Mixed-reality headsets combine hand tracking, device tracking and environmental sensing so apps can respond to gestures and place digital objects in a physical space. Apple’s visionOS documentation provides a clear example: ARKit exposes distinct providers for hand tracking, world tracking, plane detection and scene reconstruction. Those are separate capabilities, not one all-knowing room scan—and other headsets may work differently.
How a headset tracks your hands
On visionOS, ARKit hand tracking provides live information about the positions of a person’s hands and hand joints. Apps can use hand anchors and joint transforms to update a visual hand representation or support interactions. Apple’s sample describes a hand skeleton with 27 joints, arranged from the wrist toward the fingertips; that figure describes the documented sample, not a universal specification for mixed-reality headsets. Apple’s hand-tracking documentation and its hand-pose animation sample explain these data and examples.

Joint positions and rotations describe where parts of a hand are, not what a person intends. An app must interpret the tracking data to decide whether a hand pose or movement should trigger an action.

“Mapping” can refer to several different outputs. Apple documents plane detection, world tracking and scene reconstruction as distinct ARKit capabilities. Each answers a different question: where are recognizable surfaces, where is the headset relative to the environment, and what geometry can be represented as a mesh?

| Capability | What it provides in Apple’s visionOS documentation | Why an app might use it |
|---|---|---|
| Plane detection | Detected surfaces such as floors, tables, walls and doors. | To identify a surface on which content may be placed. |
| World tracking | The headset’s position and orientation, plus support for world anchors. | To position content relative to the environment so it can remain associated with a location. |
| Scene reconstruction | Information about the surroundings’ shape as a mesh. | To represent environmental geometry in an app’s scene. |
These distinctions come from Apple’s ARKit documentation. A detected plane is not the same as a mesh of surrounding geometry, and neither alone means the headset has a complete understanding of every object in the room.
How a scene mesh enters an app
In Apple’s scene-reconstruction sample, an app retrieves mesh-anchor information and updates mesh entities when anchors are added or updated. In practical terms, the app uses those updates to maintain a representation of environmental geometry in its own scene. The sample describes one visionOS implementation; it does not establish how complete or accurate a room representation will be, or how another vendor implements its system. See Apple’s scene-reconstruction sample.

How the capabilities work together
An app can use hand data to respond to a gesture, world tracking to locate the headset and support world anchors, and plane detection or scene reconstruction to work with nearby surfaces and geometry. Together, these inputs let developers build interactions that connect digital content with the physical environment. The documented capabilities are separate data providers, however; an app’s behavior depends on which providers it uses and what it does with their data.

App access and privacy
Hand tracking data is not automatically available to every app. Apple documents a Hands Tracking capability and a usage description that explains how an app uses the sensor data. For visionOS development, consult Apple’s Hands Tracking capability documentation for the access requirements.

What to compare across headsets
When evaluating a mixed-reality system, look at each capability separately rather than treating “tracking” or “mapping” as a single feature:
- Hand data: Does the system provide hand anchors, joint positions or rotations, and what does the documentation say an app can access?
- Environmental output: Does it identify planes, provide a scene mesh, or offer both? These outputs serve different purposes.
- World tracking and anchors: Can the system track headset position and orientation and let apps associate content with locations in the environment?
- App access: Are capabilities gated by permissions, entitlements or usage descriptions?
Apple’s materials provide a concrete visionOS example, not a complete cross-vendor comparison. They also do not establish a general tracking-accuracy figure, latency, sensing range or room-mapping performance benchmark, so those should be checked in the documentation for the specific headset and app rather than assumed.
