To compare website screenshots in a useful change report, capture the same page and interface state before and after a change under closely matched conditions. Show the approved baseline, the new capture, and a side-by-side or diff view; then record whether each meaningful difference is intentional, a defect, or inconclusive. A pixel diff finds visual changes—it cannot decide whether they are correct.
1. Choose and identify the baseline
A screenshot comparison is meaningful only in relation to a chosen reference. In a Playwright Test workflow, the first run creates a reference screenshot; review it as the intended design, then commit or otherwise manage it as the approved baseline. Later runs compare new captures against that reference. See Playwright’s visual comparison documentation.

Give each comparison a traceable identity: the page or component, route or test name, and relevant build or commit. If the reference changes, make that an explicit reviewed update rather than silently replacing it with the latest output.
Record the state, not just the URL
For an interactive page, the same URL can produce different images depending on its state. Capture the same relevant state on both runs—for example, the same dialog, selected tab, or expanded menu—and include its name in the report. Record the route or test that produced it.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
2. Capture the new state under comparable conditions
Keep the capture setup as close to the baseline as practical. Browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends using the same environment that generated the baseline to improve consistency.
- Match browser and browser version, operating system, and headless settings where possible.
- Match viewport dimensions and device pixel ratio (DPR).
- Keep fonts and assets available and loaded in the same way.
- Capture the same route, page or component, and interaction state.
Chromatic documents that its snapshots use device pixel ratio 2.0 beginning with Capture 9; it also explains that DPR 2 and DPR 1 captures compare as changed even when the layout is otherwise identical. Snapshots that exceed browser image-dimension limits can fall back to DPR 1.0. Those are Chromatic-specific documented behaviors and may change. If DPR differs between your reference and new image, treat it first as a capture-condition mismatch, not evidence of a product change. See Chromatic’s snapshot documentation.

3. Make the difference easy to inspect
Present the approved baseline and the new capture together. A side-by-side view preserves context; an overlay or highlighted diff can help locate changed regions. Label which image is which, and link each to the page, component, or test that produced it. Chromatic documents a side-by-side view with changes highlighted in its Diff Inspector documentation.

Include any masks, pixel thresholds, or sensitivity settings that affect what the comparison reports. Playwright supports a maximum differing-pixel setting for screenshot assertions, while Chromatic documents customizable diff sensitivity. A threshold is a noise-control setting, not a judgment of design quality: inspect the affected area so that tolerated variation does not hide a real layout or content change. See Playwright’s screenshot assertion options and Chromatic’s visual testing documentation.

4. Write the report so someone else can review it
A useful visual change report lets a reviewer understand what was captured, under what conditions, and what decision followed. Include:
- Subject: page, component, route or test name, and the interface state.
- Provenance: baseline and new capture, identified by build, commit, or other available version information.
- Capture conditions: browser, operating system, viewport, and DPR; note any mismatch rather than implying the captures are equivalent.
- Comparison: side-by-side images and, where useful, an overlay or highlighted diff.
- Comparison settings: masks, thresholds, or sensitivity settings used.
- Disposition: a reviewer’s decision for each meaningful difference.
Use a clear outcome for each meaningful change: accepted intentional update, defect to fix, or inconclusive/noisy difference—capture again. A flagged pixel difference is a prompt for review, not a verdict.

5. Choose a workflow that fits your team
Playwright Test: keep comparisons close to tests
Playwright’s screenshot assertions suit teams that want reference images and comparisons in an existing test workflow. Review the reference created on the first run, manage it as the approved baseline, and inspect subsequent differences as part of test review. This keeps the comparison tied to the test and its captured state. Configuration and comparison options are documented at playwright.dev/docs/test-snapshots.

Chromatic describes a hosted workflow that captures visual snapshots, compares them with a previous baseline, and provides an interface for inspecting differences. Its documentation covers browser and responsive viewport options, CI integration, and review views. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent performance findings. How to decide
- Choose around baseline storage and approval: where references live and how a reviewed change becomes the new reference.
- Check reproducibility: whether your browser, operating system, viewport, fonts, assets, and DPR can stay consistent with the baseline.
- Consider review needs: whether local test output is enough or the team benefits from a centralized hosted review interface.
- Plan coverage: how many browsers, viewports, pages, components, and interaction states need comparison.
- Set noise controls deliberately: use thresholds or sensitivity settings to reduce harmless variation without concealing meaningful changes.
6. Capture a screenshot for a report outside a visual-test workflow
If you are assembling a one-off report, use the same browser setup and capture conditions as the reference as closely as possible. For repeatable reporting, automate the capture and record its route or state, version, browser, viewport, and DPR alongside the output. Do not compare screenshots made under substantially different conditions without calling out the mismatch.
Or skip the browser setup
