Chrome can capture the page area beyond the visible window without scrolling the live page through it. If a site loads images, embeds, or app content only after a scroll brings them near the viewport, that content may not exist yet when the screenshot is taken. Waiting can help with slow loading, but it will not trigger code that depends on scrolling.
Why full-page capture can miss scroll-loaded content
A full-page image describes how much of the page was captured, not necessarily what interactions happened first. The Chrome DevTools Protocol defines captureBeyondViewport as capturing beyond the viewport; Chromium’s full-page handler measures the page dimensions and captures beyond the viewport. Neither description says that Chrome scrolls through the page to trigger its scripts. The protocol documentation and Chromium’s PageHandler source describe those mechanics.

Many sites defer offscreen images or iframes until they approach the viewport. Other pages use scroll events or application logic to fetch or render sections on demand. If capture happens before those triggers run, the affected area may be blank, show a placeholder, or be absent. The mechanism varies by site and capture path; a missing section is not automatically a lazy-loaded image problem. Chrome’s documentation on deferred image and iframe loading explains this general behavior.

DevTools’ “Capture full size screenshot,” headless Chrome’s --screenshot, browser extensions, and extensions that capture a visible tab may use different workflows. The exact method and Chrome version matter, so do not assume every missing section has the same cause.

For headless Chrome, the --timeout option sets a maximum wait in milliseconds before content is captured by --screenshot, --dump-dom, or --print-to-pdf, even if the page is still loading. See Chrome’s headless documentation. A timeout allows more time; it does not promise to scroll the page.
Choose the fix that matches the symptom
| What you see | What to try | What it will not fix |
|---|---|---|
| Content is delayed but loads without interaction | Wait longer before capture. For headless Chrome, increase --timeout. |
A wait does not trigger scroll handlers. Chrome headless documentation. |
| Content appears only near the viewport | Scroll through the page, pausing at each section so content can load, then capture. If needed, capture successive viewport sections and stitch them. | This is a practical workaround, not a guarantee for every site. Slow content and layout changes can create gaps or seams. Chrome’s deferred-loading documentation. |
| The bottom is cut off even though content appears to have loaded | Inspect page dimensions and whether content is in a nested scroll container. | Height measurement can be inaccurate in some scrollable-page cases; an issue discussion describes problems involving documentElement.scrollHeight. Lighthouse issue discussion. |
| You are not sure which explanation applies | Record the capture method, Chrome version, and whether the missing content appears after manually scrolling. | The screenshot alone may not reveal whether the cause was loading, interaction, or page-height measurement. |
Scroll and wait before capturing
For a page that loads sections on scroll, the key is to trigger the page’s own behavior before taking the final image. A simple manual check is often enough to distinguish scroll-triggered content from a slow request:

- Open the page and note which sections are missing from the full-page capture.
- Scroll down through those areas in the live page and wait for images, embeds, or content to appear.
- Capture again using the same method. If the content now appears, the original capture likely happened before the relevant loading or rendering trigger.
- If you need automation, use a workflow that scrolls in increments and waits at each position before capturing. For a single tall image, stitch viewport captures only after checking for sticky headers, layout shifts, and overlaps.
This procedure is practical guidance inferred from how deferred loading works; Chrome’s full-page capture documentation does not guarantee a particular scroll-and-wait workflow.
Check page height and nested scrolling when the bottom is missing
If scrolling reveals the content but the screenshot still ends early, investigate the measured page size and the page’s scroll structure. Some content may scroll inside a panel rather than the document. In other cases, documentElement.scrollHeight may not accurately represent the area that needs capturing; the Lighthouse issue discussion documents an example, not proof of a general current Chrome defect. For an API-based capture, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot from one GET request. For example, this cURL call saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. These features do not guarantee that a site’s scroll-triggered content will load—the page still has to render that content for it to be captured.

What this problem does—and does not—establish
There is no published failure-rate statistic in the cited sources for how often Chrome full-page screenshots omit content loaded on scroll. The protocol documentation, Chromium implementation, Chrome loading guidance, and Lighthouse issue discussion explain plausible mechanisms and failure modes, but they do not quantify their frequency.
