You can save and reuse authentication state, but protect that state file like a password: it can contain cookies or headers that let someone impersonate your account.
What you need before you start
- A Playwright project and a browser installed for it.
- An account with legitimate access to the specific page you intend to capture.
- The site’s ordinary sign-in flow, including any required multifactor authentication or subscription checks.
This workflow records a page your account can access; it does not bypass a paywall or grant access your account does not have. Authentication can succeed while a particular page remains unavailable under the site’s account or subscription rules.

Sign in and save Playwright authentication state
Playwright’s recommended pattern is to sign in through the UI, wait for a reliable indication that sign-in completed, then write browser state to a local file for later contexts. The official Playwright authentication guide uses the playwright/.auth directory and recommends excluding it from source control.

- Create the state directory and add it to
.gitignore:playwright/.auth. - Open the site’s login page in a browser context.
- Enter credentials through the site’s normal form and submit it.
- Wait for a post-login URL or a visible signed-in element that is dependable for that site. Do not save state immediately after clicking submit: redirects and delayed cookie creation can make an immediate snapshot unreliable.
- Save the context’s storage state to a file under
playwright/.auth.
The exact selectors and post-login condition vary by website; use selectors from the site you are authorized to access rather than assuming a generic login form. Playwright’s codegen documentation also describes saving authentication state for local use.

Open the paywalled page and capture it
Start a new browser context using the saved state, navigate to the target URL, and verify that the expected article or page content is actually present before taking the screenshot. A signed-in indicator alone does not prove the target page loaded or that the account has access to it.
Choose the right screenshot mode
| Mode | What it captures | Use it when |

Playwright documents these screenshot options in its screenshots guide. Use the API form appropriate to your installed version, and check the screenshot documentation for current method signatures and options.

Authentication state: what persists and what does not
Playwright browser contexts are isolated, and a context can be initialized with saved state. The authentication guide describes state for cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey (WebAuthn) authentication. Storage-state options are version-dependent: IndexedDB support was added in Playwright v1.51, while credentials support was added in v1.61. Check the version installed in your project before relying on those newer options; see the BrowserContext API reference.

Playwright’s authentication guide notes that session storage is domain-specific, is not persisted across page loads, and has no built-in storage-state persistence API. If the application relies on it, use the guide’s manual save-and-restore pattern with an initialization script, scoped to the expected origin. Do not copy session data into unrelated sites or contexts.

Protect the saved file
Playwright warns: “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” Keep the file local, exclude it from source control, restrict access to it, and delete or refresh it when no longer needed. Do not upload it as a debugging artifact or commit it with test fixtures.
Troubleshooting
The saved context redirects to the login page
- Possible cause: State was saved before the sign-in redirect or cookie creation completed, or the session has since expired.
- Fix: Repeat the normal login flow, wait for a post-login URL or signed-in element, save state again, and retry the target page.
The account appears signed in but the target is still paywalled
- Possible cause: The account may not be entitled to that particular page, or the site’s access rules may require an additional step.
- Fix: Confirm access through the site’s own interface with the authorized account. Playwright state cannot confer a subscription or override site permissions.
The page loads but the screenshot is blank or incomplete
- Possible cause: Navigation may have completed before the relevant content appeared, or the page may have rendered an access/error state instead of the expected article.
- Fix: Wait for a selector that identifies the expected content, inspect the page before capture, and choose viewport, element, or full-page capture to match the intended record.
Authentication works in one context but not another
- Possible cause: Required state may be outside the saved storage categories, especially if the site depends on session storage, or an option may not be supported by the installed Playwright version.
- Fix: Check the site’s storage behavior, use the documented scoped session-storage restoration pattern if necessary, and verify your Playwright version against the BrowserContext API.
