If a Capybara/Selenium test opens chrome://settings/help instead of your application, start by checking the Chrome and ChromeDriver versions the test actually launches. A ChromeDriver update fixed one reported case in 2017, but that anecdote does not establish a universal cause. If the versions are aligned, inspect the selected Capybara driver, Chrome executable, startup arguments, profile, and test environment.
What the About Chrome page tells you
The page at chrome://settings/help is Chrome’s About page. Seeing it during a test is a symptom, not enough information to identify a single cause. Focus on the browser process started by the test, not just the Chrome app you open manually. A test can use another Chrome installation, a different driver, or custom options and profile settings.

- Record the setup: note your operating system, Chrome version, ChromeDriver version,
selenium-webdrivergem version, Capybara version, and configured driver name. - Inspect ChromeDriver’s log: determine the Chrome executable path and startup arguments used in the failing run. ChromeDriver releases are integrated with Chrome for Testing (CfT). Where practical, use corresponding version-paired Chrome and ChromeDriver binaries. Verify Capybara’s driver and Chrome options
Capybara has distinct Selenium registrations: :selenium targets Firefox, while :selenium_chrome and :selenium_chrome_headless target Chrome. Confirm the test selects the intended one, and look for custom driver registrations that may change what a name launches. Capybara driver documentation
Inspect Chrome capabilities and options for unexpected values. They can specify a Chrome binary, command-line arguments, and a custom user-data-dir. ChromeDriver uses a temporary profile by default unless configured otherwise. Reproduce the launch outside the test harness
- Use the Chrome binary path and relevant arguments from the ChromeDriver log.
- Launch that same binary directly from a normal user command prompt, in the same user and environment where possible.
- Compare direct-launch behavior with the test. If the browser works directly but fails under CI, an IDE, service, or container, investigate that harness and its environment.
- If the issue occurs only with a persistent profile, try a fresh temporary profile and inspect startup-page and extension settings. This is a diagnostic step, not a confirmed explanation for every About-page symptom.
On Linux, running Chrome as root is a known startup-crash cause. ChromeDriver’s troubleshooting guidance describes --no-sandbox as an unsupported and highly discouraged workaround; do not treat it as a routine fix. ChromeDriver startup troubleshooting

Use Selenium Manager only after checking your Selenium version
