U.S. carriers offer several distinct advertising and marketing programs, not one universal “AI” switch. AT&T explicitly says its Personalized and Personalized Plus programs use automated decision-making such as artificial intelligence. T-Mobile describes audience grouping, modeling, and scoring for advertising, but the reviewed disclosures do not explicitly label those processes AI. Verizon describes interest-based advertising technologies, not an explicit AI system for personalized offers. To limit a particular use, sign in to your carrier’s privacy dashboard, turn off the relevant offer or ad-personalization program, and review separate controls for CPNI marketing, sale or sharing, and marketing contacts. Those opt-outs generally limit specified uses; they do not promise zero ads or eliminate data processing needed to provide service.

What “AI-personalized offers” means at a phone company

Carriers may use customer information to select or tailor ads and offers, but they disclose different programs and data practices. An “AI” label is not established for every carrier: AT&T uses that term in its program comparison, while T-Mobile describes grouping and modeling without explicitly calling those processes AI in the reviewed passages. Verizon’s reviewed advertising guidance focuses on interest-based advertising technologies.

Keep the control categories separate. Ad personalization, CPNI-based marketing, “Do Not Sell or Share” preferences, and contact preferences for calls, texts, email, or mail can have different settings and scopes. A device advertising-ID setting or industry opt-out is another, narrower layer.

What the major carriers disclose

Carrier What is disclosed What to check
AT&T Personalized is automatically enrolled; Personalized Plus requires opt-in. The Privacy Notice says both use automated decision-making “such as artificial intelligence.” Both may use AT&T product and service use, including app data, third-party demographic information, and advertising-partner data. Personalized Plus may also use precise location, CPNI, and web-browsing information collected by AT&T as an internet provider. The programs do not use medical-condition or financial-account information and do not access the contents of texts, emails, or calls. AT&T Privacy Notice Review both Personalized and Personalized Plus in AT&T Privacy Choices. If enrolled in Personalized Plus, opt out of both programs to stop participation in both; Plus enrollment includes the basic program and overrides a prior basic-program opt-out. Personalized Plus Terms
T-Mobile The notice describes analysis of app use, purchases, browsing activity, precise location, and CPNI for its opt-in Tailored Offers and Ads program. It describes forming interest groups, such as frequent travelers, and using grouping, modeling, or scoring in advertising and analytics. The older Personalized Ads and Offers program is no longer available to turn on; Tailored Offers and Ads is the newer opt-in program. The reviewed passages do not explicitly call these processes AI. T-Mobile Privacy Notice Use the current dashboard labels to turn off Relevant Ads and any currently enabled opt-in offer program. Separately review “Do Not Sell or Share,” which has a different scope. T-Mobile ad-program instructions · Do Not Sell or Share
Verizon Verizon describes interest-based ads using cookies, similar technologies, and mobile operating-system advertising identifiers. It says activity across websites, apps, and devices may be combined to identify audiences an advertiser wants to reach. The reviewed guidance does not explicitly describe an AI system for personalized offers. Verizon About Our Ads Review Verizon’s current account privacy choices and advertising options. Verizon also points to Digital Advertising Alliance and device advertising-identifier controls, but those do not establish that every carrier-side account use is disabled.

How to limit carrier ad personalization

  1. Sign in to the right account. Open your carrier’s official privacy dashboard or Choices and Controls page. If you manage multiple lines, accounts, or brands, check each one that may have its own preference.
  2. Turn off the relevant offer or advertising program. At AT&T, check both Personalized and Personalized Plus if you enrolled in Plus. At T-Mobile, use the current dashboard labels for Relevant Ads and any opt-in offer program enabled on your account; program names and availability have changed. At Verizon, use its account privacy dashboard and current advertising choices.
  3. Review CPNI marketing and sale/share separately. These are not interchangeable with an ad-personalization toggle. At T-Mobile, “Do Not Sell or Share” limits certain targeted-advertising sharing as defined by applicable law, but service-provider disclosures and ads based solely on visits to T-Mobile sites are outside that definition. Additional opt-in sharing programs may have their own toggles. T-Mobile explains the scope and controls.
  4. Set marketing contact preferences if you want fewer direct solicitations. Email, text, calls, and mail preferences address contact channels, not necessarily the selection of ads shown online or in an app.
  5. Use device and industry controls for cross-company ad tracking. Verizon points customers to the Digital Advertising Alliance and device settings such as “Limit Ad Tracking” or “Opt out of Interest-Based Ads.” These controls target participating advertising companies or device identifiers; they do not necessarily govern a carrier’s use of account data.
  6. Confirm the settings remain in place. T-Mobile says logged-in preferences are associated with a cookie, separate brands need separate account settings, and clearing cookies, app data, or local storage can affect preferences. It also participates in Global Privacy Control for browser-level Do Not Sell or Share requests. Recheck the dashboard after changing devices, clearing stored data, or switching accounts.

Carrier-specific details that can change the outcome

AT&T: Personalized and Personalized Plus

AT&T says customers can leave either program at any time and that nonparticipation does not affect service. Personalized Plus enrollment includes the basic Personalized program and overrides a prior opt-out of that basic program, so a customer seeking to stop both should opt out of both. The Personalized Plus terms describe the program relationship.

AT&T treats CPNI marketing as a separate setting. It defines CPNI as information related to purchased telecom services, such as a subscription plan and details about whom a customer called. The notice provides an online opt-out and phone routes: (800) 315-8303 for automated prompts or (800) 288-2020 for consumer service. Restricting CPNI marketing does not affect service, but other AT&T marketing may still arrive. AT&T Privacy Notice

Browser cookie controls and the Digital Advertising Alliance opt-out address participating ad companies and browser-based tracking. AT&T says ISP-observed browsing used for Personalized Plus is managed through its own privacy choices and operates independently of browser cookie or private-browsing settings.

T-Mobile: check current program names and separate sharing controls

T-Mobile’s privacy notice says the older Personalized Ads and Offers program is no longer available to turn on and identifies Tailored Offers and Ads as the newer opt-in program. The education page gives instructions for Relevant Ads and Personalized Ads and Offers; it says turning off Relevant Ads also turns off Personalized Ads and Offers if that older program had been enabled. Because the notice reflects a program change, follow the current dashboard labels and disable any currently enabled opt-in offer program that applies to your account, rather than assuming an older toggle name is still available. T-Mobile says opting out of Relevant Ads can leave ads in place; the change is that they are not tailored to interests. The separate Do Not Sell or Share preference is tied to logged-in settings and cookies, and separate brands require separate account settings. It may also be necessary to turn off additional toggles for opt-in sharing programs.

What an opt-out does—and does not—mean

  • It can limit a defined use or sharing category. Read the carrier’s description of the exact program and control rather than assuming one switch covers every marketing activity.
  • It does not mean no ads. T-Mobile explicitly says ads may continue after its Relevant Ads opt-out, but they will not be tailored to interests.
  • It does not stop service operations or every legally permitted data use. Ad choices are not a general ban on processing needed to provide service or on disclosures outside the control’s stated scope.
  • It does not necessarily stop direct marketing contact. Adjust contact preferences separately if the goal is fewer calls, texts, emails, or mail.
  • It does not prove that all location handling is disabled. For historical context, the FCC announced on April 29, 2024, that it fined AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon nearly $200 million over illegal sharing of access to customer location data. That enforcement action is not proof that current ad-personalization programs share location unlawfully, nor that an advertising opt-out covers all location practices. FCC announcement
