Blu-ray Player Settings to Change for the Best Picture and Sound

The best Blu-ray player settings are the ones your whole system can handle. Start with resolution set to Auto, keep film and HDR output enabled when the connected equipment supports them, and choose audio output to match the TV, receiver or soundbar. Menu names and capabilities vary by player, so check the manual for your exact model.

Start with the HDMI signal path

Before changing picture or sound options, identify how the player is connected: directly to the TV, through an AV receiver or soundbar, or by separate HDMI connections for video and audio. The TV input, every device in between, and the cables all affect which formats can pass. A setting that works in one setup may give you a blank screen or no sound in another.

  • Check the specifications for the player, the particular TV HDMI input, and any receiver or soundbar in the path.
  • Confirm that the receiver or soundbar supports the video format you want to pass through as well as the disc’s audio format.
  • Check which player HDMI output carries video, audio, or audio only on your model.
  • Use cables that support the bandwidth required by your chosen video mode.

For model-specific menu names and supported formats, use the player’s manual. Panasonic’s manuals for selected DP-UB models, for example, describe their own HDMI format and output options: DP-UB150/DP-UB154/DP-UB450 manual and DP-UB420 manual.

Set video resolution to Auto first

If your player offers an Output Video Resolution or Resolution setting, Auto is a sensible starting point. Sony says Auto selects the optimum resolution for connected equipment on the applicable players. Panasonic also documents automatic HDMI video-format selection on certain models. These options let the player respond to the connected display rather than forcing one resolution that another device may not accept.

A forced 4K output can produce no picture if the TV or a receiver in the middle of the chain cannot accept or pass 4K. In that situation, Sony recommends trying Auto or connecting the player directly to a 4K-compatible TV. If a new setting leaves the screen blank, restore Auto or follow the recovery procedure in the manual for your model; do not assume that a higher fixed resolution is always an upgrade.

Sony’s resolution guidance and connection checks are documented here. The exact menu label and the formats available depend on the player and the equipment connected to it.

Use 24p for compatible film playback

24p output is intended for film material recorded at 24 frames per second. When the player and display support it, keeping 24p enabled or set to Auto can preserve that frame rate for cinema playback. Panasonic’s instructions for applicable players say compatible 4K or 1080/24p TVs can receive 24p output; other BD/DVD material may be output at 60p.

If 24p output is distorted or the connected TV cannot handle it, turn the setting off as a compatibility fallback. Panasonic gives that advice for distorted output, and Sony recommends disabling 24p in a specific incompatible-TV troubleshooting case for the UBP-X700 family. This is not a universal reason to switch 24p off. See the applicable Panasonic manual or Sony troubleshooting guidance for flickering video.

Match HDR output to every device in the chain

HDR works only when the player, disc, TV and any receiver or soundbar in the video path support the format being used. Selecting an HDR option cannot make an SDR-only TV display HDR. Sony says its applicable player adjusts HDR features to SDR according to TV type when playing on a non-HDR TV. Panasonic’s instructions for HDR10+ require both an HDR10+-compatible connected device and a disc that supports HDR10+.

Check the manual for the exact HDR settings and formats supported by your model. Panasonic’s HDR10+ information is available here; Sony’s explanation of HDR output on applicable players is here.

Leave Deep Color alone unless troubleshooting a compatibility problem

Deep Color is an output option for displays that support it; it is not a routine picture-quality switch to disable. Panasonic manuals describe Deep Color as an option for a compatible connected TV. Sony’s recommendation to turn it off is limited to a particular flickering or compatibility procedure for UBP-X700-family players. If you see flickering or lose the picture after changing a format setting, consult the exact model’s troubleshooting steps rather than applying that fix to every setup.

Check the cable and the HDMI input before buying anything

For 4K output, Sony recommends a 4K HDMI cable with 18 Gbps bandwidth or a Premium High Speed HDMI cable. Panasonic warns that some 4K output modes may not display correctly through a cable that does not support 18 Gbps. Also verify that the specific TV input—and any receiver or soundbar between player and TV—supports the format you are trying to send.

Choose audio settings for the way the player is connected

Player connected directly to the TV

Use the player’s HDMI output that carries both video and audio. On Sony models with separate HDMI outputs, Sony says to select Auto or HDMI1 for TV audio when the television is connected to OUT 1. If the TV is silent, check that the player’s selected output matches the physical connection and that the TV is on the correct input. These instructions apply to the Sony configurations described in its dual-HDMI support article.

Player connected through a receiver or soundbar

Set the player’s audio output according to the formats the receiving device supports and the route the signal takes. Sony lists HDMI support for formats including multichannel LPCM, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS:X on applicable products; that list should not be assumed to apply to every Blu-ray player. Its description of digital output is more limited. Check the specifications for your player and receiver before choosing bitstream or another output mode; see Sony’s audio output guidance.

Specific Panasonic DP-UB820 or DP-UB9000 soundbar arrangement

For the connection described in Panasonic’s guide for the DP-UB820 and DP-UB9000, the recommended settings are Dolby Audio and DTS/DTS-HD Bitstream, with BD-Video Secondary Audio turned off, for Dolby Atmos/TrueHD. The guide also covers using the player’s separate video and audio HDMI outputs with a compatible soundbar-to-TV path. Apply these settings only to that model and configuration; another soundbar, receiver or routing arrangement may require different choices. Read Panasonic’s soundbar connection guide.

What to do when the picture flickers or disappears

  1. Return to a safe resolution. If the screen goes blank after selecting a fixed mode, try Auto or follow the model’s documented recovery procedure.
  2. Check every device in the video chain. Confirm that the selected TV input and any receiver or soundbar can accept and pass the resolution, HDR format and frame rate.
  3. Check the connection and cable capability. Verify that the correct HDMI ports are in use and that the cable supports the chosen 4K mode.
  4. Use mode-specific troubleshooting only when relevant. Sony’s advice to disable 24p or Deep Color addresses an identified compatibility or flickering case for the UBP-X700 family, not a general best-picture setup.
  5. Test a simpler route if needed. Connecting the player directly to a compatible TV can help isolate a receiver or soundbar issue, but may change how audio reaches external speakers.

For a 4K picture problem, consult Sony’s resolution and connection guidance; for the specified UBP-X700-family flicker case, see its troubleshooting steps.
