Why arXiv Submissions Are Delayed or Rate-Limited—and What Authors Can Do

arXiv delays can stem from technical processing, moderator review, or announcement timing. Learn how to distinguish the stages and respond to an explicit rate-limit message.

An arXiv submission can take time to appear because technical processing, moderator review, and public announcement are separate stages. A moderation hold is part of arXiv’s workflow, not by itself evidence of a rule violation. If the system explicitly reports a rate limit, the evidence available here does not establish a universal threshold or cooldown; follow the message and current arXiv guidance rather than guessing.

Why is my arXiv submission delayed?

There is more than one step between submitting a paper and seeing it publicly announced. arXiv’s editorial and user support team curates submissions for moderation and technical standards. Its 2023 annual report says higher paper-to-moderator ratios increased both the number and length of moderator holds. A hold is therefore a real part of the process, but the report does not identify the reason for any individual hold or promise a processing time. arXiv Annual Report 2023

Workload figures help explain why delays can occur, but they are historical—not a live measure of today’s queue. arXiv reported 208,493 new submissions in 2023, including 20,710 in October, which was a monthly record at that time. The report also recorded 205 moderators and 30,000 user-support tickets that year. arXiv Annual Report 2023

Technical validation or compilation

A submission may encounter technical issues before or during processing. arXiv’s 2022 annual report identifies TeX compilation errors as a technical-support topic. Read the submission system’s validation or compilation feedback and address errors it flags; the report does not provide a complete current troubleshooting checklist. arXiv Annual Report 2022

Moderator review

A moderation hold is distinct from a technical error and does not, on its own, mean the submission has been rejected or that the author has violated a rule. arXiv’s 2023 report connects longer and more frequent holds with high paper-to-moderator ratios, but does not give a standard wait time or a method authors can use to shorten a hold. arXiv Annual Report 2023

Waiting for an announcement

Processing and public announcement are not the same event. arXiv reported announcing papers five days a week for nearly all of 2023, with some breaks, and 690 to 1,035 new papers on announcement days. A submission received after a batch cutoff may wait for a later announcement opportunity even if it is not on a moderation hold. These figures describe 2023; the cited report does not establish current cutoff times. arXiv Annual Report 2023

Does arXiv rate-limit submissions?

The available official material does not establish a current numerical rate-limit threshold, what triggers an individual restriction, how long one lasts, or a guaranteed release procedure. Do not infer a rate limit from elapsed time alone: first check the status and any exact system message. If the interface explicitly says an action or account is rate-limited, preserve the wording and consult current arXiv submission guidance or support for that specific case. The guidance page is an official entry point; no threshold or cooldown is established here.

How to work out what stage is causing the delay

What you see What it may indicate What to do
Validation or compilation feedback identifies an error A technical issue, such as a TeX compilation problem Review the system’s feedback, correct identified errors, and follow the current interface instructions. arXiv’s 2022 report lists compilation problems among technical-support requests. Source
The status indicates a moderator hold Editorial or moderation review; the hold alone does not establish a violation or rejection Check the status information and contact support if the reason remains unclear. The 2023 report documents holds but does not specify a standard duration. Source
The submission is processed but not yet publicly listed It may be waiting for a scheduled announcement Check the current announcement guidance and calendar. The 2023 report describes a weekday cadence with occasional breaks, but not current cutoff times. Source
An explicit message says the action is rate-limited A restriction is being reported, but its trigger and duration are not established by the annual reports Keep the exact message and ask arXiv support or consult current official guidance; do not guess at thresholds or attempt a workaround.

Not every delay will make its cause clear in the status display. Elapsed time by itself is not enough to distinguish a hold, a technical problem, announcement scheduling, or a restriction.

What authors can do next

  1. Check the submission’s current status. Distinguish receipt and technical processing from moderator review and public announcement rather than treating every wait as the same problem.
  2. Read the validation and compilation feedback. Correct the errors identified by the system, including compilation issues, and follow the instructions shown in the current submission interface. arXiv’s 2022 report identifies TeX compilation errors as a support category.
  3. Check announcement timing. Allow for the possibility that processing is complete but the next announcement opportunity has not arrived. Confirm current timing directly with arXiv; the 2023 report’s cadence does not supply today’s cutoff times. Annual Report 2023
  4. Contact the appropriate support channel if the status remains unclear. arXiv’s 2022 report describes technical questions and moderation-support requests such as status inquiries and appeals. Include the paper identifier or submission details and the exact system message so support can assess the issue. The report does not establish a response-time promise. Annual Report 2022
  5. For an explicit rate-limit notice, quote it accurately. Preserve the message and use current official guidance or support for the case. Do not assume a threshold, cooldown, or bypass method that arXiv’s published reports do not specify.
