You can strengthen your PlayStation account without buying new hardware: set up a passkey or two-step verification, use a unique password if you keep password sign-in, and prepare recovery options before you need them. The best setup depends on which devices you use and whether you can still reach your registered phone, authenticator app, and account email.

Choose a sign-in setup that fits your devices

PlayStation offers three useful layers: a passkey can replace password sign-in, two-step verification (2SV) adds a code to password sign-in, and a unique password reduces the risk that a password exposed on another service will also unlock your PlayStation account. Sony does not publish a comparative security score for these options, so there is no official percentage or ranking to apply.

Method How sign-in works What to check
Passkey Use a device screen lock, such as biometrics or a PIN, instead of typing your PlayStation password. A passkey may be available on other devices using the same synced passkey or password manager. Check support for your devices and prepare to use Sony’s email or QR-code fallback if the passkey is unavailable. PlayStation’s passkey guide
Password plus 2SV Enter your password and then a unique code sent by SMS or generated by an authenticator app. Keep access to the registered verification method, and save the one-time backup codes. PlayStation’s 2SV recovery guide
Unique password Continue signing in with a password, but do not reuse one from another service. Make sure you can access the email address associated with the account to reset the password if necessary. PlayStation’s password guide

These are not all mutually exclusive account safeguards, but the checkout password setting has a specific limitation: Sony says it is not compatible with an account using passkeys. Decide whether that purchase control matters to you before enabling passkey sign-in.

Set up a passkey

A passkey replaces typing a password on supported PlayStation devices and services. PlayStation describes it as a way to sign in using biometrics such as a fingerprint or face scan, or a screen-lock PIN. Setup does not require a new console or a separate security key.

From Account Management

  1. Open Account Management and go to Security.
  2. Select Sign in with Passkey, then Create a Passkey.
  3. Follow the prompts on your device. Sony says setup triggers an email confirmation.

From a PS5

  1. Open Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security.
  2. Select Sign in with Passkey and follow the prompts. The console may show a QR code to continue setup on your phone.

Sony may update menu labels or placement, and regional pages or device interfaces can differ. Its current US support guidance lists passkey sign-in on PS5, PS4, the PlayStation website, PlayStation App, and Remote Play for Mac. It says most mobile devices running iOS 16 or later and Android 9 or later support passkeys; for web sign-in, Sony recommends a current version of Safari, Chrome, or Edge. See Sony’s passkey compatibility and setup guidance for the latest details.

Check compatibility and keep a fallback

  • Sony cautions against using an Android PIN code as a passkey.
  • Some hardware security keys may cause problems. A separate key is not required to set up a passkey.
  • Sony documents issues involving Remote Play on Mac, outdated browsers, and some Android and Windows device combinations.
  • If a passkey is unavailable at sign-in, select Can’t Sign In with Passkey and use the offered email or QR-code fallback.

You can add or remove passkeys through Account Management > Security > Manage Passkeys. To return to password sign-in, disable passkey sign-in and create a password. Review PlayStation’s passkey instructions if the available options differ on your device.

Enable two-step verification and prepare recovery

With 2SV enabled, signing in requires your password and a unique verification code, delivered by SMS or generated in an authenticator app. The code adds a check to password sign-in; it cannot help if someone also controls the verification or recovery channel tied to your account. Enable 2SV in your account security settings using Sony’s two-step verification instructions.

Save your backup codes

Sony says it provides 10 backup codes, and each code can be used once. Keep them somewhere you can reach if your phone is lost or unavailable, but not somewhere that depends on the same lost device. If you need one during sign-in, choose Trouble Receiving Code? > Sign In Using a Backup Code. Follow Sony’s 2SV recovery steps for current prompts.

Use a unique password if you sign in with one

Do not reuse a password from another service. Reuse means a password exposed elsewhere could also put your PlayStation account at risk. A password manager can help you keep distinct passwords without having to memorize each one; Sony also recommends password managers and passkeys as ways to reduce the burden of remembering multiple complex passwords. See PlayStation’s security best practices.

Change or reset your password

  1. To recover access, go to Account Management > Trouble Signing In? > Recover Your Account.
  2. Open the secure link Sony sends to the account email and follow it to create a replacement password.

Sony’s password guidance gives a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters as an example. Use a password that is unique to PlayStation, then store it in a password manager if you use one. For the current recovery flow, see How to change or reset your password for PlayStation.

Protect the account when using consoles and shared devices

Sign-in security is only one part of account protection. Sony’s practical advice also covers access to the console, purchases, and attempts to trick you into handing over account information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Do not share your account details. PlayStation Support states: “Never share your account details with anyone else.”
  • Ignore suspicious reward QR codes. Do not scan codes from people promising free vouchers, gift cards, in-game items, or other rewards.
  • Avoid signing in on public or shared devices. If you must use a shared console, sign out afterward. Sony also documents remote sign-out.
  • Set a console login passcode. This helps restrict access to your user profile on the console.
  • Consider Require Password at Checkout. It can help prevent unauthorized purchases, but Sony says this setting is not compatible with an account using passkeys.

For the account-level and console recommendations, see PlayStation’s security best practices.
