidity is in use (utilization).”

For a stablecoin reserve, a rising utilization rate means a larger share of that reserve has been borrowed. The remaining unborrowed amount is the liquidity available to meet withdrawals or support additional borrowing. Aave’s V3 overview conditions withdrawals on available unborrowed liquidity.

Aave v3 documents a two-slope interest-rate model. Below an optimal utilization point, rates rise along one slope; above that point, they rise more steeply. The sharper segment is commonly described as the utilization “kink.” It makes borrowing more expensive as the reserve approaches high utilization, when there is less liquidity left in the pool.
#1 Best Overall
The purpose is to change incentives: a higher borrowing cost may lead some borrowers to borrow less or repay, while a higher return for suppliers may encourage additional deposits. Aave’s risk framework describes rate design as a way to respond to capital scarcity and notes that rates should align with external yield opportunities to limit arbitrage that could drain pool liquidity.
These are intended incentives, not guaranteed outcomes. A higher rate does not ensure that borrowers repay or that new suppliers arrive quickly enough to restore liquidity.

What this means for withdrawals and borrowing
Liquidity is specific to each reserve. A pool can have substantial deposits overall while a particular stablecoin reserve has little unborrowed liquidity available. If a reserve is highly utilized, withdrawals may be limited by the amount that remains unborrowed, and a new loan may be unavailable or constrained. The rate mechanism does not promise that funds will appear or that every withdrawal can be completed immediately.
A high utilization reading alone does not establish that a market is insolvent. It indicates that much of the reserve’s supplied liquidity is borrowed; the cited rate model is designed to manage that liquidity condition through changing incentives.

Why there is no universal utilization kink or stablecoin rate
The two-slope model is an Aave v3 example, not a universal formula for DeFi lenders. Aave’s documentation describes an optimal utilization point but does not establish one threshold for every asset or market. Reserve parameters can also be adjusted through governance, and reserves may have borrowing caps. Aave documents these reserve-level mechanics in its V3 overview, LiquidityPool, and Reserve materials.
Rates can also respond to market conditions and governance changes, so “stablecoin” does not mean the borrowing rate is fixed. Do not treat a rate or threshold observed for one asset, chain, reserve, or date as applicable to another. The same Aave material does not establish that other protocols, such as Compound or Spark, use matching curves or parameters.

What to check before acting
Before borrowing, repaying, or attempting a withdrawal, check the specific market rather than relying on a general rate example:

- The protocol and version, chain, and exact stablecoin reserve.
- Current utilization and available unborrowed liquidity for that reserve.
- The displayed borrow rate and rate mode, such as variable rate where offered.
- The reserve’s applicable caps and other market constraints.
- Whether governance has changed the reserve parameters.
These checks help distinguish a rate change caused by reserve utilization from other borrowing conditions. Collateral liquidation is a separate mechanism: it concerns collateral and repayment risk, not why the utilization-based rate curve becomes steeper.
