Cypress’s scale option controls whether the captured application is scaled to fit the browser viewport; it is not a setting that directly increases screenshot resolution. Cypress documents its default as false, but runner screenshots force scaling to true. To diagnose blur, identify the capture mode, inspect the saved image’s pixel dimensions, and separate the saved file from Cypress’s scaled preview.
What Cypress’s screenshot scale option does
In the Cypress.Screenshot API, scale means whether to scale the application to fit into the browser viewport. Its documented default is false. Cypress forces it to true for runner captures, which include the browser viewport and Cypress Command Log.

That setting is distinct from choosing a larger CSS viewport or requesting more output pixels. Cypress also does not simulate devicePixelRatio, so viewport width and height should not be treated as the saved image’s physical pixel dimensions. The cy.viewport() documentation notes that Cypress may scale and center the app in its preview when the screen cannot display all configured viewport pixels. A preview that looks soft is not, by itself, proof that the saved PNG is blurry.
Cypress’s documentation says: “Scaling the app should not affect any calculations or behavior of your application (in fact it won’t even know it’s being scaled).” That statement concerns application calculations and behavior; it does not promise that scaling has no effect on screenshot sharpness.

Identify the capture mode before changing settings
Cypress supports distinct screenshot modes, and they do not behave identically:
- Viewport: captures the app in the current browser viewport.
- Full page: scrolls and stitches captures from the top to the bottom of the page.
- Runner: includes the browser viewport and Cypress Command Log; Cypress forces
scale: true. - Element: captures a selected element rather than the full viewport; use the command’s element-capture options when that is your goal.
Failure screenshots are coerced to runner capture, according to the screenshot API. Therefore, a setting that works for an explicit viewport capture may not produce the same result for a failure screenshot. The cy.screenshot() command documentation also describes full-page stitching and screenshot callback details.

How to check the actual saved screenshot
- Record how the image was produced: explicit viewport, full page, runner, element, or automatic failure screenshot.
- Check whether
scalewas passed to.screenshot()or set globally withCypress.Screenshot.defaults(). Defaults can affect screenshot commands and failure screenshots. - Use
onAfterScreenshotto inspect the saved path and reported dimensions, as described in the command documentation. For example:cy.get('.report').screenshot({ onAfterScreenshot($el, props) { console.log('Saved screenshot:', props.path); console.log('Screenshot dimensions:', props.dimensions); }, }); - Open the saved PNG in an image viewer or inspect its file dimensions with your usual image tooling. Compare those pixel dimensions with the intended output, not just with how large the preview pane renders the image.
- Repeat the capture in the same browser and execution mode after changing one variable at a time.
The callback example is intended for an element capture; for a page screenshot, call cy.screenshot({ onAfterScreenshot(...) { ... } }) with the same callback. Use the saved path and dimensions to establish whether the artifact itself is unexpectedly small or the preview is merely being resized.

First decide whether you need a larger CSS layout or more saved pixels. Increasing viewportWidth and viewportHeight changes the page’s CSS viewport, but does not automatically guarantee a higher-resolution file. Cypress’s engineering discussion explains that the app can still be scaled to fit the available iframe. Inspect the output dimensions after changing the viewport rather than assuming a resolution multiplier.

For browser-scale experiments, Cypress’s engineering blog discusses device scale factor and gives the Chrome argument --force-device-scale-factor=1. Treat this as an environment-specific diagnostic, not a universal blur fix: verify the saved dimensions and appearance in the actual browser and headed or headless run mode you use. Cypress does not simulate devicePixelRatio.
For repeatable visual checks, hold the rendering environment steady: use the same Cypress and browser versions, operating system, installed fonts, display scaling, and fixed viewport where possible. Cypress’s visual testing guidance notes these as sources of rendering differences.

Common causes and fixes
| What you observe | Likely explanation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Runner or failure screenshot looks scaled | Runner capture forces scale: true; failure screenshots use runner capture. |
Confirm the capture type. If you need an application-only image, explicitly capture the viewport or target element rather than relying on a failure screenshot. |
| Preview looks blurry, but the image may be fine | The preview can scale and center the app to fit available screen space. | Inspect the saved file’s dimensions and view it at native size outside the preview. |
| Larger viewport values did not yield more pixels | CSS viewport dimensions and physical screenshot dimensions are not interchangeable; iframe scaling can also constrain the rendered app. | Check the saved PNG dimensions after capture and validate any browser device-scale-factor change in the target run mode. |
| Visual differences vary between machines or runs | OS, browser version, display scaling, and installed fonts can alter rendering. | Fix the environment and viewport before comparing screenshots. |
| Full-page output looks inconsistent with a viewport capture | Full-page capture scrolls and stitches screenshots. | Check the capture mode and compare equivalent page regions; do not treat a stitched capture as identical to a single viewport image. |
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Full-page capture involves scrolling and stitching, so it is a different capture path from a single viewport image. For reliable visual comparisons, keep the mode and rendering environment constant. The available Cypress guidance does not establish a typical resolution, a universal improvement from changing scale, or how prevalent blurry screenshots are; measure your own saved artifact instead of assuming a specific pixel gain.

cy.screenshot() captures images; it does not compare them. Cypress’s visual testing guidance names Applitools and SmartBear VisualTest as services with Cypress integrations. Those comparison workflows may help detect rendering changes, but they do not resolve a capture-resolution issue by themselves.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does scale: false guarantee a sharper Cypress screenshot?
No. It controls whether Cypress scales the app to fit the viewport; it does not guarantee a particular saved pixel dimension or sharpness.
Why can a Cypress preview look different from the PNG file?
Cypress may scale and center the preview to fit the available screen. Judge the saved artifact by its actual dimensions and appearance at native size.
