Asian Games cricket uses T20 rules: each team can bat for up to 20 overs. The short format makes cricket easier to schedule within a multi-sport event, although the International Cricket Council (ICC) sources available do not state that this was the organizers’ official reason for choosing it.
What T20 rules mean at the Asian Games
In T20 cricket, each side has up to 20 overs to score runs. An over consists of six legal deliveries, so a team that uses all its overs faces up to 120 legal balls. The match ends sooner if its innings is completed before then. The format’s name describes the overs available to each side, not a guaranteed match length.

The ICC describes T20 Internationals as cricket’s shortest international format and says a match usually takes about three hours. The actual duration can vary. ICC: The three formats of the game

Why T20 fits a multi-sport schedule
A T20 match’s usual duration makes it more practical to include in a Games program than a Test match, which is played over five days. That is a reasonable scheduling explanation for using the shorter format at a multi-sport event—not a confirmed statement of the Asian Games organizers’ rationale. The sources do not establish a single official reason for the choice.

How T20 compares with other cricket formats
| Format | Overs or innings | Typical duration |
|---|---|---|
| T20 International | Up to 20 overs per side | Usually about three hours, according to the ICC |
| One Day International (ODI) | Up to 50 overs per side | Not stated in the cited ICC format summary |
| Test | Two innings per side | Played over five days |
The ICC identifies T20, ODI and Test cricket as the sport’s three international formats. The shorter innings and usual duration are what make T20 distinct from the longer alternatives. ICC: The three formats of the game
How T20 became an international format
Twenty20 cricket began in English county cricket in 2003. Women’s T20 Internationals followed in 2004; men’s T20 Internationals began in 2005, when the ICC adopted T20 as cricket’s third official format. The ICC says the format brought new audiences and encouraged new skills and innovations. ICC: History of cricket in the 21st century

Cricket’s place at the Asian Games
Cricket first appeared at the Asian Games in 2010. In its guide published on 22 September 2026, the ICC describes the Nagoya Games as cricket’s fourth appearance in the last five editions to include the sport. That is tournament history, separate from the rules of T20 itself. ICC: Asian Games cricket—All you need to know

These are arrangements for that edition, not permanent T20 rules; tournament formats and qualification can change.
