Samsung’s emoji are not objectively ugly. They are Samsung’s own artwork, built on deliberate choices in facial proportion, expression, color, lighting and shading. Some people find that style expressive and charming, and others find it exaggerated or childish. “Ugly” is a verdict of taste. The complaints usually trace back to a few specific design decisions, plus a technical fact most people never see: the same emoji character can be drawn differently on each platform.
Why the same emoji looks different on different phones
Unicode standardizes emoji as encoded characters and sequences, so a message sent from one platform arrives as the same character on another. The standard does not dictate the picture. Each vendor or app draws the glyph from its own font. Samsung says it designs its own emoji suite, so a Samsung phone shows its own version of a face that Google, Apple or another platform draws differently. A complaint about Samsung emoji is therefore a complaint about one vendor’s artwork, not about emoji as a whole.

The design choices behind Samsung’s style
The clearest public explanation of Samsung’s approach is a 2015 article in the Samsung Global Newsroom about its emoji suite at that time. It describes the designers’ intent, not a current specification, and the sections below use it on that basis.
More detail and emphasis
UX designer Erin Jung said: “We place a great amount of focus on the actual design of the emojis to add a sense of fun to Samsung’s devices.” She described one method: “One way we do that is by increasing the volume of the details. The smiling face, for example, may have larger eyes while the anxious-looking face might have a larger bead of sweat.” Enlarged features help a very small icon carry emotion at a glance. The same choice can read as expressive to one viewer and exaggerated to another.

- Practical Design for Secure Grip: Textured side panels and a non-slip matte back provide a confident hold during sweaty gym workouts, one-handed texting, and fast-paced daily commutes. The fingerprint-resistant finish stays clean, and soft-touch buttons deliver crisp, responsive feedback.
- All-Scenario Versatility: The minimalist, low-profile matte design blends effortlessly into any environment, from business commutes to weekend hikes. It pairs rugged durability with everyday pocketability for heavy-duty protection without the bulk.
Consistent lighting across the set
Jung also explained the need for a unified look: “To eliminate the visual discomfort that can occur when two-dimensional and three-dimensional designs are placed next to one another, we unify the angles and directions of light, composition and shading for each emoji so that they can easily be browsed by users.” The 2015 article gives a design area of 108 by 108 pixels for that workflow. That figure describes the process Samsung discussed then, not the dimensions of every current emoji asset.
One design for many ages and cultures
UX designer July Baek said the team tests designs so that “the emojis can be understood by all, regardless of nationality or age, while adhering to the global standards. Also, we have to keep up with current design trends.” Boeun Song described the balance required for animals: “In the case of animals, the design cannot simply be cute or realistic.” The goal, Song said, was to “strike a fine balance between the two so that the final Samsung emoji designs will be admired as widely as possible.” These are statements of intent at publication, not independent evidence that the designs are widely liked.

Why some people find the art unappealing
No measured single cause of dislike has been established. The design choices Samsung describes do, however, point to where taste can diverge:
- Facial proportions and expression. Enlarged eyes or a bigger sweat drop can look lively to one person and overdone to another.
- Color, shading and perspective. A unified light source keeps a set coherent. Whether that reads as polished or stiff is a matter of preference.
- The cute-versus-realistic middle ground. Samsung’s designers aimed between the two. Viewers who prefer one extreme may find that compromise unappealing.
- Familiarity. A style someone grew up with, often Apple’s or Google’s, becomes the default against which any other set looks wrong.
Samsung itself acknowledges that emoji are not always interpreted alike, so a reaction to an icon may reflect the viewer’s expectations as much as the artwork.

When rendering differences change the message
Visual differences matter beyond taste. A 2018 study by H. Miller Hillberg et al., published in the Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction, asked participants about cross-platform renderings. In that sample, 40% said some renderings did not convey the same message, and 2% said none did. The authors’ adjusted estimate was that 17.7% of emoji-bearing tweets would have been edited or not sent as-is if authors could see the rendering differences. These figures describe that study’s participants and period. They do not measure current Samsung users.

| Item | Detail as reported |
|---|---|
| Software version | One UI 8.5 |
| New emoji | 133, drawn from Unicode Emoji 17.0 recommendations |
| Revised designs named | White Flower, Pizza, Bank, Cyclone, Ship and Moon Face |
| First appearance | Galaxy S26 series, February 25, 2026 |

| Expected recipients | Galaxy S25 and S24 series, and selected Z Fold and Z Flip models, subject to regional variation and carrier approval |
Because the artwork changed between versions, a complaint about one firmware build may not describe the emoji on another.
Apps can also draw emoji from outside Samsung’s set. Emojipedia reports that apps including Gboard and X have used Google’s Noto Color Emoji through Android font fallback, so some newer emoji can appear in an app before the system font is updated.

A Samsung Members Community post dated July 16, 2025, reports Noto Color Emoji appearing in certain WebView-based areas during the One UI 8.0 beta. The post, whose title is “One UI 8.0부터 폰트 및 이모지에 문제가 생겼습니다” (“There have been font and emoji problems since One UI 8.0”), is one user’s account of beta behavior. The poster’s explanation is speculation, and the post does not show that every One UI app behaves this way.
Quick Recap
How to check whether a complaint applies to your phone
- Note your phone model, region and carrier. Carrier approval affects when an update reaches a device.
- Open Settings, tap About phone, then tap Software information, and note the One UI version.
- Open the same emoji in the app where it looks wrong and in a Samsung system app such as Messages. If the two differ, that app is probably supplying its own glyph rather than the system font.
- Compare your One UI version with the list above. A design listed for one Galaxy model may not yet be on yours, because rollout varies by model, market and carrier.
What the evidence does and does not establish
- Samsung’s public design explanation dates to 2015 and describes the suite of that period. The 2026 changelog is a specialist publication, not a current Samsung statement of design intent.
- No representative current survey measuring dislike of Samsung emoji was found, so claims that most people dislike them are not supported.
- No controlled, head-to-head test of Samsung, Apple and Google emoji sets was found. Any comparison should be made feature by feature: facial proportions, color and shading, legibility at small size, and consistency across keyboard, apps and operating-system versions. Preferences should be attributed to the individual who holds them.
- Do not attribute a negative reaction to a specific update, and do not assume every Samsung app uses the same emoji font.
