MacBook Neo Alternatives: Budget Laptops to Consider in 2026

The best MacBook Neo alternative depends on the apps you need, your preferred operating system, and the actual price of the configuration you can buy.

The best MacBook Neo alternative depends first on which operating system your apps and school or work require. For Windows, RTINGS names the Dell XPS 13 (2026) for shoppers who qualify for student pricing and the ASUS Vivobook 16 M1605 as an under-$600 option without that eligibility. For ChromeOS, it recommends the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024), but its cited $700 base MSRP means the value depends on finding a sale. These are useful starting points, not a universal ranking: compare the exact configuration and checkout price before choosing.

What you are comparing against: MacBook Neo

Apple announced the MacBook Neo in March 2026. In the base configuration described by Apple, it has an A18 Pro chip, 8GB of unified memory, a 256GB SSD, and a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with 2408 × 1506 resolution and 500 nits of brightness. It has two USB-C ports with different USB speeds; external display support is on the USB 3 port. Apple lists Silver, Blush, Citrus, and Indigo finishes. Check Apple’s MacBook Neo page for the configuration and price available in your region.

The fixed 8GB of memory is an important limit to consider. RTINGS says it is adequate for typical schoolwork and light multitasking on macOS, but cautions that 8GB can constrain heavier multitasking in Windows 11. Its review describes the Neo as suitable for general computing, browsing, streaming, word processing, and very light creative work; it points readers doing intensive workloads toward more capable alternatives. Which MacBook Neo alternative fits your needs?

What matters most Candidate What the cited source says Important qualification
Portable Windows laptop; you qualify for student pricing Dell XPS 13 (2026) RTINGS lists it as a Windows alternative around $599 with eligible student pricing and describes it as portable with strong battery life. The cited price depends on student eligibility. Verify the offer, model configuration, and price at checkout.
Windows laptop without a student-pricing requirement ASUS Vivobook 16 M1605 RTINGS names it its top under-$600 pick, citing a $599 price that does not require special pricing. That is a dated price reference, not a guaranteed live offer. Check the exact listing and compare its portability and display with the Neo.
ChromeOS Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024) RTINGS names it its best Chromebook under $600 and highlights a compact design, day-long battery life, FHD+ display, and 1440p webcam. RTINGS gives its base MSRP as $700. It is often on sale, but is not reliably below $600 at list price.
Newly announced Windows laptop with a 14-inch OLED screen HP OmniBook 5 (14-inch, 2026) Tom’s Hardware reports a $699.99 starting price and 14-inch 1920 × 1200 OLED configurations. The report scheduled some configurations for November 2026 or March 2027. Confirm that the configuration you want has shipped and is available; the reported starting price is above the Neo’s historic US launch price.

Price references in the table are attributed, dated figures—not current sale quotes. RTINGS’ 2026 guide lists the ASUS at $599 and the Acer’s base MSRP at $700; Tom’s Hardware reports the HP starting at $699.99. Prices, stock, configurations, and education offers vary by region and can change. Sources: RTINGS’ under-$600 laptop guide and Tom’s Hardware’s HP OmniBook 5 report.

How to choose between them

Start with the operating system and required apps

Make a shortlist of the applications and services you actually need, then check their operating-system requirements. A Windows-only workflow or a school that manages devices through ChromeOS can matter more than a general review recommendation. If your everyday work already depends on macOS, moving to another operating system may add friction even when a laptop looks attractive on price.

Compare real checkout prices

Check the price for the exact configuration you would buy, including whether you qualify for an education offer. Keep temporary sale prices separate from regular pricing, and do not assume a price mentioned in a review is still available. The Acer is a particularly clear example: its cited $700 base MSRP makes it an under-$600 choice only when a sufficiently deep sale is available.

Rank #2
HP 14" HD Chromebook Laptop for Students, Intel Quad-Core N4120(> N4020), 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi, Webcam, HDMI, USB-A&C, 14 Hours Battery Life, Zoom, Chrome OS, CUE Accessories
  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

Check memory and storage in the exact listing

Compare the RAM and SSD in each specific configuration rather than relying on a model family name. An 8GB Windows laptop should not be assumed to have the same practical headroom as the Neo’s 8GB unified memory: RTINGS specifically warns that 8GB can constrain heavier Windows 11 multitasking. Storage capacity also affects how much room you have for apps and files.

Match performance to your workload

For documents, browsing, video, and ordinary school tasks, several of these operating-system options may be suitable. Frequent video editing, software development, or heavy multitasking calls for a more capable configuration than the Neo review recommends for intensive workloads. That can mean spending more; do not choose a low-cost model on the assumption that every configuration handles demanding work equally well.

Compare the details you use every day

Look at the exact laptop’s weight and dimensions, screen, ports, keyboard, webcam, and battery information. Battery-life figures need context: Apple says its comparative performance tests used preproduction Neo systems and production Intel Core Ultra 5-based PCs in January and February 2026, with specified software and system configurations. Its battery tests used preproduction systems in January 2026 under disclosed brightness and usage conditions. These are Apple’s own results, not independent tests, and battery life varies with use and configuration. Prefer independent standardized results when comparing models, and avoid treating figures from different test methods as directly equivalent.

What benchmark figures can—and cannot—tell you

Tom’s Guide reports SSD read/write speeds of 1,585/1,440 MB/s for its tested Neo, 3,018/3,456 MB/s for its tested Dell, and 6,701/6,891 MB/s for its tested ASUS. Those figures describe particular tested configurations and are most relevant to large file transfers; they are not a complete measure of laptop quality or proof that one model is better for every task. See Tom’s Guide’s comparison.

  • Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam

There is no neutral, comprehensive common benchmark ranking established for all the laptops named here. RTINGS’ picks are useful for narrowing options by operating system and price, but different reviewers’ measurements and recommendations should not be merged into a single score.
