Why Choose P2P Instead of S3 for a File Transfer Product?

P2P can move file data directly between users, but connection setup and relays still matter. Compare it with S3’s multipart uploads and measure the real workload before claiming a speed or cost advantage.

A peer-to-peer (P2P) design can send file data directly between users instead of routing every byte through an application server. That can suit a product built around live transfers, but it does not eliminate connection servers, guarantee a direct route, or prove that P2P is faster or cheaper than Amazon S3. S3 supports parallel, retryable multipart uploads and performance options of its own.

The title’s first-person claim cannot be substantiated without the product’s implementation details and measurements. The comparison below explains what the architecture can change—and what evidence would be needed to explain why a particular product chose it.

What changes when file data travels peer to peer?

With a WebRTC data channel, a web application can send arbitrary application data between peers. When the connection takes a direct peer-to-peer route, the file data need not pass through the application server. MDN describes WebRTC data-channel traffic as protected by Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS), and explains the peer-to-peer data path in its WebRTC data-channel guide.

That is a statement about the transport path, not a claim that a product has no servers or that it stores no information. A service may still use servers for signaling, discovery, authentication, or other functions. DTLS protects the data channel in transit; by itself it does not establish how the application authenticates users, authorizes access, handles keys, secures endpoints, stores files, or treats metadata.

A direct route is not guaranteed

WebRTC connections need setup. The W3C specification describes signaling as out of band and includes STUN/TURN server configuration. STUN can help peers discover a route through network address translation; if a direct connection is unavailable, a TURN relay can carry the traffic instead. In that case, data passes through relay infrastructure, which has bandwidth and operating costs. The W3C’s WebRTC specification describes the peer-to-peer data API and connection requirements.

So “P2P” describes the intended data path, not an assurance that every transfer bypasses infrastructure. The actual result depends on the product’s signaling service, relay use, and fallback behavior.

What S3 offers for file transfers

S3 is not limited to uploading an entire file in one request. Its multipart upload feature splits an object into parts that can be uploaded independently and in parallel. If a part fails, it can be retried without sending the whole object again; an upload can also be paused and resumed. AWS recommends multipart upload for objects of 100 MB or larger, and documents checksum validation for object integrity in its multipart upload guide.

Network location matters too. AWS advises accessing S3 from compute in the same Region when possible to reduce latency and transfer costs. For users far from an S3 bucket, Transfer Acceleration can route uploads through CloudFront edge locations; whether it helps depends on actual network conditions. AWS describes these options in its S3 performance guidelines and S3 FAQ. Customer-specific improvements in the FAQ are examples, not a speed guarantee for another product.

Is P2P faster or cheaper than S3?

There is no general answer from the architecture alone. A direct P2P route may avoid routing file bytes through an application server, but setup time, network conditions, relay use, file size, and geography affect the outcome. S3 can use parallel parts, retries, regional placement, and acceleration. Without comparable measurements for the same users and workload, neither option can be called faster.

Cost also depends on the whole service, not only the upload path. AWS says internet data transfer into S3 is not charged under the rules described in its support guidance, while some outbound transfer is charged. Storage, requests, outbound volume, acceleration, compute, and a P2P product’s signaling and relay footprint may all contribute. The relevant AWS guidance is Identify data transfer costs in Amazon S3; current prices depend on usage and geography. No comparable P2P-versus-S3 cost figure is established here.

How to decide for a real product

The choice turns on what the product must do and how each path performs under its actual workload. Compare the same transfer sizes, user locations, and network conditions, and account for fallback paths rather than treating the best-case direct route as universal.

  • Persistence: Do users need files stored after transfer or retrievable later? If so, a transfer path alone does not settle the storage requirement.
  • Connectivity and completion: Measure direct-connection success, TURN-relay frequency, and completion rates across the networks users actually use.
  • Performance: Record completion times for representative file sizes and geographies, including setup and retries. Compare P2P with a properly implemented S3 multipart path and, where relevant, acceleration.
  • Total operating cost: Include storage, requests, outbound transfer, compute, signaling, and relay traffic at comparable volumes.
  • Security and recovery: Check authentication, access control, integrity validation, and what happens when a transfer fails or a connection drops.
  • Operational complexity: Account for the services and monitoring needed to coordinate connections, operate relays, and handle cases where peers cannot connect directly.

What would substantiate “why I chose P2P”?

A first-person explanation should be based on the product’s actual design and evidence, not assumptions about P2P. To support that account, the author would need to establish:
