What does Broadcom make?
Broadcom’s portfolio is best understood as technology that helps larger systems move, connect, process, store and manage data. Its semiconductor products are often components inside equipment made or operated by other companies; its infrastructure software helps organizations build and run technology environments.
Broadcom describes itself as providing semiconductors and infrastructure software for global organizations’ complex, mission-critical needs. Its corporate overview gives that concise summary, while its solutions portfolio shows the range of markets it serves.
Broadcom’s semiconductor business
Broadcom designs, develops and supplies semiconductor and semiconductor-based solutions. The products described in its FY2025 Form 10-K include digital and mixed-signal devices, network interface cards, modules, switches, subsystems and, in some cases, complete racks. In plain terms, these are building blocks and larger assemblies used in technology infrastructure—not necessarily chips sold directly to consumers under the Broadcom name.

Where Broadcom semiconductors are used
- Data centers and enterprise computing: networking and other systems used in enterprise and AI data centers, servers, storage and networking equipment.
- Communications and connectivity: wireless devices and base stations, telecommunications equipment, broadband access, home connectivity and set-top boxes.
- Industrial and energy systems: factory automation, power generation and alternative-energy applications.
- Other electronic systems: electronic displays and related products.
The company’s FY2025 Form 10-K, filed December 18, 2025, describes these product types and markets. The breadth matters: Broadcom is not limited to one familiar device category, and a Broadcom component may be embedded in equipment whose finished product bears another company’s name.
Broadcom’s infrastructure software business
Broadcom’s other major business supplies software for organizations that operate complex IT environments. The FY2025 filing groups this portfolio around private and hybrid cloud, application development and delivery, software-defined edge, application networking and security, mainframe, distributed and cybersecurity solutions, and Fibre Channel storage-area networking (SAN).

These products address a different layer of the technology stack from semiconductors. Rather than providing a physical component that moves or processes data, infrastructure software helps organizations build, operate, secure and manage enterprise systems.
Where VMware fits
VMware is a prominent part of Broadcom’s infrastructure-software business. VMware Cloud Foundation is one example in the private-cloud category. In May 2026, Broadcom announced version 9.1 as a private-cloud platform for production AI workloads. That is Broadcom’s description of the product and its intended use, not an independent performance assessment.

Also in May 2026, Broadcom announced that LSEG had renewed its partnership, with the work centered on VMware Cloud Foundation. Broadcom said it would provide professional services for the rollout. These are broad categories rather than a boundary between unrelated companies: both businesses sell technology used in larger systems, but the delivered product and the customer’s immediate problem differ.

How Broadcom’s history shaped its portfolio
Broadcom’s FY2025 Form 10-K describes a corporate history spanning more than 60 years, with roots and acquisitions connected to AT&T/Bell Labs, Lucent, Hewlett-Packard, LSI, Broadcom Corporation, Brocade, CA, Symantec Enterprise Security and VMware. That list helps explain why today’s portfolio spans semiconductors and enterprise software. It is a high-level corporate-history thread, not a list of current standalone divisions.
