To mirror an iPhone, use AirPlay—but the Roku model and software must support it, AirPlay must be enabled, and both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network. If AirPlay isn’t available, a compatible iPhone digital AV adapter and HDMI cable can connect the phone directly to the TV, bypassing Roku.
Why doesn’t my iPhone show up in Roku Screen Mirroring?
“Screen mirroring” describes what you want to do, but it does not identify a single connection method. Roku’s separate Screen Mirroring feature is for compatible Android and Windows devices. For Apple devices, Roku directs users to AirPlay instead. So an iPhone may not appear in Roku’s Screen Mirroring menu even though it can mirror to a compatible Roku through AirPlay.

Roku explains the distinction in its guide to displaying media from a phone. Check AirPlay compatibility rather than looking for an iPhone-specific option in the Screen Mirroring menu.

Check the Roku model and software
On the Roku home screen, open Settings > System > About and note the device model and software version. Roku’s AirPlay and HomeKit support page lists compatible Roku TV, streaming player, and audio device models. Support depends on the specific model and software—not just the Roku name or the TV’s appearance.

Roku lists OS 9.4 or later for one group of supported devices and OS 10.0 or later for another. Roku Select and Plus Series TVs are listed as supporting AirPlay and HomeKit regardless of Roku OS version. Consult the current model list on Roku’s support page to determine which requirement applies to your device.
Check the iPhone software
Roku’s published requirement for using AirPlay 2 with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is iOS 12.3 or later. This is the threshold stated in Roku’s support article; check that page for current compatibility information.

How to mirror an iPhone to Roku with AirPlay
- Confirm that your Roku model and software support AirPlay using Roku’s model list.
- Connect the iPhone and Roku to the same Wi-Fi network. To check Roku’s connection, go to Settings > Network > About.
- On Roku, open Settings > Apple AirPlay and HomeKit and set AirPlay to On.
- On the iPhone, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, then select your Roku.
- If a passcode appears on the TV, enter it on the iPhone.
For one video, song, or photo rather than the whole phone screen, use the item’s AirPlay control if the app provides one. In some apps, it is under Share. Apple’s AirPlay instructions explain how to stream or mirror from an iPhone or iPad.

What to check when iPhone AirPlay to Roku fails
- The Roku is missing from the list: Check the exact Roku model and software for AirPlay support first. Then verify that AirPlay is on and both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- The Roku TV or Streambar is in standby: Roku says these devices may not stay connected to Wi-Fi while powered off. Fast TV Start or Fast start can keep the device connected in standby, but uses more power than normal standby.
- AirPlay connects, but a video in one app won’t play: Some video apps do not support AirPlay. Check the app’s AirPlay support or whether the app is available directly on Roku; a failure limited to one app does not necessarily mean AirPlay itself is unavailable.
Which iPhone-to-TV option should I use?
| Option | What it does | Requirement or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| AirPlay screen mirroring | Shows the iPhone screen on the Roku. | Requires a compatible Roku model and software, AirPlay enabled, and both devices on the same Wi-Fi network. |
| In-app AirPlay | Sends supported video, audio, or photos from an app to the Roku. | The app must support and expose AirPlay; this sends selected content rather than mirroring the entire screen. |
| Roku app or app casting | Plays content through Roku when the relevant app supports it. | App availability and casting support vary; this is not full-screen iPhone mirroring. |
| Digital AV adapter and HDMI | Displays the iPhone on the TV over a cable. | Requires an adapter that matches the iPhone connector and an available TV HDMI input. It connects directly to the TV, bypassing Roku. |
Can I connect the iPhone to the TV without AirPlay?
Yes. Apple documents connecting an iPhone to a display with a digital AV adapter that matches the phone’s connector and an HDMI cable. Connect the adapter to the iPhone and the cable to the TV, then select the TV’s corresponding HDMI input. This is a wired TV connection, not a way to add AirPlay support to Roku. Some protected video requires an HDCP-compatible digital connection; see Apple’s Digital AV adapter support guide for adapter and connection details.
