A browser redesign often changes where a control appears without removing the preference behind it. Start by identifying your browser, device and version, then search its built-in Settings or Preferences for the control’s name or purpose. Menus and rollout timing can differ, so instructions for one browser or version may not match your screen.
Why browsers change familiar controls
Redesigns can regroup related options, make common actions easier to locate, reduce visual clutter or improve consistency, readability and accessibility. A changed screen does not by itself mean a feature has disappeared: its setting may have moved, be hidden or optional, or not yet be available in your version.

Mozilla says Firefox’s settings had become crowded, with related preferences spread across sections and options that were not always easy to find. Its 2026 redesign uses revised navigation, updated labels and more specific categories. Mozilla says it informed the work with interviews, usability testing, card-sorting exercises, usage-data analysis and community feedback; that describes the company’s process, not proof that every user will prefer the result. Mozilla’s explanation of the Firefox settings redesign describes the changes.
Microsoft describes Edge’s visual updates as efforts to improve usability, accessibility, visual consistency and the browsing experience. Its examples include changes to colors, fonts, spacing, readability and toolbar layout. These are the company’s stated goals, not a guarantee that every user will find each change easier.

As an earlier example, Mozilla’s 2021 Firefox refresh framed its work around simplifying menus, clarifying labels and reducing visual clutter. The Firefox design team wrote that it sought “to create unity across the visual language of the browser while setting a foundation for some really interesting things to come.” Mozilla’s 2021 design article gives that context.
How to find a control after a redesign
- Confirm the browser and device. Check whether you are using Firefox, Edge or another browser, and whether it is the desktop program or a mobile app. A desktop path may not apply on a phone.
- Search the browser’s own settings. Open Settings or Preferences and search for the control’s name or what it does. Mozilla specifically recommends Firefox’s settings search for options whose locations have changed.
- Check the most relevant category. Look under headings such as Appearance, Accessibility, Tabs, Privacy or Toolbar. Newer settings pages may split options that were once grouped together.
- Look for customization or visibility choices. A button may be optional, hidden or movable rather than removed. Consult the browser’s current official help page for the specific control.
- Check the version and update status. A screenshot or help instruction may describe a different release. Edge changes can arrive gradually, and available options can depend on version.
- If it is still missing, search official support. Use the control’s name together with your browser, platform and version. This is more reliable than assuming another user’s menu path applies to your installation.
Firefox: settings were regrouped, and the layout is customizable
Mozilla says it retired Firefox’s long-standing General settings page in 2026. Many options moved into more specific areas, including Appearance, Accessibility, Languages, and Tabs and browsing; Mozilla says existing preferences remain. Use the settings search first, or consult Mozilla Support’s Firefox customization and settings topics if you are looking for a toolbar button, Menu bar, theme, page zoom, New Tab option or keyboard shortcut. That page is an index: follow the individual help topic for current instructions rather than treating it as one universal menu path.

Mozilla’s 2026 design description discusses changes to tab shape, component rounding, icons, spacing and color. It also describes attention to contrast, readability, focus states, keyboard behavior, target sizes, system settings and visual comfort. For a denser layout, Mozilla says Compact Mode reduces tab and toolbar size, and an auto-compact option is available for smaller screens. Microsoft Edge: Appearance settings and gradual changes
For Edge on Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft documents this path: Settings and more (…) > Settings > Appearance. Depending on the Edge version, Appearance may include theme, toolbar layout and buttons, font size, and page zoom. Microsoft notes that options can differ or be unavailable by version; its Edge appearance instructions are the relevant reference for the documented path.

Microsoft also says visual updates roll out gradually, so Edge users may see changes at different times. If your screen differs from a screenshot or an instruction, check that Edge is current and review Appearance settings before concluding that a control has been removed.

Menu paths are version- and platform-specific, and the clearest documented examples here are Firefox and Edge. If a setting search and the browser’s relevant help topic do not resolve the mismatch, verify the exact browser version and search the vendor’s official support site for that version. Do not apply a path from another browser or device as though it were universal.
