Choose Black & White if you mainly want the original god-game premise and the experience of teaching a creature through your actions. Choose Black & White 2 if you want that premise combined with city building, strategic expansion, and more direct control over warfare. That is a preference-based recommendation from the games’ descriptions and developer comments, not a claim that one is universally better.

What makes Black & White the better fit?
The original is the more natural choice if the god-and-creature relationship is the main attraction. You guide a creature that learns from how you treat it; the appeal is not simply issuing orders but seeing the creature’s behavior develop in response to your example.
The sequel retains creature teaching, but Lionhead’s Peter Molyneux said the team had reworked it. In a 2005 GameSpot interview, he described letting players see the creature’s thoughts and teach or change lessons. He also acknowledged flaws in the original’s opening, creature learning, and people-management systems. That is the developer’s retrospective, not a consensus review verdict; it helps explain why someone focused on the first game’s original approach may prefer to start there.
What changes in Black & White 2?
Black & White 2 expands the strategic side of the formula. Molyneux described it as a combination of a god game and real-time strategy, adding a more explicit RTS component to the series. The game’s design asks whether you will be a god of war or peace: the contemporary release report describes forceful expansion on one path and winning enemies over with a more attractive society on the other. That makes the sequel the clearer recommendation for players who want to build settlements and connect that development to broader strategic choices and battles. It is not simply a creature-focused return to the first game: city building and warfare are central parts of its identity.
Release history and present-day access

For the original on Windows 10 or 11, a fan-maintained community setup guide warns that the game does not work smoothly out of the box and describes unofficial disc-and-patch steps. Treat that as community guidance, not publisher support, and check the guide for current instructions before relying on a particular patch sequence. The sources here do not establish current Windows compatibility for Black & White 2 or confirm official digital-store availability for either game. They also do not verify whether a particular used disc listing is available, legitimate, or in suitable condition.
