Sigma is Dr. Siebren de Kuiper, an astrophysicist whose attempt to harness gravity went disastrously wrong. A brief black-hole event left him psychologically damaged and able to influence gravity; after years detained as Subject Sigma, he was manipulated by Talon. His story connects directly to a kit built around absorbing, redirecting, and weaponizing force.
Who is Sigma in Overwatch?
Sigma is the name given to Siebren de Kuiper, a celebrated astrophysicist who studied how to harness gravity. Blizzard’s hero page identifies him as a Tank and summarizes his transformation: an experiment gave him the ability to control gravity, after which Talon began using him for its own purposes. Blizzard’s Sigma hero page is the concise official reference for his biography and current ability descriptions.

What happened in Sigma’s black-hole experiment?
De Kuiper conducted most of his research in a laboratory in The Hague. Believing he was close to harnessing gravity, he carried out his defining experiment aboard an international space station. The experiment briefly formed a black hole.
According to Blizzard’s expanded account, de Kuiper was exposed to the phenomenon for only a moment, but suffered serious psychological damage. Gravity around him began fluctuating in time with his reactions, and he had to be evacuated. The story does not establish a clinical diagnosis, so it is more accurate to describe the effects in Blizzard’s terms rather than assign him one.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why is he called Subject Sigma?
After the accident, de Kuiper’s accounts of the universe’s patterns, nonlinear time, and gravitic anomalies led to his detention for years under the name Subject Sigma. Blizzard does not specify the exact length of his detention. The label reflects his confinement and loss of ordinary identity; the story does not present it as a name he chose.
How did Talon get involved?
In Blizzard’s account, Sigma struggles to maintain his connection to reality and is unaware that Talon is manipulating him. Talon exploits his gravity-control powers, turning the once-celebrated scientist into an instrument of its plans. The official story establishes that manipulation, but does not detail every step of how Talon recruited or controlled him.

How do Sigma’s abilities connect to his story?
Blizzard’s hero page lists five abilities. Their shared focus on gravity and control provides a clear gameplay echo of de Kuiper’s transformation. Reading each move as a metaphor for his psychological state, however, is interpretation—not a meaning Blizzard explicitly assigns to the abilities.

| Ability | Official description | Connection to the story |
|---|---|---|
| Hyperspheres | Two charges implode after a short duration and deal area damage. | The paired projectiles make gravity-based force visible as an attack; the biography does not explain them as a specific symbol. |
| Kinetic Grasp | Absorbs projectiles in front of Sigma and converts them into extra health. | It turns incoming force into a resource, an apt gameplay expression of control over forces around him. |
| Accretion | Sigma gathers debris and throws it at an enemy to knock them down. | It shows him assembling and redirecting matter through his power. |
| Experimental Barrier | A floating barrier that Sigma can propel, stop, and recall. | Its movement and recall emphasize deliberate control over space and force. |
| Gravitic Flux | Lifts enemies into the air and slams them back down. | It makes gravity’s pull and release the center of a powerful attack. |
