Background colors usually disappear because browsers omit page backgrounds by default to save ink or improve print readability. In Chrome, enable Background graphics in the print dialog; in Firefox, enable Print backgrounds under More settings. Check the print preview before saving as a PDF. If the PDF looks correct but the paper copy does not, check printer color settings and driver handling instead.
Turn on background printing in Chrome
- Open the webpage you want to print and choose Print (or press Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on Mac).
- In the print preview, expand the available settings and enable Background graphics.
- Choose Save to PDF as the destination if you want a PDF, then inspect the preview and save.
Chrome’s help explains how to open print settings and change options in the print window: Chrome: print from Chrome. On managed browsers, an administrator can set or restrict background-graphics printing; if the option is unavailable, ask your organization’s IT administrator. The setting is separate from the printer’s color or black-and-white mode. See Chrome Enterprise printing policy.

Turn on background printing in Firefox
- Open the webpage’s Print dialog.
- Expand More settings and enable Print backgrounds.
- Choose Save to PDF as the destination to create a PDF, then check the preview before saving.
Firefox’s Simplified print format disables the background-printing option. Select Original if you need the page’s backgrounds. See Mozilla’s Firefox printing guide.
Find where the color disappears
Compare the webpage’s print preview, the saved PDF, and the paper output. Each step helps isolate the cause.

Why browsers omit backgrounds
Print output may prioritize readability or lower ink use over matching the screen. MDN notes that most browsers remove background colors and images by default when printing. The CSS property print-color-adjust defaults to economy, which allows the browser to adjust the page for output. See MDN: print-color-adjust and MDN: printing.
If you maintain the website: request faithful print colors
For elements whose color or background image is essential to the printed content, a site author can request that the browser preserve the intended appearance:

Apply it selectively, and keep text readable if a reader chooses not to print backgrounds. This property is a request, not a way to force the reader’s settings: user print preferences take precedence, and browsers retain discretion over the output.
