Scroll through the page to trigger loading, then wait for the final images to render before capturing. There is no universal wait time that works for every site or screenshot tool.
Why images are missing from a full-page screenshot
Lazy loading delays fetching or initializing images until they are visible or near the viewport. Cloudinary’s JavaScript image-transformation documentation describes its lazyload() plugin this way: “Lazy loading tells the browser not to download images that are not yet visible on the user’s screen, and wait until the user scrolls to that image.” Cloudinary’s JavaScript image transformations documentation shows a plugin example with configurable rootMargin and threshold; in that example, a threshold of 0.25 means loading starts when 25% of an image is visible. Those settings are an example, not a guarantee that every Cloudinary integration uses them.

If a capture tool takes a screenshot before below-the-fold images have entered the viewport, their deferred requests may not have started. The result can be blank space, a placeholder, or an older visual state. A reader discussion reports blank images on a JavaScript-rendered page unless the reader scrolls, but that is anecdotal and does not establish how every capture tool behaves: reader discussion of full-page screenshots.
How to trigger lazy-loaded images before capture
- Set the intended viewport. Use the viewport size relevant to the screenshot, since responsive layouts and image visibility can depend on it.
- Let initial scripts and layout settle. Start from the page’s initial state and give its client-side code time to run.
- Scroll through the area to capture. Move down in increments so images cross the viewport or approach it. On infinite-scroll pages, distinguish images in sections already present from new sections appended as you scroll.
- Wait for requests and rendering. After each relevant scroll, allow images to download and render. Do not assume a fixed delay will work on every site; the sources do not establish a universal duration.
- Capture the required area. If an image is still absent, check whether its image element exists, whether its URL has been assigned, whether the request failed, and whether the capture tool changed the viewport or script behavior.
A reader report describes scrolling before capture as a way to trigger image loading, but this should be treated as a practical technique rather than a tool-independent guarantee: reported full-page capture issue.

Check the Cloudinary implementation, not just the screenshot
Lazy loading and placeholders
Cloudinary’s JavaScript transformation documentation describes plugins for lazy loading, responsive images, accessibility, and placeholders. Its example order is lazyload(), responsive(), accessibility(), then placeholder(); plugins can be omitted when they are not needed. The documentation also shows combining lazy loading with placeholders. A placeholder means that some visual content may appear while the full image downloads; it does not prove the final asset has loaded, so a capture intended to show the finished image should wait for that asset.
Reserve space for images
Cloudinary recommends setting image width and height attributes to reduce layout shifts as images load. Reserving space helps keep content from jumping during capture, but does not itself trigger a lazy-loaded image request. See Cloudinary’s JavaScript image transformation documentation.

WordPress plugin scope
For its WordPress plugin, Cloudinary says lazy loading is enabled by default as part of setup and that users can configure the behavior and placeholder. The documentation says transformations used for lazy loading count against usage, and that the WordPress plugin does not support lazy loading for videos. Balance capture completeness with page performance
Lazy loading and screenshot capture optimize for different moments: lazy loading postpones work until content approaches the viewport, while a full-page capture needs the final visual state across the whole page. When evaluating an implementation, consider when requests begin, what appears before the final asset, whether layout space is reserved, how above-the-fold images are prioritized, and whether capture automation triggers visibility and waits for completion.

Cloudinary’s LQIP guidance says, “Never lazy load the LCP image (Largest Contentful Paint),” and recommends measuring the effect of LQIP implementation on LCP. It also notes that large LQIPs can delay the final LCP image; it gives no universal numerical cutoff. Cloudinary’s LQIP and lazy-loading guidance.
Responsive image delivery is a separate concern from triggering lazy loading. Cloudinary’s responsive-images documentation says JavaScript-based responsive approaches can delay image-load start, while server-side client-hints delivery can avoid that delay in supported Chromium-based browsers; a sizes attribute is still required. Neither approach removes the need to trigger lazy-loaded content for a screenshot. The documentation was last updated June 19, 2026: Cloudinary responsive images.

Cloudinary recommends serving images at or near their final display size rather than downloading full-size assets and shrinking them in the browser. Its image-optimization documentation also notes that f_auto may not return the expected format when a delivery URL is opened directly, because the browser may not advertise supported image formats in the Accept header. That direct-URL preview issue is distinct from a screenshot missing an image because its lazy-load trigger has not fired: Cloudinary image optimization.
Lazy loading for Google Search is a different problem
Google’s crawling guidance says relevant content should load when it becomes visible, and warns that Google Search does not scroll or click to trigger content. Its guidance discusses browser-native lazy loading, IntersectionObserver, and compatible JavaScript approaches: Google Search Central: Fix lazy-loaded website content. Crawling behavior is not the same as screenshot automation: a screenshot workflow can scroll the page, while Google says its crawler does not interact with pages through those user actions.
