Nintendo Switch 2 vs. the Original Switch: What’s Different, and Should You Upgrade?

Switch 2 brings a larger 1080p screen, 4K TV output and more storage, but game compatibility, microSD support and transfer details matter before upgrading.

Switch 2 is a substantial upgrade in screen, TV output and storage, and it plays compatible original Switch games—but not every game or accessory carries over. It makes the most sense if you want Switch 2 games or the newer display and output. If your current Switch still meets your needs, check your game library, storage needs and current prices before deciding.

What changes between Switch 2 and the original Switch?

The biggest differences are the display, TV output and built-in storage. Nintendo lists Switch 2 with a 7.9-inch, 1920×1080 LCD screen, HDR10 support and variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120Hz. In TV mode, it can output up to 3840×2160 at 60fps, or up to 120fps at selected lower resolutions. These are supported specifications, not a guarantee that every game uses the highest resolution or frame rate. Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications provide the complete details.

Switch 2 has 256GB of UFS internal storage and supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB. Nintendo estimates battery life at 2–6.5 hours, depending on the game. That estimate is for Switch 2; it should not be treated as a controlled comparison with every original Switch model.

Will your original Switch games work on Switch 2?

Many physical and digital Nintendo Switch games are compatible, but compatibility is not universal. Nintendo warns that some games may not be supported or may not work fully because Switch 2 has different hardware. Some titles also have Switch 2 updates: certain updates are free, while some upgrades cost extra. Check the specific games you own using Nintendo’s compatibility guidance and title checker before relying on a game to carry over.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Your purchased digital games and physical cartridges should be assessed title by title; owning a Switch version does not automatically mean that a paid Switch 2 upgrade is included. Check the game’s listing and upgrade details for the edition you own.

Can you use your old microSD card?

Not for Switch 2 game data. Switch 2 uses microSD Express for expanded game storage, with support for cards up to 2TB. A conventional microSD card from the original Switch can be used to copy screenshots and videos, according to Nintendo, but it is not compatible with Switch 2 for storing or playing game data. See Nintendo’s storage specifications and Nintendo’s compatibility support page.

Can you transfer save data and other content?

Nintendo provides a system-transfer option during Switch 2 setup, using either a local transfer or a server upload. What moves, and what happens to the source console’s data, depends on the transfer method; some data cannot be transferred, and Nintendo warns that source-console data is deleted after transfer. Read Nintendo’s transfer overview and step-by-step system-transfer instructions before starting, especially if you plan to keep using the old console or have data that cannot be moved.

How much should you budget?

Nintendo of America announced U.S. launch prices in April 2025: $449.99 for Switch 2 and $499.99 for a Switch 2 and Mario Kart World bundle. The same announcement listed a 256GB Samsung microSD Express card at $59.99 and a Switch 2 carrying case and screen protector at $39.99. These are historical launch prices, not verified current October 2026 prices; check retailers for today’s pricing and availability. The card is only relevant if you need more game storage, and a case is optional. Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 pricing announcement records those U.S. launch figures.

Should you upgrade?

  • Upgrade if you want Switch 2 games, a larger and higher-resolution handheld screen, or the newer TV output—and your important games are confirmed compatible.
  • Wait if your original Switch still suits how you play, the newer display and output are not priorities, or the current cost does not feel worthwhile. Check the compatibility of your own library before making the decision.

Before moving systems, verify your key games, account and data-transfer needs, microSD storage plan, and current console price. That gives you a clearer picture of the actual upgrade cost and what will carry over.
