Most often, Puppeteer takes the screenshot before the page’s used web fonts finish loading. After navigation, wait for document.fonts.ready before calling page.screenshot(). If the font is still wrong, check font requests, CSS declarations, glyph coverage, and the browser’s operating environment instead of adding an arbitrary delay.
Wait for fonts before taking the screenshot
A navigation milestone and a font-readiness check answer different questions. Puppeteer’s networkidle0 and networkidle2 are network-connection conditions: they mean there have been no more than zero or two network connections, respectively, for at least 500 ms. Neither directly confirms that a particular typeface has been applied and laid out. Puppeteer’s lifecycle event definitions describe those conditions.

Use the navigation condition appropriate to the site, then await the page’s font set:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteawait page.goto(url, {waitUntil: 'networkidle2'});
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({path: 'page.png'});
Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows navigation with networkidle2 before capture. The additional document.fonts.ready wait addresses fonts: it resolves after loading and layout operations for fonts used by the document have finished. See MDN’s documentation for the Document.fonts property.

This promise is not a guarantee that every declared font has loaded. Browsers can defer fetching a declared face until the page needs it, and unused faces may remain unloaded. Nor does readiness prove that the chosen face contains every character the page needs.
Diagnose what is still wrong
1. Check the font and stylesheet requests
Use the browser’s network diagnostics to look for failed, blocked, or unexpected font-file and stylesheet requests. Confirm that the request URL is correct and that the server returns the intended file. Then inspect the page’s @font-face rule and font-family declarations to ensure the loaded face is actually selected. The CSS Font Loading API documentation explains that fonts are resources fetched when needed.

- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
2. Inspect font loading status and errors
While debugging, inspect document.fonts.status and enumerate the document’s font faces and their statuses. The CSS Font Loading API also provides loading, loadingdone, and loadingerror events. These can help distinguish a timing issue from a failed resource or incorrect declaration. A resolved document.fonts.ready covers fonts used by the page, not every font declared in its stylesheets.

3. Check glyph coverage and fallback behavior
If only some letters, symbols, or scripts appear wrong, the selected typeface may not include those glyphs. Check that the intended font covers the affected characters and that the CSS fallback stack includes a suitable alternative. Font readiness alone does not establish glyph coverage.

4. Compare browser and host environment
Record the Puppeteer version, browser version and mode, operating system, and available fonts when comparing a working run with a failing one. Keep the URL and CSS constant, then check whether font requests succeeded and whether document.fonts.ready resolved. This helps separate a race condition from a resource or environment difference.
Puppeteer’s current documentation, version 25.12.0 at the time reflected by the cited pages, says Puppeteer v20 and later downloads Chrome for Testing; the older headless mode is a separate chrome-headless-shell option. Browser pairings can change, so verify the supported browser guidance against the versions installed in your project.

Linux container checks
When screenshots run in a Linux container, a font problem may come from missing browser dependencies or absent font files rather than screenshot timing. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide suggests using ldd chrome to find missing shared libraries and notes that some language-rendering setups need additional font files. Install the fonts required for the page’s scripts and verify the browser dependencies in the same container that performs the capture.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot without managing Puppeteer’s browser environment, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; its cookie and consent handling removes known banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can also use its MCP server tools to take screenshots.
For example, with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options, including output formats and capture settings. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

Common troubleshooting outcomes
- Screenshot shows a fallback font, but the request failed: Fix the font URL, server response, access restrictions, or stylesheet declaration, then capture again.
- Font requests succeed, but the screenshot is inconsistent: Await
document.fonts.readyafter navigation and before the screenshot; do not rely on a network-idle condition alone. - Only particular characters look wrong: Verify that the selected face covers those glyphs and that an appropriate fallback is available.
- It works locally but not in a Linux container: Check browser dependencies with
ldd chromeand install the required font files for the page’s languages or scripts. - Behavior changed after an upgrade: Record and verify the Puppeteer and browser versions and mode against Puppeteer’s supported-browser documentation.
Performance and reliability considerations
Waiting on document.fonts.ready is more targeted than sleeping for a fixed number of milliseconds: it waits for used-font loading and the associated layout work rather than assuming how long they take. It cannot repair a blocked request, a bad CSS rule, missing glyphs, or an incomplete container font set. For repeatable comparisons, hold the page URL and CSS constant and record request outcomes, font readiness, browser versions, and host environment. The cited documentation does not quantify how frequently any one cause occurs.
