A sighting also depends on darkness, clear skies, a view toward the poleward horizon, and whether the display is bright enough to stand out against local light.
What an aurora forecast actually predicts
Forecasts describe auroral conditions, not the complete conditions at your address. NOAA’s 30-minute aurora forecast estimates viewing probability from auroral intensity. Its tonight and tomorrow night viewline uses the three-day geomagnetic forecast as an input to the OVATION model. Neither product tells you whether your local sky is clear or dark.

These products also cover different time horizons and use different inputs, so check which one you are viewing and what period it describes. NOAA’s Aurora Tutorial says, “By measuring the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field upstream of Earth it is possible to forecast the aurora quite accurately but with a short lead time of 15-45 minutes.” That lead-time statement describes the short-term forecasting approach; it is not a guarantee for every forecast product or a promise of a local sighting.

It is not fully dark
NOAA states that aurora is not visible during daylight. Twilight and other ambient light can also make a faint display harder to pick out.

Clouds block the view
A geomagnetic forecast does not predict whether clouds will cover your location. Check a local weather forecast separately; even active aurora is hidden behind an overcast sky.
The display is too far north or too faint
Aurora may be visible only low on the northern horizon rather than overhead. NOAA notes that at low Kp, aurora can be far north, dim, and inactive. Buildings, trees, or terrain can block a low display, so an open view toward the poleward horizon matters.

Lights and moonlight reduce contrast
City lights and moonlight can make faint aurora harder to distinguish from the sky. NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information lists both among factors that affect viewing in its guide to chasing the northern lights.
The aurora changes while you wait
Auroral brightness, position, and activity shift over time. A map is not a precise appointment for when the display will be overhead—or visible from one particular spot. NOAA says viewing is often best around local midnight, but that is a general window, not a fixed time to expect a sighting.

How to interpret Kp and viewlines
Kp summarizes planetary geomagnetic activity. It helps indicate how far aurora might extend from polar regions, but it is not a personal visibility score: it does not account for your cloud cover, darkness, or nearby lights. NOAA describes latitude limits associated with Kp as approximate; aurora may appear near the poleward horizon instead of directly overhead. A Kp value therefore cannot establish that the lights will be visible from a particular town.
When reading a map, note its forecast time and product. The 30-minute forecast and tonight/tomorrow viewline differ in horizon and method. Neither replaces a local cloud check or tells you whether conditions at your specific viewing spot are suitable.

How to improve your chances of seeing the lights
- Identify the forecast and time period. Check the current NOAA forecast and confirm whether it is the 30-minute product or the tonight/tomorrow viewline.
- Check local cloud cover. A favorable aurora map cannot overcome clouds at your location.
- Wait for full darkness. Daylight rules out a sighting, and twilight makes faint aurora harder to see.
- Choose a darker, open spot. Move away from bright local lights when it is safe and practical, and find an unobstructed view toward the poleward horizon.
- Recheck near your viewing time. Short-term forecasts and the display itself can change; use updated guidance rather than relying on an earlier map.
- Give your eyes time to adjust. If you take a photo, a phone camera may capture faint color or structure that is difficult to see unaided, as NASA’s Kelly Korreck noted in an Associated Press report. A camera can help document a faint display, but it cannot make cloudy or bright skies suitable for viewing.
