It does not mean “no configuration”: the best conventions are visible, consistent, and straightforward to override. They become a liability when implicit behavior is hard to discover or when a project repeatedly needs exceptions.
What convention over configuration means
A framework convention is a default rule about how an application is organized or behaves. If you follow the expected structure or naming pattern, the framework can infer what you mean and you can omit configuration that would otherwise repeat across projects.

That shifts routine decisions from each application to the framework. The benefit is not a guaranteed number of hours saved; it is a simpler starting point with fewer setup choices to make and maintain. You can still configure the parts that are unusual or important to your application.
Why it still matters in 2026
Current framework documentation continues to show the principle in practice. The Spring Boot project describes its approach this way: “Spring Boot takes an opinionated view of building production-ready Spring applications. Favors convention over configuration and is designed to get you up and running as quickly as possible.” Spring Boot project wiki.

Spring Boot illustrates the value of a coherent starting point; the broader Spring Framework emphasizes choice, flexibility, and the ability to make decisions later. An opinionated default and a flexible ecosystem are not opposites: defaults can cover common cases while modules and integrations leave room for specific needs. Spring Framework overview.
The enduring case is practical rather than statistical: if a framework consistently answers routine questions about structure and wiring, a team can spend less attention on repeating those choices. The official sources cited here do not establish a universal productivity percentage, nor do conventions by themselves guarantee better security or performance.

How frameworks balance conventions with explicit choices
Grails: conventional structure with extension points
The Grails 7.1.5 guide has a section devoted to directory structure and convention over configuration. It also documents configuration types, profiles, plugins, and ways to customize framework components. A project can therefore use the expected structure for ordinary cases without giving up explicit settings or extensions when it needs them. Grails Framework 7.1.5 guide.

Rails: defaults can depend on framework version
The Rails configuration guide explains application, environment, and initialization settings. It also documents config.load_defaults, which loads defaults associated with a target Rails version, and describes defaults for Rails 8.1. This is a reminder that a framework default is not necessarily timeless: version-targeted behavior can affect what an application does after an upgrade. Configuring Rails Applications.

Django: useful deduction, but not confusing magic
Django’s design philosophy puts a limit on implicit behavior: “Explicit is better than implicit.” Its guidance favors “magic” only when it provides substantial convenience without confusing developers. That is the central test for a convention: a shortcut is valuable when its rule can be understood, not merely when it removes lines of configuration. Django design philosophies.
Django’s settings documentation also describes both a default settings module and an explicit settings.configure() route for standalone use. If an application supplies a custom default settings module, it replaces Django’s defaults; the application must provide settings used by the imported code. An escape hatch is useful, but it has requirements of its own. Django settings.

ASP.NET Core: explicit configuration can override defaults
ASP.NET Core’s configuration documentation describes configuration sources and their precedence, including command-line arguments and environment variables. It is a useful example of preconfigured behavior alongside explicit overrides, though Microsoft’s page is evidence for its configuration system rather than a claim that Microsoft labels the whole framework “convention over configuration.” Microsoft Learn: Configuration in ASP.NET Core.
When conventions help—and when to override them
| Situation | Prefer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated, low-value setup follows a structure the team already understands | The framework convention | It avoids restating the same predictable decision in each project. |
| A requirement is unusual, consequential, or differs from the framework’s expected behavior | An explicit setting or extension point | The decision is easier to see, review, and maintain when it is stated directly. |
| A default is difficult for the team to locate or explain | Make the behavior explicit or document the convention locally | Hidden behavior known to only one person creates avoidable coupling. |
| A framework upgrade changes or may change versioned defaults | Review the target version’s defaults before adopting them | Inherited behavior may differ from what the application previously relied on. |
| Local requirements regularly force exceptions to a convention | Reassess the fit, rather than accumulating unexplained overrides | A convention saves effort only while its ordinary path matches the application. |
How to evaluate a framework’s conventions
There is no universally best framework on the evidence here. Compare how each one behaves where routine defaults meet your actual project needs:
- Discoverability: Can a new team member find the rule in current documentation or the project itself?
- Consistency: Do naming and structure predict behavior reliably across components?
- Override clarity: Is the supported way to change a default understandable and maintainable?
- Versioning: Are defaults tied to framework versions, and can the project choose when to adopt them?
- Project fit: Do integrations, environment-specific settings, domain requirements, and team familiarity align with the framework’s expected path?
These questions also help teams avoid treating convention as dogma. A default should reduce unnecessary choices, not prevent a meaningful one.
What to do during an upgrade
- Identify the framework version the application currently targets and the version it will move to.
- Read the target version’s documentation for defaults and configuration behavior; in Rails, check the version-related settings described for
config.load_defaults. - Review explicit overrides and custom settings alongside the defaults they replace or modify.
- Exercise the application’s important paths after the change, paying particular attention to behavior the project previously relied on implicitly.
This makes defaults part of an intentional upgrade decision rather than something silently inherited. The exact checks depend on the framework and application; the cited guides do not prescribe one cross-framework upgrade procedure.
