If game audio is drowning out friends, open the Xbox guide’s Audio & music controls and move Headset chat mixer toward chat. Use Headset volume when all headset audio is too quiet, and adjust Mic monitoring only to change how much of your own voice you hear.
What each Xbox headset setting changes
Xbox describes these controls in its headset setup guidance. They do different jobs: one balances game and chat, one changes overall loudness, and one feeds your voice back to you.

How to make party chat louder than game audio
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then select the Audio & music icon.
- Move Headset chat mixer toward chat a little at a time. Stop when voices are clear and game audio remains comfortable; the far-right extreme mutes game audio.
- If chat and game audio are both too quiet, adjust Headset volume rather than pushing the mixer to an extreme.

What to do if chat is still unclear or a control is unavailable
- Check the headset’s physical mute switch and volume dial, if it has them.
- If other players cannot hear you, do not treat Mic monitoring as a microphone-gain fix: it controls what you hear locally, not the transmitted voice level.
- If the mixer or other controls are unavailable, or the microphone still does not work, use the applicable Xbox headset or party troubleshooting flow. Xbox support pages for these issues are available, but their instructions could not be confirmed here, so no exact troubleshooting path is stated.
Does the headset connection matter?
For Xbox Series X|S, Xbox says all controllers have a 3.5 mm jack, and wired headphones with a 3.5 mm plug can connect to them. That is an option if your existing headset is missing or incompatible, not the first fix for chat that is simply out of balance. The cited information does not establish compatibility for specific wireless headsets.
