To capture a public website with Cloudinary in Node.js, enable Cloudinary’s URL2PNG Website Screenshots add-on, then use the Node.js SDK to build a signed delivery URL with type: "url2png". The add-on performs the browser capture; the SDK alone is not a general-purpose screenshot service. Keep signing credentials on your server, and upload the result separately if you need a permanent Media Library asset.
What Cloudinary URL2PNG does
Cloudinary’s URL2PNG Website Screenshots add-on captures a public website and brings the resulting image into Cloudinary’s delivery and transformation workflow. In Node.js, you request that capture through the url2png delivery type. You must have a Cloudinary account and register for the add-on before using it. This workflow is for public websites. The documented add-on is not a way to reuse a user’s logged-in browser session or capture a private page behind authentication.

Install Cloudinary’s Node.js SDK and configure it using the official Node.js integration guide. The SDK can read your cloud_name, api_key, and api_secret from CLOUDINARY_URL, or you can set them with the SDK configuration method. - Enable the URL2PNG add-on for your Cloudinary account.
- Store credentials in server-side environment variables or another protected secret store.
- Do not expose the API secret in browser code, a public repository, or an unprotected environment file. Keep credential files out of version control.
Generate a signed screenshot URL
Run this code in server-side Node.js after configuring the SDK credentials:

Cloudinary’s reference identifies that delivery type as requiring the URL2PNG add-on; the SDK constructs the URL rather than taking the screenshot itself. Consult the add-on documentation for the current URL2PNG resource-path syntax when adding capture options.

By default, delivery URLs using this add-on must be signed or eagerly generated. Cloudinary also provides an account Security setting that can allow unsigned add-on transformations. Prefer signing unless you have deliberately reviewed the exposure implications of allowing unsigned transformations. Do not move signing code or the API secret into a browser application.

Set capture behavior separately from image output
URL2PNG capture inputs control what the browser captures; Cloudinary image transformations control how the resulting image is delivered. Keep those two jobs distinct when tuning a screenshot.

Viewport size is not the same as final image dimensions: the former affects page rendering, while resize and crop transformations adapt the output. Cloudinary supports adding a transformation array to the SDK URL-generation options. For exact URL2PNG parameter names and encoding, use the add-on documentation rather than guessing at path components.
Choose dynamic delivery, eager generation, or a stored asset
Signed dynamic URL
Generate a signed URL when you want delivery to remain dynamic and to construct the URL as part of your application’s request flow. This is distinct from running an authenticated generation workflow ahead of time.

Eager generation
Eager generation is the alternative Cloudinary names for add-on delivery URLs that are not simply signed for on-demand delivery. It lets you generate through an authenticated API workflow in advance. Check the current add-on documentation for the supported eager-generation request details.

A generated screenshot URL is not, by itself, a promise that you have saved a permanent managed asset. If the application needs a durable Media Library resource, generate the screenshot and then upload the result through a separate authenticated Cloudinary step. Cloudinary demonstrates that pattern in its website screenshot tutorial. Treat URL generation and asset persistence as separate operations.

Troubleshooting
- The URL does not produce a screenshot: confirm the URL2PNG add-on is enabled for the account and that the URL uses
type: "url2png". - Cloudinary rejects delivery: check whether the URL is signed or eagerly generated. If your account relies on unsigned add-on transformations, verify the relevant Security setting.
- The screenshot layout is wrong: adjust the capture viewport or user agent; changing the final resize dimensions does not change how the page was rendered.
- Content is missing: a dynamic page may need a capture delay. Set it using the current URL2PNG option syntax documented by Cloudinary.
- The screenshot looks right but is not retained as an asset: perform the separate authenticated upload to the Media Library.
- A private page cannot be captured as expected: the documented workflow targets public websites; it does not supply the visitor’s authenticated browser session.
