The right choice depends less on a universal “easiest” label than on where you store backups, how you prefer to operate the software, and whether you can recover the necessary keys and credentials if the server fails.
What these tools do—and what they do not establish
Borg, restic, Kopia, and Duplicati are plausible options for backing up files and directories from a self-hosted system. Their official documentation describes features and workflows, not a like-for-like test of speed, reliability, or ease of use. There is no evidence here to rank them as a tested winner.

File backup is not automatically a complete disaster-recovery plan. The available documentation does not establish that any of these tools provides application-consistent database backups, virtual-machine image recovery, or bare-metal restoration for every setup. Treat those as separate requirements and plan for them explicitly.

How the four backup tools differ
| Tool | Documented interface and destinations | Recovery details | Best fit to investigate |
|---|---|---|---|
| BorgBackup (Borg) | Command-oriented; supports remote hosts accessible over SSH. Its documentation describes deduplication, optional compression, and authenticated encryption. Borg documentation | Archives can be mounted as filesystems for browsing and recovery. | Someone comfortable with command-line work who wants to use an SSH-accessible remote host. |
| restic | Command-oriented and documented for Linux, BSD, macOS, and Windows. The project describes local, self-hosted, and online storage options and a single-executable model without a separate server. restic project restic manual | The manual covers encrypted repositories, backup, restore, and repository-check commands. | Someone who prefers a command-line workflow and needs to check support for a particular storage backend. |
| Kopia | Offers both CLI and GUI use; its documentation describes encrypted snapshots in local, network, or cloud repositories, with user-controlled end-to-end encryption. Kopia features Kopia repositories | You can mount a snapshot to browse it, restore a whole snapshot to a chosen location, or selectively restore files. | Someone looking for documented GUI and CLI options plus several snapshot recovery routes. |
| Duplicati | Documents UI-based configuration for source data, destination, schedule, retention, and encryption, as well as CLI use and multiple destination backends. Duplicati setup Duplicati destinations | Direct recovery can use destination details and the encryption passphrase if the original local database is unavailable. Losing the passphrase makes recovery impossible. Duplicati restore guide | Someone who wants to investigate a documented UI setup and can securely preserve the passphrase and destination credentials. |
These are documented capabilities, not independent findings about how easy or reliable each tool will be in your environment. In particular, Kopia marks Rclone support as experimental and says not all Rclone-supported providers have been tested; do not assume that every provider reachable through Rclone will work with Kopia.

It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Choose based on how you will restore
Before settling on a tool, imagine the server is gone and you need one file—or an entire set of files—back. Then check which recovery route the tool documents and what you would need to perform it from another machine.
- Want a GUI option? Kopia documents both a GUI and CLI, while Duplicati documents UI and CLI workflows.
- Prefer command-line operations? Borg and restic are presented through command-oriented documentation; Kopia and Duplicati also document CLI use.
- Need to retrieve individual files? Kopia documents selective restore and snapshot browsing by mount. Borg documents mounting archives as filesystems. Check the official restore instructions for your intended workflow.
- Need recovery without the original server’s local database? Duplicati documents a direct-restore route using destination details and the passphrase. That still depends on retaining the information required to access and decrypt the backup.
Match the destination to your actual storage
“Self-hosted” does not mean backups must stay on the same machine or even in the same location. The tools document different combinations of local, network, SSH, and cloud destinations. Confirm the specific backend and setup you intend to use rather than relying on a broad claim of cloud or remote support.

- NAS or mounted network storage: Check that the chosen tool documents the precise way you will connect to the NAS, and test access using the account and permissions the backup job will use.
- SSH-accessible remote host: Borg documents remote hosts accessible over SSH. Confirm that you can authenticate to the host and access the repository from the system that will perform backups.
- Local or removable drive: Duplicati documents file destinations including a fixed disk, removable media, or mounted network storage; restic and Kopia also document local storage options. An external hard drive for local backups can provide a removable copy, but a drive kept alongside the server does not by itself provide an off-site backup.
- Cloud or another remote storage service: Read the selected tool’s destination documentation for the exact provider and connection method. Kopia’s experimental Rclone support is not evidence of universal compatibility with every Rclone-supported service.
Protect the information that makes recovery possible
Encrypted backups are useful only if you can retrieve the required secret when the original server is unavailable. Keep encryption passwords or keys and destination credentials somewhere independent of the machine being backed up. Duplicati explicitly warns that a lost encryption passphrase makes restore impossible. Kopia describes a user-controlled repository password that is not sent outside the machine, so plan how you will retain and retrieve that password yourself.

Make backup maintenance part of the plan
A scheduled job reporting success does not prove you can recover files. Restic’s manual documents repository-check commands, and each tool’s restore documentation can help you build a practical recovery procedure. Verify the repository using the tool’s documented checks, then practice restoring representative files to a separate location.
- Choose a small set of files that would matter if lost, and identify the snapshot or backup containing them.
- Follow the tool’s documented restore procedure and recover them somewhere other than their original location.
- Open the recovered files and confirm they are usable, not merely present.
- Record the destination details, access method, and any encryption secret required for recovery in a secure place independent of the server.
For databases, virtual machines, or full-server recovery, create and test a separate plan appropriate to those workloads; the file-backup capabilities described here do not establish that those cases are covered.

Which one should you investigate first?
If a GUI is important, start by reviewing Kopia and Duplicati’s documented interfaces and restore paths. If you are comfortable with command-line workflows, compare restic and Borg against your destination and recovery requirements. This is a feature-based starting point, not a claim that one tool is universally easier, faster, or more reliable.
