Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst identify which drive is missing: the disk you want to clone or restore, or the separate location that holds the image file. Those are different devices in Clonezilla’s device-image workflow. If the internal disk is missing, check whether it appears in BIOS/UEFI; if firmware sees it, update Clonezilla Live and investigate storage-controller support before changing any storage settings.
Identify which drive Clonezilla cannot see
Clonezilla’s device-image workflow uses a disk being cloned or restored and, separately, an image repository. The repository is where Clonezilla reads or writes an image; it is not necessarily the disk you are cloning. If the disk you want to clone or restore is absent, choosing a different repository will not make that disk appear.

- Missing source or destination disk: You cannot select the internal or attached drive that should be read or overwritten.
- Missing image repository: You cannot select the USB drive, external disk, or network location containing the image.
Clonezilla’s restore instructions say it scans the machine’s disks every few seconds and displays the results. That describes the documented workflow, not a guarantee that every drive or storage controller will be supported.

Check whether BIOS or UEFI detects the drive
Restart the computer and open its BIOS/UEFI setup. Look for a storage, drive, or NVMe information page; the menu name varies by manufacturer. Check whether the missing drive is listed there.
#1 Best Overall
- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
If the drive is absent from firmware
This points away from a Clonezilla menu problem. Check the physical connection, drive, slot, and firmware configuration. On a desktop, a loose data or power cable is one possibility. Avoid opening a device or changing settings without the manufacturer’s instructions for that model. If firmware still does not list the drive, resolve that issue before troubleshooting Clonezilla.
If the drive is present in firmware
The machine can detect the drive at the firmware level, so focus next on the live environment: its release, boot medium, and the storage path between the drive and the operating system. The installed operating system detecting a drive does not prove that Clonezilla Live supports the same controller configuration.

Boot a current Clonezilla Live release and check its device list
Use the current Clonezilla stable downloads listing as a diagnostic baseline. The listing showed Clonezilla Live 3.3.3-37 when checked on October 4, 2026. The project’s stable changelog says that this release used Linux kernel 7.1.4-1 and includes a July 24, 2026 fix for “no size no file system detected for bare disk with file system.” That is a version-specific fix; it does not establish that an unrelated missing-drive symptom has the same cause.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Download the current Live image from the official listing and recreate the boot medium using the project’s USB instructions. Confirm the medium boots and that you selected an image appropriate for the computer’s architecture and boot mode.
- Start Clonezilla and let its disk scan finish. Check the actual device list rather than relying on the name the drive had in the installed operating system.
- Where the interface provides capacity or model information, use it to identify the intended drive. Do not guess which device is the source or destination.
A USB flash drive can be useful for creating or testing Clonezilla boot media, as described in the project’s Live USB documentation. It will not repair an internal disk that firmware cannot see or make an unsupported storage controller work.

If the image repository is the missing device
Reconnect the intended USB or external storage and follow Clonezilla’s repository-selection workflow. The project’s general Live usage documentation lists network repository options including SSH, NFS, and Samba. Choose a network location only if it is available and configured for your setup; a repository problem is separate from an internal disk missing from the source or destination list.
If firmware sees the drive but Clonezilla still does not
Record the computer model, drive type, firmware storage mode, Clonezilla release, and any controller identifiers you can find. Then consult the computer manufacturer’s support information for that exact model and configuration. The available documentation does not establish a universal fix involving Intel VMD, RST, RAID, or AHCI.

Do not disable VMD/RST or switch RAID to AHCI as a blanket troubleshooting step. Storage-mode behavior depends on the machine and operating system; changing it may prevent the installed operating system from booting. Follow model-specific manufacturer instructions before making a change.
Verify source and destination before cloning or restoring
Once the intended disks appear, positively identify the source and destination before starting an operation. Clonezilla disk imaging can overwrite the destination. If the device identity is unclear, stop rather than select a disk based only on its position in the list.
Quick Recap
