To diagnose a mismatch, emulate print media, inspect @page size and margins, check header and footer settings, and record the Chrome version and Headless implementation used.
Why a PDF can look different from the browser page
CSS media queries select styles according to the output medium. A page viewed in a regular tab commonly uses screen styles; printing or producing a PDF invokes print-oriented styling. Rules inside @media print can therefore change visibility, layout, colors, and other presentation compared with the screen view.

A PDF is also paged output, not simply a screenshot of a long page. Chrome lays content out in page boxes and fragments it across the pages needed to contain it. Page size, margins, and the way content breaks across page boundaries all affect the result. Chrome and Firefox support @page rules for page size and margins. Chrome’s guide to adding content to printed-page margins discusses this paged-media model and Chrome’s margin behavior.

Inspect the print styles before changing the PDF script
Emulate print media in DevTools
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Open the Rendering panel. If it is not visible, open DevTools’ More tools menu and choose Rendering.
- In the panel’s CSS media emulation control, select
print. - Inspect the page and its computed styles for rules that apply only under
@media print. Compare them with the screen rendering, and look for declarations that hide, resize, reposition, or restyle content.
Chrome documents print-media emulation in the DevTools Rendering panel. This lets you investigate CSS before attributing a difference to Puppeteer itself.

Check page size, margins, and fragmentation
Inspect the document’s @page rules and any print-specific layout styles. Confirm the intended page size and margins, then look at content near page boundaries: a block that fits on screen may be split or moved when Chrome fragments it across sheets. A mismatch at a page edge is not necessarily a media-query failure; it may be a consequence of paged layout.
Account for browser-added headers and footers
Chrome may add automatic page-margin content, such as headers or footers, when there is room. That content can make a PDF appear to have unexpected text or spacing even if the site’s CSS is unchanged. Chrome’s print guidance notes that automatic margin content can be disabled in the print dialog. Its Headless command-line reference also documents --no-pdf-header-footer for disabling PDF headers and footers in CLI use.
Margin behavior has version-specific details: Chrome for Developers’ article published October 30, 2024 identifies margin-box generated content support from Chrome 131. It also describes a caveat in Chromium’s default page layout: if the first page has too little room for automatic header or footer content, it may not appear on later pages even when those pages have room. Do not assume automatic margin content will be consistent across every page without checking the output and browser version.

What Puppeteer does—and what to verify
Puppeteer is an automation interface for Chrome and Firefox, including PDF generation; it does not supply a separate CSS rendering engine. The browser processes the page’s CSS and paged output. A PDF difference should therefore be investigated by checking the media being applied, page layout, browser-added content, and actual browser build used by the automation.
The exact Page.pdf() options and defaults depend on the Puppeteer API version in use. Consult the API documentation for the version installed in your project rather than relying on assumed option names or defaults. The available source material establishes Puppeteer’s PDF capability but does not establish a particular option set.

| Control | What to record or inspect | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Active media type | Whether print or screen styles are active | Different @media rules may alter the page before pagination. |
| Page layout | @page size and margins, plus content near page breaks |
Chrome fragments content into pages, so page geometry changes placement and breaks. |
| Margin content | Whether automatic browser headers and footers are enabled | Browser-generated text and spacing can affect the visible PDF independently of site content. |
| Browser implementation | Chrome version and whether the run uses unified Headless or the old Headless shell | Version and implementation are relevant reproducibility variables; the documentation does not establish that output is identical across them. |
Headless Chrome version history and reproducibility
Chrome’s Headless documentation says Chrome 112 updated Headless to create platform windows without displaying them, with other browser functions available. Since Chrome 132.0.6793.0, the old Headless implementation has been distributed as a separate chrome-headless-shell binary. These milestones make it important to record which browser is actually running; they do not by themselves prove that PDF output is identical between unified Headless, headful Chrome, and the separate shell.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor command-line captures, Chrome documents --print-to-pdf, --no-pdf-header-footer, and --timeout. The timeout bounds how long Chrome waits before capturing output even if page loading continues. These are CLI flags, not Puppeteer option names. See the Headless mode documentation and Headless command-line reference for the relevant modes and flags.
Troubleshooting common PDF differences
Print-only styles are missing or unexpected
Emulate print in DevTools’ Rendering panel and inspect which @media print declarations take effect. If the PDF differs from the screen page, first establish whether the two views are using different media styles.

Content is clipped, shifted, or split across pages
Check @page dimensions and margins, then inspect the page area and content at the affected boundary. Pagination fragments content across sheets; a layout that fits a continuous viewport may not fit a printed page.
Unexpected text or blank space appears in margins
Check whether Chrome’s automatic headers or footers are enabled. In the print dialog, disable them if they are not wanted; with Headless CLI, Chrome documents --no-pdf-header-footer.

A Puppeteer option seems ineffective
Verify the installed Puppeteer version and consult that version’s Page.pdf() API documentation for supported options and defaults. Do not substitute a similarly named Chrome CLI flag for an API option without checking the API reference.

If you need a screenshot rather than a paginated PDF, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL in one GET request and return an image or PDF. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers.
