To verify an exchange deposit or withdrawal, copy its transaction ID (TxID or transaction hash) from the exchange’s transaction history, open an explorer for the exact network used, and search the ID. Compare the on-chain status and transfer details with the exchange record. An explorer can confirm what the public ledger shows; it cannot confirm that an exchange has finished processing or crediting the transfer.
1. Find the transaction ID in your exchange account
Open the exchange’s transaction or order history and select the specific deposit or withdrawal. Copy the identifier labeled TxID, transaction hash, or transaction ID. Coinbase documents opening a transaction and choosing “View on block explorer”; Binance describes opening the transaction record and following its TxID link. See Coinbase’s explanation of transaction hashes and Binance’s transaction-status instructions.

Also note the asset, network, amount, date and time, and the relevant sending or receiving address shown in the exchange record. These details give you a way to check that the explorer result belongs to the transfer you intended to verify.

Check the network named in the exchange record before searching. A transaction identifier is meaningful on the chain where the transfer was made; do not assume an explorer for a different network will show the same transaction. Coinbase advises using the correct blockchain explorer for the cryptocurrency. A block explorer is a searchable interface to public ledger data; Etherscan’s overview describes searching a transaction hash and viewing details such as status, sender, recipient, and value.

Some services support several networks, but you still need to select the one matching the exchange record. If the exchange provides a “View on block explorer” link, it can be a convenient starting point; check that its network matches the transaction details.
3. Search the TxID and compare the record
- Paste the full TxID into the explorer’s search field and open the matching transaction result.
- Check the status. Note whether the explorer reports the transaction as pending, included in a block, or confirmed. The wording and fields vary by chain and explorer.
- Match the transfer details. Compare the asset or token, amount, sender, recipient, and time with the exchange record. Coinbase notes that transaction details can include an address, amount, date and time, network fee, and confirmations.
- Keep the explorer link. If the details do not match or you need support, retain the exchange transaction record and the explorer URL for the specific result.
For Bitcoin, inspect the transaction’s inputs and outputs as well as its status and confirmation count. Inputs and outputs show how the transaction moves coins, but not every output is necessarily the intended recipient: the sender may receive change. Blockstream’s guide explains how to look up a Bitcoin transaction and read its mempool or confirmation status, inputs, outputs, and fee information: How to look up a Bitcoin transaction.

For Ethereum and other EVM-style transfers, check the correct chain and inspect token-transfer information when the asset is a token. The top-level transaction destination alone may not identify the token recipient or amount. Explorer layouts differ, so use the fields provided for that chain rather than expecting every explorer to display the same information.

4. Understand pending, confirmed, and finality indicators
Pending versus included
For Bitcoin, a pending transaction is generally one broadcast to the network but not yet included in a block; a transaction included in a block has at least one confirmation, and additional blocks increase its confirmation count. A Bitcoin Core REST lookup also has an important limitation: its transaction endpoint searches the mempool by default and returns 404 when it does not find a transaction; querying confirmed transactions through that endpoint requires the transaction index to be enabled. Consequently, absence from a particular lookup endpoint alone does not prove that an exchange never initiated the transaction. See the Bitcoin Core REST documentation.

Ethereum chain-state labels
Ethereum execution APIs distinguish the tags pending, latest, safe, and finalized. In the API documentation, latest means the latest canonical-chain block observed by a client and may be reorganized; safe and finalized express stronger chain-state assumptions. The documentation describes finalized as the most recent crypto-economically secure block, not expected to be reorganized absent manual community intervention. These are technical chain-state terms, not guarantees about an exchange’s deposit policy. See the Ethereum Execution APIs documentation.
Why there is no universal confirmation count
Do not treat a particular confirmation count as universally sufficient, or compare raw counts across networks as though they represented equal settlement risk. Required thresholds depend on the receiving platform and network; Binance notes that minimum Bitcoin confirmation requirements can change. Check the receiving exchange’s current deposit requirements for the exact asset and network.

5. If the explorer and exchange disagree
The explorer shows the transfer, but the deposit is not credited
A public-chain record establishes what the explorer can see on that network. It does not establish that the receiving exchange has completed its own checks or crediting workflow. Open the receiving platform’s deposit history and check the transaction status and current requirements for that asset and network. If the on-chain details match but the deposit remains uncredited, contact the platform’s support with the TxID and explorer link.

Review the transaction record and its current status with the sending exchange. Binance advises contacting the platform or sender for a new TxID if the supplied identifier is unavailable. Confirm that you copied the full identifier and selected the right network before drawing conclusions from a failed search; a lookup endpoint may also have limitations, as Bitcoin Core’s REST documentation illustrates.
The network, recipient, or asset appears wrong
Do not rely on an exchange status badge if the public record’s network or transfer details differ from the exchange record. Preserve both records and contact the relevant platform’s support. An explorer displays ledger information; it cannot change or reverse a transfer.
