Why B2B SaaS Pages Feel Slow—and How to Improve INP

Poor INP is a symptom, not a universal SaaS problem. Use field data and interaction traces to find the delay, fix its cause, and validate the change with real users.

A poor Interaction to Next Paint (INP) score means users are waiting too long to see the page respond after an interaction. The fix is not to apply generic performance tips to every site: use real-user field data to find the slow interaction, trace whether the delay comes from input queuing, event handling, or rendering, and address that measured bottleneck.

What Core Web Vitals measure now

Google’s Core Web Vitals cover three parts of page experience: loading, responsiveness, and visual stability. INP is the current responsiveness metric; it replaced First Input Delay (FID) on March 12, 2024. Google’s announcement explains the change.

Metric What it measures Good threshold
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) Loading performance 2.5 seconds or less
Interaction to Next Paint (INP) Responsiveness to user interactions 200 milliseconds or less
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) Visual stability 0.1 or less

Google assesses Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile of page views. For INP, assess mobile and desktop separately: a combined score can conceal a problem affecting one group. INP is good at or below 200 milliseconds, needs improvement above 200 and below 500 milliseconds, and is poor above 500 milliseconds. These are the current thresholds in Google’s INP documentation.

Why a SaaS site can feel slow after it loads

INP covers qualifying interactions over a page visit, rather than measuring only the first click. A page may load quickly and still feel unresponsive when a user opens a menu, changes a filter, submits a form, or interacts with another control. INP reflects the slowest qualifying interaction, with some outlier handling, so one particularly sluggish interaction can matter.

An interaction can be delayed at three points: the browser may be busy before it processes the input; the input’s event handlers may take too long; or the browser may need too much work to render the resulting visual update. Google identifies several factors worth investigating, including excessive main-thread JavaScript, large DOMs, layout thrashing, complex CSS selectors, and client-side rendering. These are possible causes, not a diagnosis of every B2B SaaS site. Without measurements from a particular site, it is not possible to say which one is responsible.

How to find slow interactions in the field

Start with field data: it tells you whether users are experiencing poor responsiveness under real conditions. A local performance trace can help explain a reproduced issue, but it does not establish how fast the site is for users. Google’s field diagnosis guide describes using CrUX and interaction attribution to locate and investigate slow interactions.

  1. Check field status. Review PageSpeed Insights, CrUX data, or your real-user monitoring for INP, and look at the affected device segment and page grouping when available. Confirm whether the concern is mobile, desktop, or both.
  2. Identify the interaction. Use interaction attribution with the web-vitals library and diagnostic detail to connect a slow result with a page, element, and interaction. The field guide also covers the Long Animation Frames API as a source of diagnostic information.
  3. Reproduce and profile. Record a browser performance trace while repeating the troublesome action. Inspect the time before the input is processed, the event-handler work, and the rendering that follows. Treat the trace as an explanation of that test, not as a substitute for field performance.
  4. Compare the trace with the field symptom. Check that the page, interaction, and device conditions you reproduced plausibly match the reported issue. If they do not, gather more diagnostic detail rather than assuming the first trace explains the field result.

Choose a fix that matches the measured bottleneck

Where the time is spent What to investigate Possible response
Before input processing (input delay) What is occupying the main thread when the user interacts? Remove unnecessary JavaScript and reduce competing main-thread work; split long tasks so the browser can return to input sooner.
During event handling Which handlers or computations take the most time? Reduce unnecessary handler work, break up long tasks, and move suitable computation to a web worker.
After the handler (rendering delay) What DOM updates, layout, style, or paint work follows the interaction? Reduce expensive DOM and rendering work; avoid layout thrashing and costly updates.

These are targeted options, not a checklist to apply indiscriminately. A worker can help with suitable computation, but it is not a general replacement for reducing unnecessary work or improving rendering. Google’s INP optimization guidance covers strategies for improving responsiveness.

Validate the result with field data

After changing the code, recheck field INP at the 75th percentile for mobile and desktop separately. Allow representative usage and enough field data for the result to reflect the change. A faster lab trace is useful evidence that a particular test improved; by itself, it does not prove that real-user INP improved. Also check the interaction you targeted so that an improved page-level result does not obscure a still-slow control.
