To give an AI agent current web data, expose search as an explicitly configured retrieval tool, have the agent inspect the returned sources, and keep citations attached to the claims it uses. A prompt asking for current information is not enough: the application must enable a search capability and preserve its evidence through the answer.
How does live web retrieval fit into an AI agent?
A model’s stored knowledge cannot reliably answer questions about events or releases that happened after its training information. For example, current stock prices and a newly shipped software release require current information; Amazon’s AgentCore documentation uses examples like these to explain the need for retrieval.

Design retrieval as a data tool: it supplies information the workflow needs. Keep it distinct from action tools, which change systems or send messages, and orchestration tools, which delegate work among agents. OpenAI’s practical guide to building agents describes these three tool categories and recommends standardized, reusable tool definitions.
- Receive the user’s request and determine whether it depends on current external information.
- Search or fetch information using a retrieval tool with a clear purpose and input schema.
- Inspect relevant source passages and their dates.
- Synthesize an answer while keeping citations connected to the claims they support.
- Use a separate action tool only if the task calls for an external change, subject to the application’s authorization rules.
This is an architectural pattern, not a measured performance result. The main benefit is separation of responsibilities: finding evidence does not itself authorize an agent to act.

How do I enable web search for an agent?
Configure search in the API or agent’s tool settings, not just in its instructions. OpenAI’s Agents API web search documentation demonstrates the tool in live mode and states: “If you leave web_search out of agent.tools, built-in web search is off.” A prompt can tell an agent when to search, but it cannot enable a tool that the application has not provided.
In that OpenAI interface, live accesses the live internet, cached uses saved web content, and disabled turns search off. Optional controls include context size, allowed domains, and location. These settings let an application tailor retrieval to a task; choose the mode and constraints deliberately rather than assuming every search is live or unrestricted.

Define a useful retrieval tool contract before connecting it to the model. Specify when the tool is appropriate, what query or filters it accepts, and what evidence it returns. A practical normalized record can include a URL, title, publication date or page age when available, retrieved passage, and provider citation data. Preserve original provider values as well as normalized fields so citations and source context are not lost.

| Option | What the documentation describes | Evidence and controls noted | Fit to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Responses API | Hosted web_search for new Responses API implementations; the model can decide whether to search. The docs distinguish non-reasoning search, agentic search managed by reasoning models, and extended deep research. |
Source annotations include URLs and citation locations. See OpenAI web search. | Consider when the application already uses the Responses API and wants its hosted search flow. |
| OpenAI Agents API | Built-in web search can run in live, cached, or disabled mode. |
Optional context-size, allowed-domain, and location controls. See OpenAI web search. | Consider when the agent is built with this API and needs those search-mode controls. |
| Google Gemini grounding with Google Search | Connects Gemini to real-time web content; Google’s documentation says it works with all available languages. | Returns citations to verifiable sources. The documentation includes Python, JavaScript, and Java examples. See Google Search grounding. | Consider when the application uses Gemini and wants its documented grounding integration. |
| Anthropic Claude web search | Anthropic documents web-search tools for Claude. | Citation results can include source URL, title, cited text, and page age. Availability and tool versions vary by API host and platform; consult the current availability section for the deployment. | Consider when the application uses Claude, after confirming the tool is available on the intended host and platform. |
| Amazon Bedrock AgentCore search connector | A managed, MCP-compliant search connector for AgentCore Gateway, usable through MCP-compatible clients. | Results can include titles, URLs, snippets, and publication dates; documented controls include domain and date filtering and semantic passage extraction. See AWS web search documentation. | Consider when the application uses AgentCore or an MCP-compatible environment and wants a managed connector. |
Choose based on the model and API you already use, the evidence format your application can preserve, available controls, and the operational work you want to own. A custom integration may require handling credentials, quotas, rate limits, parsing, and service configuration; AWS describes these as parts of building custom integrations. The cited vendor pages do not establish which option is best across providers.
How can an AI agent search the web and cite sources?
Keep the retrieved source identity and passage connected to each claim throughout synthesis. OpenAI documents URL-citation annotations with source URLs and locations in the response. Google documents grounding metadata with citations. Anthropic documents citation locations that carry the URL, title, and cited text, and advises including citations when displaying API outputs to end users. AWS returns URLs and snippets with search results.
Render citations as visible, clickable links near the claims they support. Before presenting a material claim, check that its cited passage actually supports it and that the source is current enough for that claim. A citation’s presence does not establish that every sentence is supported or that the claim is correct.
- Check the cited passage, not only the search-result title or snippet.
- Inspect publication date or page-age metadata when available, especially for fast-changing facts.
- Prefer an official primary source when one is available and relevant.
- If sources conflict, preserve the disagreement and their dates instead of silently blending them.
- Mark details that remain unsupported or uncertain rather than presenting them as settled facts.
Provider result structures differ, so normalize fields your application needs while retaining original citation data. That lets the interface present sources consistently without discarding provider-specific locations or text.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I choose controls and check freshness?
Start with the kinds of questions users ask, then check whether the integration can retrieve suitable current sources and return enough evidence to validate an answer. Compare these practical dimensions:
- Freshness and coverage: Does the tool access live information, and does its source set cover the likely questions?
- Controls: Can you restrict domains, dates, location, or context size when the task requires it?
- Evidence returned: Do results include useful passages, titles, URLs, dates or page age, and citation text or offsets?
- Integration fit: Does the option work with your model API, SDK, framework, or MCP environment?
- Operational responsibility: Who manages credentials, quotas, rate limits, parsing, and configuration?
For time-sensitive questions, choose a live mode where available and inspect the source’s recency metadata rather than treating retrieval as proof of freshness. AWS describes its own web index as spanning “tens of billions of documents,” refreshed on an ongoing basis, with changed content reflected “within minutes.” Those are AWS’s descriptions of its service, not an independent audit or a comparison with other providers.
