When apps crash on a Samsung phone, the cause is usually one of five things: a fault or compatibility problem in the app itself, outdated app or phone software, an unstable connection, low available storage, or a conflict with a third-party app you downloaded. The fix is usually a short sequence of low-risk steps, working from the smallest action to the largest. Start with a restart and updates, move to force stop and cache clearing for a single app, and keep data clearing, factory reset, and service visits for problems that remain after those steps.
What usually causes crashes on a Samsung phone
Official Android Help and Samsung Support both describe crashes in similar terms. Their troubleshooting pages use phrases such as “Crashing,” “Won’t open,” and “Won’t respond” to describe the symptom. The possible causes they name include the following. None of them is a diagnosis of a specific Galaxy model.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- An app-specific fault or compatibility problem. The app may have a bug, or it may not be fully supported on your Android or One UI version.
- Outdated app or device software. A pending app update or a Galaxy software update can fix a known problem.
- Unstable connectivity. Samsung’s regional support guidance names unstable internet as a contributor, particularly for apps that load content from the web.
- Low available storage. Google’s Android Help notes that low available storage can contribute to phone problems in general.
- A conflict with a downloaded third-party app. A recently installed or updated app can interfere with others, which is why Safe Mode is a useful test (covered below).
Start with the reversible steps
Begin with these three checks. They take a few minutes, change nothing you would lose, and resolve a large share of one-off crashes.
- Restart the phone. Hold the Side key and choose Restart from the power menu, then open the app again.
- Update the affected app. Open Google Play or Galaxy Store, search for the app, and tap Update if the button is shown.
- Check for a Galaxy software update. Open Settings, go to Software update, and tap Download and install if an update is available. Menu labels vary by One UI version and model, so follow the wording on your screen.
If the crash stops after any of these steps, you do not need the steps below.

If one app keeps crashing
When only one app is affected, work through the following sequence. Each step is more disruptive than the one before it.
- Force stop the app. Open Settings, go to Apps, select the app, and tap Force stop if it is available. This ends its running processes without removing any data.
- Check compatibility. In the app’s listing in Google Play or Galaxy Store, confirm the app supports your phone and Android version. If it does not, an update may be needed, or the app may not work on your device.
- Clear the cache. In the same app screen, open Storage and tap Clear cache. This removes temporary files. It does not remove your sign-in or saved settings.
- Clear data only if necessary. Tap Clear storage or Clear data in the same Storage screen. This resets the app to its factory-default settings and removes personal settings and data saved in that app. You may need to sign in again, and some app-specific information may be lost. Samsung’s guidance also notes that the wording and location of these options depend on the software version and the app.
- Reinstall or contact the developer. Uninstalling an app can erase its saved data, and Google warns that reinstalling a problematic downloaded app may bring the same crash back. If the problem continues, contact the app’s developer and include your phone model, Android or One UI version, and the app version.
| Action | Scope | What it removes | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart the phone | Whole phone | Running processes only | None to your data |
| Update the app or phone software | One app or whole phone | Nothing | Low |
| Force stop | One app | Nothing; ends running processes | None to your data |
| Clear cache | One app | Temporary files | Low; the app may load more slowly the next time you open it |
| Clear data (storage) | One app | App settings, saved data, and often your sign-in | High for that app’s data |
| Uninstall and reinstall | One app | The app and, in many cases, its saved data | High for that app’s data |
| Factory reset | Whole phone | All data on the phone | Highest; back up first |
Samsung’s support pages make a related point about caches. Clearing the cache of every app at once is possible only through a factory reset, but clearing each app’s cache individually is available in the app’s Storage screen.

If several apps or the whole phone is affected
If many apps crash, or the phone itself slows down or restarts unexpectedly, the cause is more likely to be system-wide. Work through these steps in order.
- Check available storage. Open Settings, then Battery and device care or Device care, and review storage. Remove large files or unused apps if space is tight.
- Close background apps and restart. Close apps you are not using, then restart the phone.
- Update device software. Install any pending Galaxy software update, as described earlier.
- Run Samsung’s diagnostics if available. Samsung recommends its Device Care memory tools and Samsung Members Phone diagnostics. Phone diagnostics is available only on Galaxy devices with the Samsung Members app installed.
- Test in Safe Mode. Use Safe Mode to see whether a downloaded app is responsible (see the next section).
Use Safe Mode to test for a third-party conflict
Safe Mode starts the phone with only its built-in apps, so downloaded apps are temporarily disabled. In Samsung’s current US support guide, you open the power menu, touch and hold Power off, and then select Safe mode. The exact steps can vary by model and software version.

- If the crashes stop in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is the likely cause. Restart normally, then uninstall recently added or updated third-party apps one at a time. Restart or check the phone after each removal so you can identify the app that triggers the problem.
- If the crashes continue in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is unlikely to be the cause. Samsung states that hardware may be involved and recommends contacting a service center.
When a factory reset makes sense
Google’s Android Help states that a factory data reset removes all data from the phone. Use it only after the app-level steps, storage checks, updates, and Safe Mode testing have failed to fix a persistent, system-wide problem. Before you start:
- Back up photos, messages, documents, and any app data you cannot replace.
- Note your Google account and any other account passwords you will need after the reset.
- Keep the phone charged, and confirm the backup is complete before you begin.
When to stop troubleshooting and get service
Stop troubleshooting and contact Samsung support or a service center if any of the following applies: the crashes continue in Safe Mode, the phone restarts or freezes even when no apps are open, or the problem returns after a factory reset. These patterns can point to hardware, and a technician can test the device directly. If you contact support, mention the Android and One UI version, your phone model, what you tried, and whether the crashes occurred in Safe Mode.
