A Magic: The Gathering Prerelease Pack—often called a prerelease kit—is designed for playing Sealed at a set’s Prerelease. A Bundle is a separate product aimed more at opening boosters and stocking up on lands and accessories. The exact contents change by set, so compare products from the same set before buying.
What is the difference between a Prerelease Pack and a Bundle?
The main difference is purpose. A Prerelease Pack is the event product used to build a Sealed deck. A Bundle is a collection-oriented product that typically includes boosters, basic lands and storage or gameplay accessories.

“Prerelease kit” is common player shorthand; Wizards of the Coast calls the product a “Prerelease Pack.” Wizards says players receive the pack when they register for a Prerelease event. If you are attending, check with the store whether your registration includes the pack rather than buying one separately.

These are examples, not a guarantee of what another set’s products contain. For instance, the Foundations Bundle lists nine Play Boosters and 40 basic lands, while the cited Foundations Prerelease Pack lists six boosters. Promo details also differ: the Foundations Pack lists a year-stamped promo, while the Lorwyn Eclipsed guide says its promos are no longer year-stamped. Which one should you choose?
Choose a Prerelease Pack for the event
If you plan to play Sealed at a Prerelease, the Prerelease Pack is the relevant product: you build your deck from the cards in the pack, adding basic lands. A typical Sealed deck is 40 cards. Since the pack is provided through event registration, ask the store what your entry covers before purchasing a separate pack.

Choose a Bundle for more boosters and lands
If your priority is opening boosters at home or keeping basic lands and accessories on hand, a Bundle may fit better. The cited Foundations Bundle has nine Play Boosters and 40 basic lands, compared with six Play Boosters in that set’s Prerelease Pack. That comparison applies to Foundations; do not assume the same counts for another set.

Use the set name as well as the product name when checking contents. Bundles, packs, promos and regional extras can vary, and a retailer listing may not make the edition clear. The official product guide establishes the listed contents, but it does not establish a retailer’s current stock or price.

Can you use a Bundle for a Prerelease?
A Bundle is not the Prerelease Pack supplied through event registration. The event’s intended sealed-play product is the registered player’s Prerelease Pack. If you want to use a different product, ask the store whether its event rules allow it; the product comparison alone does not establish that a Bundle can substitute for the event pack.

Prereleases take place at local game stores before a set’s full release. Wizards’ general Prerelease FAQ says most events last four to five hours, including deckbuilding, pairings and breaks. The store supplies the basic lands needed for play, so you do not need to buy lands just to attend. Check with your local store for its schedule and event details.
