Keep the higher rate only if it feels worthwhile in your games and does not cause unwanted battery drain or performance problems. There is no single best polling rate for every wireless mouse, PC, connection mode, and player.
What a mouse polling rate changes
Polling rate, also called report rate, is how often a mouse sends position and button updates to the computer. A higher rate means shorter nominal intervals between reports; it does not guarantee an equally large reduction in total click-to-screen or end-to-end latency.

| Polling rate | Nominal interval between reports |
|---|---|
| 125 Hz | 8 ms |
| 250 Hz | 4 ms |
| 500 Hz | 2 ms |
| 1000 Hz | 1 ms |
| 2000 Hz | 0.5 ms |
| 4000 Hz | 0.25 ms |
| 8000 Hz | 0.125 ms |
Logitech describes 125 Hz as one update every 8 milliseconds and 1000 Hz as one every 1 millisecond. The other intervals in the table are arithmetic conversions from the rates, not measurements of full system latency. Razer describes 8000 Hz as eight times the reports per second of 1000 Hz, with nominal intervals of 0.125 ms and 1 ms; that is Razer’s technical description, not an independent test result. Logitech’s polling-rate guide and Razer’s HyperPolling technical page explain the concepts.
DPI is a separate control: it affects cursor speed or distance moved for physical mouse movement, while polling rate affects how often updates are sent. Leave DPI and in-game sensitivity unchanged while comparing rates so you can judge the polling-rate change rather than several changes at once.

How to choose a rate for your setup
- Check which rates your mouse supports in the mode you use. Look in the manufacturer’s software or documentation, and check whether the options change between 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth, and wired operation. Do not assume every advertised rate is available in every connection mode.
- Use 500 Hz and 1000 Hz as a starting comparison. Logitech describes 500 Hz as a serious-gaming setting and 1000 Hz or above as more oriented toward competitive or high-end setups, while noting that faster settings mainly benefit competitive players with high-refresh monitors. These are Logitech recommendations, not a universal guarantee. Logitech’s guide recommends testing on your own hardware.
- Keep the comparison controlled. Use the same mouse connection, DPI, sensitivity, game, and aim task at each rate. Judge whether movement feels smoother or more responsive in the games you actually play; a larger number alone does not establish a noticeable improvement.
- Try higher rates only if the mouse offers them. If 1000 Hz feels good and your games remain stable, test 2000, 4000, or 8000 Hz where available. Keep a higher setting only if you value the result enough to accept its potential battery or performance costs.
- Reduce the rate if performance suffers. Logitech says some users may see FPS drops above 1 kHz, possibly because of additional USB traffic, and suggests lowering the rate or trying another game. If you notice a problem, compare at a lower rate in the same game and conditions. Logitech’s FPS guidance addresses this issue.
- Choose a lower rate when runtime matters more. Higher rates may use more battery on wireless devices, although the exact effect depends on the mouse and use. For the G304/G305, Logitech documents a 125 Hz endurance mode and performance-mode options from 125 to 1000 Hz. The company recommends performance mode for gaming and endurance mode for other profiles or apps when using multiple profiles; these directions apply to that model family, not all wireless mice. Logitech’s G304/G305 instructions describe those modes.
Why mouse model and wireless mode matter
Available rates and setup requirements vary by mouse. ASUS’s ROG Harpe II Ace FAQ, last updated 2026-01-28, lists 125, 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, and 8000 Hz. ASUS says device settings are available through Gear Link when the mouse is connected over 2.4 GHz wireless or wired mode. That example does not establish that the same rates—or the same software requirements—apply to other mice or to Bluetooth operation. Check the documentation for your exact model and current connection. ASUS’s ROG Harpe II Ace FAQ lists its options and conditions.
If your current mouse has a suitable adjustable rate, there is no need to replace it just to chase a higher maximum. If it lacks the controls you want, look for documentation that confirms the rates you need are supported in your intended connection mode; ASUS’s model is one documented example of a mouse with settings through 8000 Hz, not an endorsement or proof that the maximum benefits every setup.

How to verify the selected rate
A browser-based polling test is not always authoritative. Logitech warns that online tools may show lower or fluctuating readings because Logitech G mice can dynamically vary report rate to save battery and browsers may not process high rates correctly. Logitech names standalone MouseTester as a possible way to validate maximum rate for its devices, and advises contacting support if the selected setting appears faulty. Check the manufacturer’s documentation and model-specific behavior before treating a browser result as proof that a mouse is defective or incapable. Logitech’s polling-rate test guidance explains these caveats.

There is no universal published threshold in these manufacturer sources for when most players stop noticing improvement. Logitech and Razer’s technical descriptions explain report frequency and product guidance; they do not prove that every player will perceive a benefit at a particular rate. The practical choice is the highest setting that works reliably for your mouse, connection, games, and priorities—not automatically the maximum printed on the box.
